Lori | 10 comments I just finished Catnap by Carole Nelson Douglas at the urgings of my mother. I liked it alright, I just would have liked to have seen more of Louie. It's supposed to be his book, right?

Caroline | 661 comments Just finished Stay Tuned for Murder A Talk Radio Mystery by Mary Kennedy and really enjoyed it. I like the psychological aspect that Mary Kennedy throws in there. Very nice read.

Priscilla | 127 comments Just finished reading Murder of a Botoxed Blonde (A Scumble River Mystery, #9) by Denise Swanson Murder of a Botoxed Blonde. Did not enjoy it due to too many characters and bad writing! I gave up trying to remember who was who. I dont usually finish a book that I am not enjoying but thought id stick with it, the end was a good surprise, but the writing stlye is very similar to the Joanne fluke series and I dont like those either lol...

I read the first 2 in this series and really wanted to like them, but something about them just turns me off. Oh well........

They don't get any better after this one. Another series I no longer read.

I agree with you Melodie I can imagine them not getting any better...I wont be reading anymore either!

I've just finished Dead Man's Island Dead Man's Island (Henrie O, #1) by Carolyn Hart for author of the month and I've really liked it. I'm going to try it with another of her series, because it will go to my states challenge, but I'm not sure about it.

message 1858: by Mary (new)

Mary Kennedy | 27 comments Caroline, so glad you enjoyed STAY TUNED FOR MURDER. I wanted to add a "woo-woo" element, but didn't want to really say whether or not "Madame Chantel" was real, or a phony. Thanks so much for posting the book cover, too! If I weren't so hopelessly low tech, I'd figure out a way to post the cover, maybe that should be one of my goals for 2011.

message 1859: by Zoe (new)

Zoe (bookwormfromathens) | 712 comments I just finished Curiosity Killed the Cat Sitter (Dixie Hemingway Series #1) by Blaize Clement and it was a fabulous read. I'm not sure it falls entirely under the "cozy mystery" category, since it contains some explicit language and gory scenes, but personally I'm 100% fine with that. The story was interesting and fun to follow, although the mystery wasn't original but I was surprised at the revelation of the culprit in the end. The character of Dixie is real; she's a woman with many fears, insecurities but also strengths, trying to move on with her life after losing her husband and little girl. I especially liked the characters of Michael, Paco and Phillip and the bond that is formed between him and Dixie. Blaize Clement definitely knows about good writing and it shows throughout the book. I feel lucky to have discovered this series and I'm ready to plunge into Duplicity Dogged the Dachshund The Second Dixie Hemingway Mystery by Blaize Clement

I like this series, too. I like the mother-daughter aspect. Ever since my mom died, I like books that feature mothers and daughters especially with the normal daughter and eccentric mother. I think that's why I also like Deborah Sharp's Mace Bauer series.

Heidi | 2446 comments Zoe I agree with you, the Blaize Clement books are not your typical cozy (especially the second book), but they are great just the same :)

Diane ~Firefly~ | 325 comments Heidi I wrote: "Zoe I agree with you, the Blaize Clement books are not your typical cozy (especially the second book), but they are greta just the same :)"

Just goes to show how everyone has different tastes. I read the first book a while ago, and thought the story was just ok, but couldn't get over the fact a former deputy was hiding evidence from the police. It turned me off the series entirely. I did like her group of friends though.

message 1863: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2446 comments I can totally see your point on that Diane. I had that same reaction to one of the Goldy books by Diane Mott Davidson when she broke her friend out jail even though she is married to a cop - it went over the line IMO.

message 1864: by Sandra J (new)

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 308 comments I finished Candy Cane Murder last night. The first novella by Joanne Fluke was cute, but I found the recipes at the end of each chapter a distraction, They broke the flow of the story. I like recipes in a cozy, but they aren't the reason I buy the book. The second story by Laura Levine was a DNF for me. I really enjoyed the last novella by Leslie Meier.

I've come to the conclusion with these holiday themed collections by Fluke, Levine & Meier, that neither Fluke nor Levine can write a short story to save their lives.

message 1869: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) | 630 comments Some series in my estimation are good, Diane Mott-Davidson was good in the beginning, but somewhere along the line, she diverted and it just wasn't enjoyable reading her anymore. There are always other authors, I guess. Didn't know she broke her friend out of prison in one of her books, was it her best friend. Sometimes she goes over the line in her books, that is why it is called fiction.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished The Diva Cooks a Goose by Krista Davis. Another good, solid read in this series. I wish I'd have received it in time to read it before Christmas, but I still enjoyed it. :)

message 1871: by Robin (new)

Robin (goodreadscomtriviagoddessl) | 630 comments sounds like a good one, Jennifer.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I'm on a reading tear at the moment and just finished Ghouls, Ghouls, Ghouls by Victoria Laurie. It was a fast, entertaining read. I know it's not a favorite with everyone but I love this series and it has just enough of the ghosties and ghoulies to be scary-entertaining not scary-sleep-with-the-lights-on. I do wish someone would smack the ever-lovin' life out of Gilley though - he's just too silly to even be entertaining. Still, can't wait for the next one.

I hadn't read anything by any of these authors before. I liked 2 out of the 3 well enough which is pretty good for an anthology. I'm not very interested in trying anything else by Levine. Her humor just left me cold. I might try Fluke again but only from the library. I hate love triangles. Meier is one I'll try again, I think. I rather liked her characters.

message 1875: by Terry (last edited Jan 10, 2011 03:36PM) (new)

Terry (chowan75gmailcom) | 2 comments I just read A Clause for Murder by Jill Shure. I had read Jill's prior books, Night Jazz and Night Glitter, and felt certain her newest release, A Clause for Murder, would be just as good. Excuse my southern slang, but A Clause for Murder was a hoot! Betsy Ross is an insurance salesman and the book centers around her everyday life, affairs, and best friends. Courtney Farrow is an uppity-up, materialistic brat with a dark past and sneaky acts as means of maintaining her upscale lifestyle and of which some lead up to several murders. This book and its characters are so real to life and one can't help but wonder if what happened to Betsy Ross could very well happen to ourselves in real life. The story is humorous, thrilling and romantic all wrapped up in one. Don't try to guess what happens next throughout the book. There are twists you will never expect. What makes this murder mystery even more unique is it's fairytale ending. This book was so enjoyable. The book is priced reasonable at Amazon.com and is also available on Kindle. I listened to
Curiosity Killed the Cat Sitter on audio book a few months ago and I really enjoyed it. You convinced me it is time to start book 2. Netlibrary has it available.

Finished Death on Demand by Carolyn Hart before bed last night. Pretty good book. I would probably pick up next in the series, were I to happen across it.

Zoe (bookwormfromathens) | 712 comments Kimmie, I'm so glad that I persuaded you to read or listen to Duplicity Dogged the Dachshund The Second Dixie Hemingway Mystery by Blaize Clement . Personally, I prefer to read books rather than listen to them, because it's an excellent way to practice and improve my English reading skills! I live in Athens, Greece, and English isn't my mother tongue but I absolutely adore the English language and try to include some reading in my daily schedule. And of course, since I' m a sucker for mysteries, cozies are the perfect option!

Zoe, your written English is impeccable! :)

I just finished Evan Only Knows by Rhys Bowen. I kept up with this series for years, but completely stalled out on this book. But with the title/character challenges and winter challenges, I had great motivation to pick it back up and read it. It's a very good story - a bit deeper and more emotional than previous ones, if I remember correctly. It wasn't my favorite though now that I'm through it I'll be looking at the ones she's published since. :)

Nora-adrienne (nora_adrienne) Fundraising the Dead
By: Sheila Connolly
Copyright October, 2010

Sheila Connolly has written the epitome of first series stories. This is the story of Nell Pratt, the Director of Development at the Pennsylvania Antiquarian Society. is to bring money in to support the Society and keeps its doors open and safeguard the documents and historical items on display and in storage. She is extremely good at this but doesn’t actually give herself enough credit what she has accomplished so far.
Nell is preparing for a Gala Fundraising dinner to be held in the Society’s building. The Gala is in celebration of the 125th Anniversary of the Society’s guardianship of the Historic Treasures of Philadelphia. She is going over her plans in her head over and over and over…. This has to be successful so that the Board of Directors will see just how much she cares about the Society and its purpose.
Nell’s day is interrupted by the arrival of Martha Terwilliger aka Marty. Marty is a 3rd generation board member, and the granddaughter of one of the founders. She has been sticking her nose into things for years and Nell just doesn’t have time for her today. Marty insists that Nell take a minute to hear her problem. Some of the documents that her family donated are missing. They are part of a group written by George Washington to Marty’s ancestor. She explains that Nell, even though this is not in her job title is the only one that can help her solve the problem.
From this point on Nell’s life becomes a roller coaster of intrigue, murder, and suspense. This book will draw you into the center of Philadelphia’s old family society. It will even make you laugh at what Nell and her partners in crime get into and how they extricate themselves. I recommend it to anyone.

Zoe, I prefer to read them too but audio books allow me to read while doing all those things you "have" to do like laundry, cleaning, and riding in car. I just wish more cozies were available in audio book. I agree with Jennifer your English is great.

I also liked the first one. Don't bother reading this one, though. It isn't worth it. I swear Ellie is losing brain cells with each book and the romance between her and Sam has absolutely no chemistry left.

message 1898: by Misty (new)

Misty I just finished Back to School Murder, and I liked it. I've read several in the series now, and I've found them really enjoyable. I have one that I found at the UBS, but it's much further along in the series. I'd like to read the next few in the series.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished A Royal Pain by Rhys Bowen. I thought the first book was all right but I see improvement in the series' storyline in this book - some interesting character development taking place with Darcy's character. Good story line, although I saw most of the plot way ahead of time. Still, I really enjoyed this book and I'm looking forward to the next one.

Susan (sumagoo) | 131 comments I will admit that Dec and the begining of Jan. were awful months for me to read. Just could not get into reading. Start a book and just put it down. But this week I started and finished two in three days.

I just finished Gingerbread Cookie Murder by Joanne Fluke, Laura Levine, and Leslie Meier. I liked the first two but did not care for the one by Leslie Meier. I just don't like the main charcter. to me to self centered.

The next book I finished was: Church choir Mysteries:The Highly Suspicious Halo by Eileen M. Berger. It was a good book nice story line.
