❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I just finished Love Bites by Tori Carrington. I'm not sure what to think about this book. I've really enjoyed all the previous books in the series, but this one left me a bit confused. It's a good, solid plot but the authors introduced a paranormal element in this book that they've always hinted at in the previous books, but had the characters dismiss as silly. And it didn't feel like there was any resolution to it in this book. I'm not explaining it very well, so I'll just say it was good addition to the series and I'm looking forward to the next one. :)

I want to read this one, but don't want to spring for the hardcover price!

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Melodie, I pre- ordered on amazon and got it for really cheap, plus I have the others in hardcover and hate having a 'mixed set'. :). I'll be interested in hearing what you think of it when you do read it, since you read a lot of paranormal too. That element of the plot felt a bit amateurish to me.

Caroline | 661 comments Not sure that it's actually a cozy but I just finished Bury Your Dead (Armand Gamache, #6) by Louise Penny and WOW! Louise Penny has done it again! It's an EXCELLENT book and totally fascinating. There are several plot lines and she works each one well with everything coming together in the end. I am constantly amazed by her imagination and creativity and I'd recommend the Three Pines series to everyone.

Zoe (bookwormfromathens) | 712 comments I've just finished Truly, Madly (Lucy Valentine, #1) by Heather Webber . It was more romance than mystery IMO, but I liked its humorous streak, it reminded me a bit of Janet Evanovitch. The twist at the end of the story was unexpected albeit a little abrupt-as if the author wanted to resolve the case and be done with it.I'll certainly read Lucy's next adventure-in fact I'm starting Deeply, Desperately (Lucy Valentine, #2) by Heather Webber today.

message 1957: by Daphne (new)

Daphne (daphne2163) I just finished The Quick and the Thread and really ejoyed it. Loved the characters and the setting. I hope the love triangle doesn't get annoying. I usually don't figure out who did it, but I knew about 3/4 of the way through the book. I just placed my pre-order for Stitch Me Deadly for February 1st.

The mystery was a little too unchallenging for my liking, but the book was entertaining and fun and I enjoyed it a lot more than I expected to.

Ditto! but I would caution people this is one series that does need to be read in order.

This is the fourth book in the Do-It Yourself Mystery Series. I’ve enjoyed right from the first. Avery and Derek our two intrepid (and unpaid) detectives keep finding themselves mixed up in the strangest adventures. While their real job is renovating old homes and flipping them, each new business venture just drops them in the middle of a murder.

Avery and Derek have bought a 225 year old Colonial home on Rewanberry island, just off the coast of Maine. Avery is seeing the house for the first time in bright daylight and it shocked at just how bad the house looks. Broken windows, a gaping hole in the roof and some ever more damage inside. She begins to wonder if they’ve bitten off more than they can afford to chew. She is thinking about all the extra expenses they are going to incur in the renovation.

The owner of their home’s twin is a reclusive and very well known author named Gert Heyerdahl. Avery decides to walk over to Gert’s place and see what a renovated version of her house looks like and maybe get some ideas (besides wanting to just snoop around). She runs into the caretaker who grudgingly allows her to look through the side windows next to the front door.

True to form, on their next visit out to work on the house they find the body of a young woman floating in the ocean. They bring the body on board their boat and head back to their dock to call their friend Wayne who is the Chief of Police to meet them. The body turns out to have the name and address of the Realtor who sold the house to them in her pocket and from there the bodies seem to pile up as the mystery behind the young woman’s death lead them into a new dangers.

IRS info – I was given this book as a gift from a friend and I decided to review it for the pleasure of the reader.

Caitlin C (caitkom) | 199 comments Just finished Take the Monkeys and Run (Barbara Marr Murder Mystery, #1) by Karen Cantwell . It was pretty good. There were parts that were pretty funny, overall an enjoyable read.

I'm about 60% through this and am liking it also. Good thing: I already bought the rest of the series!

Priscilla | 127 comments I finished Fit to Die (Supper Club Mystery, Book 2) by JB Stanley/Ellery Adams last night, stayed up until 2.00am reading! Really enjoyed this one. Such a fun light read and very sweet. Lots of talk of food and diet and trying to avoid tempting treats! Some really funny moments...

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished Delicious and Suspicious by Riley Adams. It wasn't what I was expecting, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. The plot was good, the sense of place was excellent - I could really picture Aunt Pat's - and the characters likeable. The ending was a small departure from your normal cozies, but was handled really well.

I love this series. The plot point with the return of an old flame, "the one that got away", is one that will get me every time!

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments Heidi I wrote: "Just finished The Long Quiche Good-bye. It was a good first cozy. Not sure I enjoyed all the cheese talk though."

I kinda skimmed over some of the cheese talk. I don't eat cheese, so don't have much interest in it. My husband, on the other hand, is half rat and will eat just about any kind of cheese except bleu!

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I just finished up Tagged for Murder by Elaine Flinn. I really like this series - it's an older one and sadly, no longer running, but the author does a wonderful job with sense of place - you can really picture Carmel - and the characters are all really well written, each with their own distinct personality. The plot for this particular book is a bit convoluted, and maybe a tiny bit complicated, but overall, it was a very enjoyable read.

Kaye (momgee) | 862 comments Just finished Dead and Buried by Jean Hager and I really liked this one. Hager is a new to me author and I would definitely read more in the series. Nice twist at the end. This is my MO for the 50 state challenge. I hope I live long enough to finish this challenge. Lol!

Zoe (bookwormfromathens) | 712 comments I finished Deeply, Desperately (Lucy Valentine, #2) by Heather Webber and I liked it much better than the first Lucy Valentine novel, Truly, Madly (Lucy Valentine, #1) by Heather Webber . Lucy's character is developing and she discovers that she has a brother, whom she totally accepts, as she has always wished for a sibling. Looking forward to her next adventure!

I love the cover art.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished Haunting Jordan by P.J. Alderman. An excellent book! I'm going to give it 4 stars only because the flashbacks were hard to read - I dreaded reading about the events that led up to the ghost's death. But in spite of that I seriously enjoyed this book and I've just pre-ordered the follow up, GHOST SHIP, which GoodReads doesn't seem to want to know about yet. :)

I don't care for that series. The only thing that saves it is it's setting- New Orleans. The only series of hers I like is the Cackleberry Club.

Kaye (momgee) | 862 comments Caroline wrote: "Kaye - Jean Hager had several series and I enjoyed them all!"

Hi Caroline - I definitely plan to read all in the Iris House series. I just finished Antiques to Die For as NH for the 50 state challenge. It's got a pink cover so I think that qualifies it for the Feb challenge too.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I just finished on Audio The Perfect Poison by Amanda Quick. I found this at my local library to listen to on my icky, yucky, very bad commute I make two days a week. It's marketed as a romance, apparently, but with the exception of two scenes (which were lovely to listen to while driving, let me tell you) the rest of the 9 CD's were centered on a mystery involving several murders. And since the sex scenes were Victorian in nature, I'm considering this a cozy. :) It was a pretty good book to listen too and it had a Conservatory, 2 Ballrooms and a Billard room in it, so perfect for the clue challenge! (although, which room to use???)

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 308 comments If you like The Perfect Poison, you'd probably enjoy The Third Circle by the same author. I really enjoyed that audio book, too. Most of Jayne Ann Krentz/Amanda Quick/ Jayne Castle books have some sort of mystery to be solved by the protagonists. Many involve some paranormal elements. None of them are particularly graphic in nature.

Caroline | 661 comments Just finished Shot Through Velvet by Ellen Byerrum and Curiosity Thrilled the Cat (Magical Cats Mystery, #1) by Sofie Kelly . Shot Through Velvet is the latest in Ellen Byerrum's Lacy Smithsonian series and it was really good. Entertaining as well as informative about the situation with factories in this country. I especially enjoy these books because of the local references she includes (I'm in DC area - books are set in DC area). Curiosity is the first in a new series (Magical Cats) and, if you like Leann Sweeney's cat series, I'm sure you'll enjoy this. I'm really looking forward to the next one in this series and more background/explanation about the cats and how they became magical. Very entertaining, imho.

message 2000: by Zoe (new)

Zoe (bookwormfromathens) | 712 comments I finished Sketch Me If You Can (A Portrait of Crime Mystery, #1) by Sharon Pape a few minutes ago and I' m not sure what to think of it.In my opinion, the story was so-so, we don't get much information about Zeke ( the ghost in the house Rory inherited from her dead uncle )- but maybe this will be better explained in the second book- and the end was a little rushed. Moreover, the main character, Rory, seemed to always be arguing with Zeke, which could be annoying at times. She doesn't even acknowledge the fact that he saved her life. Maybe I will give the second book in the series a try, just to see how Zeke died.
