This one was my least favorite of the series, so far. I have the newest one in The Pile.

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments Finished Sizzling Sixteen (Stephanie Plum, #16) by Janet Evanovich this morning! Another great visit with Stephanie & crew. I always go into these books not expecting much (God knows they'd never be considered "literature"!), so I'm happy when they make me laugh!

Very cozy summer read with lots of recipes, too! :-)

I don't read that series. Didn't really like book one. I think I could have liked it had the "romance" been presented differently!!!!

Nancy | 4 comments I just finished Through a Glass, Deadly, a first novel by Sarah Atwell. Her heroine is a glassblower and there is a lot of fun information about glassblowing peppered throughout the book. I enjoyed it a great deal and I'm looking forward to getting her second one.

I have this one coming up probably next week. Currently reading Tomb with a View (Pepper Martin, #6) by Casey Daniels . I don't come across a lot of people who are familiar with the Pepper Martin series.

message 963: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments Cool, Melodie! That's another of the books I bought yesterday (was so bummed about my car repairs, I had to go out and buy some new books to read!). I've read all the Casey Daniels Pepper Martin series.

I enjoyed
Through a Glass, Deadly (A Glassblowing Mystery, #1) by Sarah Atwell as well. I should get looking for book 2. Too many books to read, so little time!

message 965: by Misty (new)

Misty I just finished Tippy Toe Murder, and I really enjoyed it.

message 966: by Shay (new)

Shay | 408 comments Finished The Grave Gourmet by Alexander Campion the other day. Most disappointing mystery I've read this year. It says on the cover that it's a culinary mystery, but there's almost no descriptions of food. The author doesn't do an adequate job of describing Paris and the main character is totally unlikable. Maybe it's because it's a male author and a female character.

Thank you by the info. I had seen it but I hadn't bought it because I wasn't sure and it's quite expensive.

Kate | 71 comments Death on the Drunkard's Path (Iris House B&B, #3) by Jean Hager

Not really my cuppa, it seemed pretty formulaic and superficially written. I guess hardly anyone can live up to Patricia Wentworth or Patricia Harwin or Martha Grimes or Josephine Bell or Elizabeth Lemarchand for me. Oh, except M.C.Beaton -- I'm secretly in live with Hamish MacBeth ...

message 969: by Susie (new)

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 821 comments I finished A Witch in Time while we were camping. I saw it at the library, not realizing it was part of a series, and picked it up. It was OK, but I'm not sure if I want to go back and read anymore.

message 970: by Shay (new)

Shay | 408 comments I am going through a bad run with mysteries. Just read The Dog Park Club: A Mystery by Cynthia Robinson. It was an oddly paced mystery, the main characters didn't start investigating the crime until about 2/3 of the way through. One of the main characters was extremely unlikable- mean, drunken, and slutty. The ending was unsatisfying. If you really feel like you need to read it, this is definitely a library only read.

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments Nancy wrote: "Hi, Susie in Kansas...........what was wrong with A Wichita in Time? Could you elaborate?"

Not Susie, but I read the first 2 books in this series and just really didn't like the main character. She came across as terribly immature to me.

message 973: by Susie (new)

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 821 comments Nancy wrote: "Hi, Susie in Kansas...........what was wrong with A Wichita in Time? Could you elaborate?"

I think the problem was that I've never read any of the previous books in the series, so I wasn't familiar with the characters...or their "abilities". I agree with Melodie too...that the main character was immature.

I've just finished Executive Lunch (Sedona O'Hala Mysteries, #1) by Maria E. Schneider . It's OK but I don't get the feeling with it (perhaps because of the humor, I'm a bit "special" with it, I usually flee if somebody says the book is funny). I don't know what I'm going to read now.

message 981: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 188 comments I finished Sprinkle with Murder Friday night and really, really enjoyed it. The friendship between Mel, Angie, and Tate seemed very genuine and endearing. The mystery was also good although I started suspecting the killer about halfway through. I give the book 4 stars and look forward to the next one.

message 982: by Suzanne (last edited Jul 18, 2010 11:36AM) (new)

Suzanne | 188 comments Last night, I finished Summer of the Big Bachi, which in some ways was cozy (a gardener is the main sleuth), but others not (flashbacks to the atomic bomb being dropped in Hiroshima, a woman who knew too much being beaten to death). The mystery was intense and it's never pleasant being reminded of WWII and the a-bomb, but nonetheless, I was drawn into this book. Not honestly sure if I'll read more in the series, but I wouldn't dissuade anyone from reading this book.

Wouldn't we just love to meet up with Hamish, lol! I'm a fan as well and did you know there was a Hamish series on the BBC? I got the DVDs through Netflix and though the actor who portrayed Hamish was not how I'd pictured my hero, the series was a real treat!

I met Naomi Hirahara at B'con in 2003. It was actually before the book was released, but some sellers had this book available and I got a copy. Mas Arai is an interesting character and the book was very good. She spoke on a panel about mysteries and war and talked about her parents who got sent to one of the Japanese internment camps here in the US during WWII. Very interesting, and nice, lady.

Yes I did see the series, & no, the guy who played Hamish was too short & didn't have red hair either. But everyone else in the series was wonderful, so I just pretended it wasn't the same as the books, and enjoyed it that way. LOL!

I just started this one, but am only 2 chapters in. Another book I picked up has captured my interest over this one. And I just got an ARC of Sara Paretsky's new V.I. Warshawski book which comes out in September.

message 989: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I started Leslie Meier's Lucy Stone series a week or so ago. I have totally abandoned all other books to read this series. I tend to do that though. I enjoy the books but there are a couple of things that slow me down. One is that I'm only on the 4th book and her family is aging so fast that I'm thinking by the time I get caught up there will be grandchildren. Another is that she switches point of view with many different characters(not just the main ones) and she does it without warning...:) It doesn't stop me from wanting to keep reading though.

One of the things that keeps me from enjoying this series more is her husband. I'm sick of his complaining about her not cooking, cleaning, etc. Especially in the books where she's working full time. I think he's behavior crosses the boundaries into abusive at times. I also hate that she doesn't stand up for herself. My favorites in the series are the ones where he makes only a minimal appearance.

Mary (Biblophile) | 4610 comments I just finished the NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEED (Haunted Guesthouse, Bk 1) by E.J. Cooperman. I enjoyed it. Laughed at some of the snarky comments made by the main character and loved the ghosts. Sort of reminded me of the Haunted Bookshop series.

Someone said on another forum that Jeffrey Cohen wrote this series. I'm surprised if he did cause the writing style is entirely different. I don't like his current Double Feature series at all.

Thanks for giving it a try and I'm glad you didn't completely hate it!!! I'm gonna keep trying to write those 5 star novels. :>)

What I say about my humor sense is not an excuse but a sad reality :'( When somebody says a novel is funny I shiver, because I know that in a 99% I'm not going to like it.

Not at all. My dad read my short stories--the ONLY one he liked was the more serious murder mystery. He thinks my other stories are "silly" not "funny." My mom, OTOH, thought Executive Lunch was scary. Go figure. I did rewrite the scene that scared her. :>)

My most non-silly book that is out to date is probably "Sage" ... or maybe "Catch an Honest Thief." Probably Catch an Honest Thief. If you'd like to try one of those instead, PM me and I'll send you a free copy for Smashwords where you can download it for your reader. No guarantees though. I may have tried to be funny in a spot or two!!!

Best,
Maria
