Miki | 148 comments I just finished The Quick and the Thread by Amanda Lee. I think the series has some possibilities. I like the setting and the main character. I really like "Jill" and Angus. I just hope there is not the eternal love triangle between Marcy, Todd, and Ted. That only works so long for me.

Erin L (wellreadmoose) | 505 comments I finished State of the Onion (White House Chef Mystery, Book 1) by Julie Hyzy yesterday. It was enjoyable, but I got tired of her "but it's not my fault!!!!!!!!!" attitude. She's lying to herself and to her boyfriend. But other than that, I liked it.

I just finished Murder on the Iditarod Trail (Alaska Mysteries) (Alex Jensen / Jessie Arnold, #1) by Sue Henry and I've liked it a lot althoufh I've had some problems with the vocabulary (too specific and English is not my mother language).

message 1404: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments Dru - I just finished Crossing the Lion A Reigning Cats & Dogs Mystery by Cynthia Baxter and really enjoyed it as well. We do have good taste, don't we? LOL

Miki - Turns out Amanda Lee of the embroidery series is Gayle Trent of the cake decorating series. : ) I finished Murder Takes the Cake and am now reading Dead Pan and enjoying that too. I liked the Quick and the Thread and am looking forward to more books in both series!

kathryn, I am a serious escapist reader and really don't generally enjoy heavy reading but Maisie Dobbs is a wonderful series. They are well written and the type of book that you can not put down. You also learn quite a bit about life in England during the two world wars.

message 1406: by Priya (new)

Priya | 5 comments Endless Night by Agatha Christie. Was a really different kind of Christie novel.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished The Quick and the Thread. I enjoyed this book much more than I expected to, as I'm not a big fan of embroidery. The story was interesting and the author did a great job with character and setting development. I'll definitely be looking forward to the next book.

message 1408: by Miki (new)

Miki | 148 comments I just finished Murder Carries a Torch by Anne George. I enjoy the characters in this series. They are always good for a laugh.

Finished Last Writes before bed last night. Wow. This was quite a heavy subject for a cozy, and one that sticks with you long after you've closed the covers. I can understand why someone who read this book before others in the series might be wary of going back to read from the beginning.

message 1410: by alicia (new)

alicia grant (shesha556) I finished Murder by the Glass (A Wine Lover's Mystery, #2) by Michele Scott and did enjoy the characters. I do think i'm addicted to the series. I will read the rest of them i have and put the newest on hold. Makes me want to run out and start buying up bottles of wine.

I just started this one yesterday.

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 821 comments I just finished Lemon Tart (Culinary Mystery, #1) by Josi S. Kilpack by Josi S. Kilpack. I think I enjoyed the cover of the book more than the story ;( Unfortunately, I won't be reading anymore because I couldn't stand the main character.

I have this on my PBS wishlist, maybe I'll take it off!

I agree with you about her attitude. I just finished it last night, and that bothered me about the book as well.

message 1417: by Miki (new)

Miki | 148 comments I just finished The Mamo Murders by Juanita Sheridan. It is a non-traditional cozy, and a very good read if you are interested in Hawaiian culture.

message 1418: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments Dru - Just about to finish Last Writes by Sheila Lowe. And I bought a bunch of new books today so still have plenty to read!

Miki - I love the Southern Sisters series by Anne George also.

message 1419: by Kait (new)

Kait Carson | 182 comments Just finished Lorna Barrett's Bookplate Special. Really enjoyed it, especially like the way the characters are developing throughout the series.

message 1420: by Nell (new)

Nell | 1223 comments Heidi I wrote: "Just finished The Diva Runs Out of Thyme (A Domestic Diva Mystery, #1) by Krista Davis. I am not not sure about this one. Natasha kind of ruined it for me. And what was with Sophie's own mother always defending Nat? Any..."

I like the contrast between Sophie and Natasha. What annoyed you, amused me - Sophie is so practical and down to earth; she gives advice and hints folks can really use. Natasha needs a staff to carry out her tips and crazy ideas. I think it's in the second book where one of Natasha's tips really backfires on her! There's more character development in book two, but the mystery in book one is better. (Too much improbable coincidence to suit me.) I just picked up ...Paints the Town because I like the characters and the series.

message 1421: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2446 comments Thanks Nell. I plan to read book two and am glad to hear Natasha falls on her face somewhat :)

message 1422: by Nancy (new)

Nancy (nancyjcohen) | 53 comments I just finished DEATH THREADS by Elizabeth Lynn Casey. It's the first mystery about a sewing group that I've read. Cute story.

message 1423: by Sandra J (new)

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 308 comments I'm about halfway through Upfield's Bachelors of Broken Hill and will start Cockatiels at Seven by Donna Andrews as soon as I'm done with Bony's book.

message 1424: by Peeper (new)

Peeper | 2 comments I gave my last cozy to my mother and can't remember the title! It was about a southern woman who is advised by a smart-mouth female ghost. The woman partners in a detective agency with another gal named Twinkie and Twinkie has a lump in her breast. I plowed through it, but quit when the killer's i.d. was revealed. I didn't like hearing all about the lump and at the end it became the vehicle for some very elementary psychological advice. The ghost is a new way to handle a character's soliloquies, but I found it sort of irritating.

message 1425: by Miki (new)

Miki | 148 comments I just finished Lye in Wait by Carmen McRae. I really liked the story and the characters. I look forward to reading more in this series.

message 1426: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments Peeper - The book you read was one by Carolyn Haines and it's in the Sarah booth Delaney series. I read a lot of those but got irritated by the relationships she had or didn't have. (No spoilers here). Some of them are better than others, imho.

message 1427: by Shay (new)

Shay | 408 comments I just "finished" A Nose for Justice A Novel by Rita Mae Brown . I couldn't get past page 14. It was irritating me as much as Cat of the Century (Mrs. Murphy, #18) by Rita Mae Brown so I decided to stop reading. Unless for some bizarre reason, you loved Cat of the Century, do not buy this book. If you feel you want to read it, don't even buy it used, get it from the library. I can't imagine how disgusted I would feel right now if I'd bought this book.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished Buzz Off. Ok, the bullet points were insanely annoying. I'd actually give this book 3.5 stars if I could though. I liked the story, and the characters and the author did a very good job describing the setting. But the bullet points almost killed this book for me. And the protagonists mother. Every heroine needs a nemesis, but it shouldn't be her mother. This mother was just nasty and her part in the book only made me angry.

I might read the next book in the series, but only if the bullet points are nixed. I can hope her mother is the next victim, though I don't think I'll get that lucky.

message 1429: by Donna (new)

Donna | 10 comments Finished Live Free or Die which was a Goodreads Giveaway and I really enjoyed it. Entertaining characters and setting in small town New Hampshire. Looks like a good beginning for a series.

Live Free or Die by Jessie Crockett

message 1430: by Susie (new)

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 821 comments Just finished Stuck on Murder (A Decoupage Mystery, #1) by Lucy Lawrence by Lucy Lawrence. I liked the characters and the story, but I hope it isn't going to turn into one of those love triangle stories.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished Take the Monkeys and Run by Karen Cantwell. Implausible story, but likeable characters. I was annoyed with the author for not explaining the reasoning behind the "big secret", and I was ready to throw the book away after the scene with the cat, but luckily, I read just a bit further and discovered the author redeemed herself and the story.

I'll read the next one in the series, but I won't be rushing out to purchase it.

message 1432: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments Just finished Loco Motive (Bed-and-Breakfast Mystery, Book 25) by Mary Daheim . Another entertaining entry in Mary Daheim's B&B series. Also put me in mind to take a train trip!

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished Unprintable by Julie Kaewert. This was one of the books I chose for my "Clue" challenge - for the knife/dagger.

message 1434: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments Now I just finished The Chocolate Pirate Plot A Chocoholic Mystery by JoAnna Carl . Love the setting of this series, the characters and the chocolate facts sprinkled throughout the book!

message 1435: by Beth (new)

Beth | 616 comments I just finished Still Life Still Life (Armand Gamache, #1) by Louise Penny and loved it. I read the second book in the series (A Fatal Grace) when it was up for the Best Novel Agatha Award in 2007 (and won it). I'm finally getting back to the series and decided to read the first before I picked it up again with the third. I really enjoy Louise Penny's writing.

message 1436: by Miki (new)

Miki | 148 comments I just finished Crushing Crystal by Evan Marshall. I enjoyed the strong lead character who stood up for herself, but was not obnoxious. I haven't read many cozies by male authors. It was a change.

Finished The Tale of Hill Top Farm Froday night, and then read The Tale of Holly How over the weekend, both by this month's featured author, Susan Wittig Albert. I enjoyed both of these books and look forward to continuing this series. Which means a trip out to Frugal Muse in the near future to check for more of the older books, since HPB never has any of her books.

I've read the whole series, it's pretty consistent throughout. It's an interesting blend of chick-lit and mystery.

message 1441: by Heidi (new)

Heidi | 2446 comments Ok good to know Shay - I got that whole vibe as well (chick lit/cozy) :)

Was it because of Tricia that you disliked it Melodie? She had me biting my tongue a few times, but I did like the story.
