I loved the Southern Sisters books, such fun!

Ann (bookwoman247) | 18 comments I just finished The Alington Inheritence by Patricia Wentworth. I was very enjoyable, indeed. I do have two complaints, though. First, the mystery is all laid out, which means there is no puzzle for the reader to work out. Second, the young woman protagonist was too much of a stereotypical ingneue for my taste. She relied on everyone around her to come to her aid and protect her. I realize that she was only 17, and that times were different, but I found her decidedly lacking in spunk.

I still reallky enjoyed the book, though.

Martha (marthas48) | 161 comments Betty & Caroline,
The Southern Sisters series is good. I plan to read them again ... in my spare time! :-)
I just finished The Gatehouse Mystery by Julie Campbell, the 3rd Trixie Belden book. Enjoyed it, but not as much as the 1st two. I will continue to read them. I can't believe I never read them before ... I read all the Nancy Drew & Hardy Boys books.

message 1205: by Tracy T. (new)

Tracy T. I finished Her Royal Spyness (Her Royal Spyness Mysteries #1) by Rhys Bowen and Doom with a View (Psychic Eye Mystery, #7) by Victoria Laurie in the past few days. I really liked them both.

Finished A Bone to Pick by Charlaine Harris last night er, very early this morning (sometime between 1 and 2 am...I am sooo bad!). Pretty good, but wish I hadn't had such a long gap between reading the first and second book in this series. Now to acquire books 3 and 4...

message 1207: by Kaye (new)

Kaye (momgee) | 862 comments Finished The Mournful Teddy by John J. Lamb last night and enjoyed it. A little implausible here and there but then cozies aren't known for their realism.

message 1208: by Susie (new)

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 821 comments Just finished Murder in the Air A Dan Rhodes Mystery (Sheriff Dan Rhodes Mysteries) by Bill Crider by Bill Crider. This is actually a series that I'm caught up on!

message 1209: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments Just finished The Case of the Murdered Muckraker (Daisy Dalrymple, #10) by Carola Dunn . After hearing some comments around here, I think I'll check out the Bill Crider series. Sounds like something I might like. : )

Just an opinion, but you may want to space reading this series out a little. It gets annoying how the main character goes on an on about how much he loves his wife. I mean, I guess at first it's kind of cuite. Gets kind of creepy, icky, fake feeling. More so, to me, as you go on in the series.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I've just finished Chapter and Hearse and I'm sorry to say I'm just not enjoying this series. The characters all seem stiff to me, and I'm just not cheering for any of them except Ginny.

I really wanted to like this series and kept reading, hoping they'd get better. The premise is great - but the characters, I just want to get them all drunk. :). I'm not sure if I'll keep on with the next book or not.

yeah, that did feel a little forced and repetitive to me. It'll be a while before I get to the next one anyway. Thanks for your input, Shay. Always welcomed!

message 1213: by Sukhi (new)

Sukhi (svgoomer) I don't remember if I posted this already, so I'll do it again since I can't find my post. I just finished Elizabeth Peters' first Amelia Peabody mystery, Crocodile on the Sandbank. I really enjoyed it. I liked the taste of ancient Egypt and Victorian English society running through the narrative. I'm going to pick up the next one in the series after I'm done with my SUMMER challenge.

Heidi | 2446 comments Shay I could not agree with you more about your opinion of the Teddy Bear series. I read the first one, but was so annoyed about how "in love" they were and "wonderful" the author's kept saying his wife was, that I did not continue on with the series.

Shay | 408 comments Heidi I wrote: "Shay I could not agree with you more about your opinion of the Teddy Bear series. I read the first one, but was so annoyed about how "in love" they were and "wonderful" the author's kept saying hi..."

You can tell it was written by a man. I've been married for almost 20 years and "real" romantic behavior is cooking dinner when you're tired and not acting like he's the first man who ever cooked or going grocery shopping for you and not calling you because he forgot what kind of laundry detergent/ dish soap/fabric softener you use because he wrote it down. (Or took a picture on his cell phone like my husband does.)

I agree with your description of "real" romantic behavior, Shay! I've been married for almost 36 years and my DH is the best! He cooks without being asked, he does the laundry and gets the bedroom nice and dark and keeps the dogs occupied when I have a migraine! However, I won't say the interaction of the characters in the Teddy Bear books is unrealistic, because my sister & her husband are like the characters. They will make you sick just being around them!

message 1222: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 188 comments Just finished The Good Thief's Guide to Vegas. I just love this series and now I'll have to wait another year to get another one. It should be good though - Charlie is going to Venice. :)

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I've just finished Dial Emmy For Murder and enjoyed it thoroughly. It was a nice surprise to see the main character work -with- the detective instead of behind his back, as seems to be the case is a lot of cozies.

Have just ordered her last one, Diva Las Vegas. I'm disappointed there won't be more but I'm hoping there won't be too many loose ends.

message 1224: by Miki (new)

Miki | 148 comments I just finished Please Omit Funeral by Hildegarde Dolson. It was written in the 1970s as part of a four book series about a widow and a divorced former homicide inspector who solve crimes in a small conservative town in Connecticut. The characters are interesting and the clues were good, as well as the red herrings. If I can find the others in the series, I will give them a read.

Susan (sumagoo) | 131 comments I finished Death by Diamonds by Annette Blair. I have really enjoyed this series.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished The Cold Light of Mourning: A Mystery. I'm not sure how I would rate it. I really enjoyed the setting, and the plot was a good one (although I figured out whodunit early on). I liked the protagonist too, but I found her to be a bit naive and unbelievable. I guess I would read another in this series, but it would be only when I didn't have much else on the TBR pile.

Whenever I see this at the library, I pull it out. Something about the cover I just love, I guess. Then, for some reason I put it back.

Finished The Quick and the Thread by Amanda Lee this evening. Overall a pretty good read. You can read about my one giant nit here if really interested.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Just finished Spin a Wicked Web and really enjoyed it. This series has been a great find and I have everyone here to thank - I never would have found it otherwise! :)

Glad to see others here get on board with this series! It's terribly underrated, IMHO, and I talk it up every chance I get.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Well, I lilke the series so much I jumped right in with Something Borrowed, Something Bleu and finished that up today! :) Really fantastic read and I'll be checking out her website for her recipes and hopefully more info about making your own cheese.

Now here's hoping the publisher is encouraging this author to produce more books! :D

I just got this one and even though I haven't done any x-stitch in awhile I think I would have picked up on that, too. Used to do lots of x-stitch, can't begin to count the baby & wedding samplers I've done, but it gives me a terrible headache anymore when I do it.

message 1237: by Shay (new)

Shay | 408 comments Melodie, have you ever tried the magnifying thing. I don't do crafts so I don't know what it's called, but about 10 years ago we bought my aunt what looks like a necklace with a huge magnifying glass. The glass is circular and is somehow fitted like a shelf (right below the collarbone) so that when you look down to do the cross stitch it's magnified. The lens is huge so you don't have to crane your neck, you look down normally. The lens was made out of that polycarbonate stuff they use for glasses so it was very light.

I've thought about one of those. If the weather is bad this winter I may pick one up and give it a shot as I found a couple of small kits I'd forgotten I had and I'd like to do them.

she used phrases like "resonated inside her," "swirled the coffee" and one other one a lot. I'm hoping it gets better. Was this her first one?

message 1240: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I finished Murder 101 (Alison Bergeron Mysteries) by Maggie Barbieri tonight. I read it for the August challenge of Academics(late start I know) . I have had it in my TBR pile for a while now but it just didn't catch my eye. I am so glad the challenge made me read it. I immediately ordered the 2nd and 3rd book in the series. I'm going to wait on the 4th in paperback since it's in November. I'm glad I didn't read the reviews prior to reading the book as sometimes I think I am swayed by others opinions. There were some things I'd like to get rid of (the crying and vomiting mainly..ha) but the relationship between Alison and Crawford was great. If I wasn't married I'd be out looking for a Bobby of my own!

Kaye (momgee) | 862 comments Just finished Death by Inferior Design (A Domestic Bliss Mystery, #1) by Leslie Caine and thought it was inane. I bought another one of her books at the same time and not sure I even want to bother.

The series actually gets on your nerves more the further along you read. I don't know if it's because the books themselves are more annoying or if the characters just continue to get on your nerves and it accumulates.

I finished Grace Under Pressure last night - er...very, very early this morning. I only meant to read a chapter or two before bed. Three hours later, I was almost done so had to stay up just a tiny bit longer to finish it. Ugh! A good mystery, but I am sooo dragging today.

While reading, I tried to keep an eye out for any details that might tell us in which state this book is set, since I know others had this question for the USA challenge. Sigh... The only real clues given were:

1. Southern Atlantic region, which narrows it down to a handful of states.
2. Not Florida, as it is mentioned her aunt moved there and had not been home since.
3. The only other town mentioned is Springfield.
4. Not Maryland as a secondary character was mentioned as also being wanted there.

Since Emberstowne itself is made up, I went with the assumption that Springfield is real and reached for the road atlas. No Springfield in North Carolina, but there is one in Maryland, South Carolina and Virginia - but as I said, I dont think it's in Maryland, as another character was "also" wanted there. Which narrows it down to Virginia or S. Carolina.

I saw over at Killer Characters that someone asked where Emberstowne is located, but though Hyzy replied back to the poster, she did not answer the question.

Oh, well - at least we have it narrowed down to two out of fifty. Maybe there will be more of a clue in the next book!

Finally finished The Intrigue at Highbury by Carrie Bebris and moving on to Night of the Living Deed (A Haunted Guesthouse Mystery, #1) by E.J. Copperman !
