Heidi | 2446 comments Just finished Them Bones (Sarah Booth Delaney, #1) by Carolyn Haines and still not sure how I feel about it. I was kind of bothered about the whole dognapping thing and the ghost. Anyone else read the rest of the series? Is it worth reading more?

I read the first 2 of these and wasn't crazy about either book. I think I have another 1 around here but have been meaning to put it on PBS.

message 1553: by Katherine (new)

Katherine I just finished Death at Epsom Downs (A Victorian Mystery, #7) by Robin Paige .While I'm enjoying this series I don't like the inclusion of real life characters such as Lillie Langtry. I also find it very difficult to accept that an American expat who was brought up by a policeman and his wife would find herself in the exalted company of English society during Victorian times. Heck, she'd have had a tough time right through the '80's there or at home for that matter--I mean the 1980's! I really prefer Ann Perry's books and Thompson's Gaslight mysteries

I really love this series but I am from the South originally and I really relate to this series. Generally, I would say if I did not like the first book I would move on.

message 1555: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I finished Sketch Me If You Can (A Portrait of Crime Mystery, #1) by Sharon Pape this afternoon. I'm not sure if I'll read the next or not. I didn't know until I started reading that there was a ghost involved. Not usually a favorite of mine. I did like the author's writing though...so who knows..I may give the next one a try.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I finished Untitled by Julie Kaewert a few days ago. The stories in this series are fascinating, but they are involved. And a bit too much introspection by the protag, in my opinion. I'm ready for something a bit lighter and have started Elizabeth Peters Ghost in Green Velvet.

message 1557: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments I just finished The Corpse Wore Tartan by Kaitlyn Dunnett and I loved it! Of course, I'm of Scottish descent so I love these stories which take place in Moosetookalook ME and feature Liss MacCrimmon and her Scottish store. This is a terrific entry in the series and I can't wait for the next one!

message 1558: by Katherine (new)

Katherine There is a huge lake in Maine called, don't check my spelling here please, Mooselookmeguntic. My mom always called it Mooselookmeover. I bet the author did a play on the name of the same lake!!!

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished Ghost in Green Velvet by Elizabeth Peters last night. No Ghost, and no green velvet but a great, well-written, fun story nonetheless. I really like Elizabeth Peter's writing, though I will admit the Amelia Peabody's are a bit tough for me to really, thoroughly, enjoy.

It's really a nice break to occasionally read one of the older mysteries. They are compelling without being overly complicated - sort of like reading a mature Nancy Drew. Does that make sense?

Nell | 1223 comments I finished Death and the Lit Chick: A St. Just Mysteryby GM Malliet. This is the second in the series. It's a good mystery series and I love the author's wit. There are points that were LOL.

And I just finished Dead Air - the first in a series about a psychologist with a radio talk show. I enjoyed this one too and loved the supporting cast, especially the protagonist's mother. One drawback was when the author (who is a psychologist) indulged her character in self-analysis. My eyes rolled when she talked about her amygdala. Overall, I really liked the mystery.
I will definitely read the next one in this series.

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments Finished An Uplifting Murder (Josie, Marcus Mystery Shopper #6) by Elaine Viets . I think I like it the best of all the books in this series, so far.

message 1562: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2446 comments I have never seen that series Melodie - looks cute. Nell I plan to read Dead Air soon - I just got it from the library. I just finished Homicide In Hardcover (Bibliphile Mystery, #1) by Kate Carlisle and really liked it.

Glad you liked the Kate Carlisle book, Heidi! I like the characters! The Josie Marcus series by Elaine Viets is pretty good, you might like them.

Shannon (dolphinlover) | 290 comments I finished Scoop to Kill (A Mystery a La Mode, #2) by Wendy Lyn Watson and it was great I am looking forward to the next book. This is one of my favorite series for sure.

Maryalice | 10 comments I've finished all of Laura Childs tea shop books. I'm waiting on the new one "The teaberry Strangler" to come in. I really love these books! My one tiny complaint is Haley, the baker. She's a young student who can bake everything. She seems to schreek and scream and constantly yells, "it's about time you got here!" It's no big deal, it just sets my teeth on edge.

I don't mind Haley. Theodosia, Drayton and especially Delaine, get on my last nerve sometimes.

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments Maryalice wrote: "Hi Melodie. Do you enjoy reading this series?"

On the whole I like the series. I've read them all, but Delaine is such a phony that I really don't like her. Theo can be a pain from time to time and I just wish Drayton would come out of the closet! :-)

message 1570: by Emma (new)

Emma | 109 comments I just finished Murder in Volume Murder in Volume (Megan Clark, #1) by Doris R. Meredith by D.R. Meredith and really enjoyed it. I think I will read the next in the series after I get all these library books out of the way.
Am now on to Death by Darjeeling Death by Darjeeling (A Tea Shop Mystery, #1) by Laura Childs by Laura Childs. Really like this one so far, although only about 3 chapters in!

I would say that if the series weren't set in Charleston or didn't have a wonderful sense of place I wouldn't read this series. But, I feel like I'm travelling to Charleston for a visit everytime I read it. But, I pretty much don't like any of the charcters except Haley. The rest of them are like fussy old women who complain at you about your hair being too long and your shirt not being tucked in.

I think you hit the nail on the head, Shay. The great sense of Charleston in the books, I think, is probably what keeps me reading the books.

Patricia Rockwell (par2323) | 24 comments Just dropped by and, to my great surprise, discovered that the last few commenters have just finished the same cozy that I just finished--"Death by Darjeeling." I don't feel any annoyance with any of the characters, actually found all of them--and their names--delightful. The author's ability to conjure up a sense of place is remarkable and I could feel myself in those winding streets of Charleston. I absolutely intend to read more in this series.

I just began the first one and I am in love! Although I do find Haley a bit annoying already, when she discovered the body and they couldn't get her to stop crying, I am still very excited to have discovered yet another series that I can't wait to get into. Glad you love them as well, encourages me to keep going!

Patricia,
I was surprised as well to see so mnay people reading along with me! I am hoping I don't find the characters annoying, but seeing as I am only on the first book, I guess that is a possibility. I hope you continue to enjoy them!

I wanted to like Delaine, since that's my middle name, but she just really gets under my skin. Luckily she's not a huge part of any of the books, I've read the whole series so far, so I tolerate her!

Maryalice | 10 comments Good morning everyone. Yesterday I was talking about Laura Childs and a great discussion started. I also love the way she describes Charleston. I love descriptive authors. Has anyone read her other series? The Scrapbooking Mysteries? When she describes New Orleans, you feel as if you're walking along side her. She even covered the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. And none of these characters bother me:)

Laura Childs is one of my favorite mystery authors. Her descriptions, in both the Tea Shop mysteries and the Scrapbooking mysteries, make me want to hop on a plane and stay for awhile in each city, Charleston and New Orleans. I've not yet read her most recent series, and the name escapes me at the moment. I see there is a new Scrapbooking mystery just out- Fiber and Brimstone.

I haven't read the Scrapbooking mysteries as that is a subject that just does not interest me at all. I do really like her Cackleberry Club books. The 3rd in that series comes out 12/7. I like them better than the Tea Shop series as I can more readily identify with the characters in that series. The series is more character driven than "place" driven.

Charlaine Harris' Sookie books have dealt with the devastation in New Orleans and some of the reconstruction after Katrina, too. I find that commendable, rather than gloss over major disasters as some books seem to.

message 1584: by Maryalice (new)

Maryalice | 10 comments I've read her Cackleberry Club series also. It's easy to identify with the characters . The characters are down to earth and NOT size 6 and "twenty-something":)
The problems of the friends are problems I've seen also. It's fun reading!!

I've just finished Scratch the Surface (Cat Lover's Mysteries) by Susan Conant and I've really liked it. Perhaps it begins a bit slow, but it's a good reading. And I love the chapters about the cat's feelings (I'm in love with another cat breed: Chartreuse). It's a pity the series didn't continue.

alicia grant (shesha556) I just finished A Toast to Murder (A Wine Lover's Mystery, #6) by Michele Scott and am now all caught up. I do really like this series.I also just finished Sprinkle with Murder (Cupcake Bakery Mystery, #1) by Jenn McKinlay and really loved this one. So many cozies so little time. I can't wait to try the cupcake recipes.

message 1588: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2446 comments Anne I am from the North, so perhaps I would have liked it more if I lived in the South? My library has some of the other books on audio, so I may try that route with the series and see how that goes.

Heidi | 2446 comments Just finished Death at Wentwater Court (Daisy Dalrymple, #1) by Carola Dunn . I thought it was ok, but I liked Her Royal Spyness (Her Royal Spyness Mysteries #1) by Rhys Bowen and Snobbery with Violence An Edwardian Murder Mystery by Marion Chesney , which are based around the same time period a little better.

I love this series. It is one of the few series I buy and read as soon as the books come out. The dognapping was a little strange but it really helps with the progression of the series. It is so true...to each their own (and thank god for that).

Daphne (daphne2163) Well I stuck with Bookmarked For Death (A Booktown Mystery, #2) by Lorna Barrett and enjoyed the mystery very much, even though I didn't like any of the main characters. One exception was Miss Marple, the cat, who was the most enjoyable character in the entire book! Because the plot was so strong for me, I may read another book in the series.

Sambuca is the sweetest cat, and so lovable. He is quite huge, though. The nickname for the breed is "Potato on a stick" because they are stocky but have long legs.
