I read the first in this series and didn't like it. Am wondering if I should give it another shot. I think I didn't care for the first one so much because of the La Llorona storyline, which I am beyond familiar with.

Kelley (booknerd69) Just finished Sing It to Her Bones by Marcia Talley. I gave it 3 stars. It started out with a lot of promise, but then it kind of slacked off. Figuring out the bad guy(s) was pretty easy and the pay-off lasted far too long. I will probably try another one in the series, but like this one, I will get it from the library.

Kimberly (whatkreads) Just finished Leftover Dead (Trailer Park Mystery, #5) by Jimmie Ruth Evans .

Heidi | 2446 comments Just finished The Mournful Teddy (A Bear Collector's Mystery, #1) by John J. Lamb . I liked it, but the main couples constant love towards each other kind of got on my nerves. I know, I am heartless!

I was up until about midnight last night because I had - yes, had - to finish Fellowship of Fear before I could go to bed. Really liked that one. Have now picked up The Dark Place, but have found the beginning more difficult to get into than the first book. Here's hoping it becomes more engaging!

Heather, same for me with both books. I don't know if, after [book:The Dark Place
I'm going to continue with the author.

Heather & Marisa, keep reading him! The Dark Place is probably the least exciting of all the books -- the rest (at least the ones I've read & I've read a lot of them) are very exciting. Gideon & John Lau become good friends so John features prominently in the rest of the series.

Thanks for the encouragement, Kate! I really liked John in the first book, so it's good to hear we'll be seeing more of him.

Well, Kate, I'll try the next one then, because "The dark place" was disappointing after I read the first one.

Barb | 40 comments Just finished 'Wheel of Fate' by Kate Sedley and 'Miss Julia Renews Her Vows' by Ann B. Ross. Two totally different locales and eras...both interesting and fun reads.

message 812: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments I have to agree with Kate - I've read every one of the Aaron Elkins Skeleton Detective series and some are better than others but many are excellent imho. I can't wait for his next one to come out.

message 813: by Courtney (new)

Courtney (cddimmitt) Barb, I read several of the Miss Julia books. I eventually gave up on them though. They were cute. I think I just wasn't in the mood. I might go back and try them again sometime.

I just finished Anne of Windy Poplars by L.M. Montgomery. It was a slow book. I enjoyed it enough. I still plan to read the rest of the series. I'm in the mood for something different now though.

Finished reading The Dark Place by Aaron Elkins. Though it started off slow and a bit difficult to get into, it did get better. Will certainly give the next book in the series a try, though not right away. I have other books clamoring to be read!

Sherrie (vampirekisses2) | 426 comments Finished Sprinkle with Murder (Cupcake Bakery Mystery, #1) by Jenn McKinlay tonight, I loved it! If I can finish a book in 2 days I give it 5 stars for holding my interest.

Sherrie: Don't know that I can agree with you about reading a book in two days makes it a 5 star. I picked up The Puzzle Lady vs. The Sudoku Lady yesterday at the library. We didn't get home till after 6 and I started reading it as I ate dinner. I'm done with it and I gave it a 2 star and I'm considering going back and giving it a 1 star. I have read the whole series, like the main character Cora (didn't in the first few books but she came to "grow on me") but this book's mystery was so convoluted that it was almost ridiculous.

message 817: by Sherrie (new)

Sherrie (vampirekisses2) | 426 comments I really liked the book and it did hold my interest the whole way through. Don't think just because i finished it in 2 days was the only reason i gave it 5 stars but finishing it in 2 days made it that much better for me. Usually it takes me a week or more to read a book that I'm sorta interested in finishing. I've been reading Fed Up for a while now and still can't finish the book.

message 818: by Julia (new)

Julia (juliawebb) I just finished One Bad Apple-Sheila Connolly. I found it enjoyable and will probably continue the series. I have others in line first tho.

message 819: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments Just finished Night of the Living Deed (A Haunted Guesthouse Mystery, #1) by E.J. Copperman and really enjoyed it. I look forward to more in the series. Also finished Death of an Obnoxious Tourist (Five Star Mystery Series) by Maria Hudgins and I had also bought the next book in that series so I have that to read.

message 820: by Courtney (last edited Jun 13, 2010 08:19AM) (new)

Courtney (cddimmitt) I can agree that a book earns points for me if I have the desire to finish it really quickly. If I don't want to put the book down, it says something. It might not make it an automatic five stars, but it's more than likely going to get a good review and more stars than one that doesn't hold my attention like that.

I'm currently reading Dead Girls Don't Wear Diamonds and I read over half of it in one sitting yesterday. It's definitely going to get more stars than the first one in the series. I generally rate the series as a whole. However, certain books can increase or decrease the stars for that series. This book (#2) will increase it to 4 stars for me. It's a series that I think I will really enjoy, especially after I get to know the characters better.

I really liked this one, too, and gave it 5 stars since you can't give 1/2 stars here. My own grading system is 1-10, and this actually falls at a 9 with me. I don't rate many books a 10, but have actually had 2 books that I've rated a 10 this year, Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater and Changes (The Dresden Files, #12) by Jim Butcher .

I'm reading Night of the Living Deed (A Haunted Guesthouse Mystery, #1) by E.J. Copperman and haven't made much headway with it, so far. What I've read has been good, tho.

I liked the early books in this series, but the last 2 have been so bad I'm done with it.

message 825: by Barb (new)

Barb | 40 comments I see some are discussing what makes a good read and if finishing a book in two days makes a difference in one's rating. I remember reading Nancy Drew books in a couple of hours and begging Sr. Annunciata to let me go back to the school library for another. I don't think the length of time it took me to read meant they weren't all that good...at that age, if a book kept me so interested that I would finish it that quickly, I think it was an excellent book! Sr. had me recap the story to her before I was allowed that precious return trip to the library so I know I remembered each one. These days, a well written book makes me forget other chores to be done as I hurry back to the story. What are your thoughts on this?

message 826: by Sherrie (new)

Sherrie (vampirekisses2) | 426 comments Barb, I agree with you because I remember being in middle school and getting through the R.L. Stine Fear Street series rather fast and wanting more. These days when I'm reading a good book I can't get to sleep at a decent hour because I want to find out what happens.

message 827: by Suzanne (new)

Suzanne | 188 comments Last Saturday I finished Glazed Murder and am giving it 2 stars. I really wanted to like it, but just thought the characters, especially the dialogue!, fell flat. I might try the second book to see if the series gets better, but it's nowhere near the top of my list.

Today I finished A Slice of Murder which I liked. I liked the main characters, especially the two sisters Eleanor and Maddie, as well as the small town setting. I wish there had been a little more description of the pizzas and pizza making process.

message 828: by Tracy T. (new)

Tracy T. I finished reading Murder on Astor Place (A Gaslight Mystery, #1) by Victoria Thompson yesterday. It only took me about 2 hours and I really enjoyed it. I can't wait to read the next one. Even my sister, who isn't a big cozy-mystery reader, is enjoying it.

message 829: by Kelley (new)

Kelley (booknerd69) Tracy, I just started the 3rd on in the series, Murder on Gramercy Park, and it is just as enjoyable as the first two. I really like this series. I hope you and your sister continue to like it as well. I loaned my sister the first two and she liked them as well!

I have the second one coming from Paperback Swap. I hope it gets here soon.

Erin L (wellreadmoose) | 505 comments I finished up The Eyre Affair (Thursday Next, #1) by Jasper Fforde this morning. I wanted so badly to finish it last night but I couldn't keep my eyes open any longer. Even so, I read about the last 10-15 pages at my desk when I *should* have been working.

message 832: by Tracy T. (new)

Tracy T. I love Jasper Fforde, but I prefer the Nursery Crimes and Shades of Grey series to the Thursday Next books (I've only read the first 2 though). However, Pickwick is still one of my favorite literary pets ever.

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 821 comments I finally finished Body Movers (Body Movers, #1) by Stephanie Bond by Stephanie Bond and really liked it. The characters did some pretty dumb stuff, but they were still likable...so I plan to read the next one.

message 834: by Courtney (new)

Courtney (cddimmitt) I finished Dead Girls Don't Wear Diamonds by Nancy Martin. This was a really quick read for me. I wasn't sure if I wanted to continue with the series after reading the first one, but I definitely do now! I'll be going to the library to pick up the rest of them.

I really enjoyed this series overall, but towards book 6 it starts getting a little tedious. I'm still waiting for book 7 though since I want to see where it goes.

You stayed up reading all night when you were younger? I still do that quite frequently, in fact my normal time to turn off the light is about 3 a.m. but if I'm really into the book I sometimes read till 4:30 a.m.--5:00 a.m.

I often have trouble sleeping, so figure if I'm awake I might as well read, whether I have to get up early for work or not. Sometimes a chapter or two before bed helps. Sometimes it's more like half a book.

message 840: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (lissieb7) | 80 comments I finished Envious Casca today! It was a fun mystery. I suspected the true villain, but couldn't figure out just how he did it or what that blasted book about the Austrian Empress had to do with anything. It's fun when there's still something of a riddle at the end. I must have been pretty into it because I wanted to scream at the Inspector to look closer at the missing book! I'll definitely try more of Georgette Heyer's work. I'm curious about her Regency romances as well.

message 841: by Shannon (new)

Shannon (dolphinlover) | 290 comments I have finally finished You've Got Murder (Turing Hopper, #1) by Donna Andrews which was a very charming book. I was a bit put off by the italicized portions of this book. The story was great the main character was lovable and the storyline was totally original. Ms. Andrews did well on this series starring Turing Hopper.

Kelley and Tracy, I am on Murder on Mulberry Bend. I was lucky enough that my local library had them all checked in except one. Which just came in today! I love this series......

message 843: by Kelley (new)

Kelley (booknerd69) Jerelyn, I will probably hit up my library for as many as I can in this series. I trade books with my sister, so we usually buy pbks, but there are so many in the series I might have to tell her she is on her own and I wll save money getting them at the library :)

message 844: by [deleted user] (new)

Kelley, I am finding that my library is a great resource for mysteries. Where with other genre's I follow can be a bit hit or miss. I have a friend who insists I try ILL Inter Library Loans but I haven't tried it yet. I am rather impulsive about reading. When I find a series I tend to get them all and read them straight away. Plus the savings are another huge plus!

message 845: by Kelley (new)

Kelley (booknerd69) Jerelyn, believe me, I know what a wonderful resource a library can be. I worked in one for over 10 years, my husband still works there and we even met there. Now, we're pushing the love on our daughter, who loves reading as well. I just need to remember to get the books from there, instead of always running to the bookstore to buy one. Really need to save some pennies :)

Marisa, I'm sooo glad you liked this book, and I'm going to forward your comment to Robert Spiller. He's a fellow Colorado mystery author and is in my critique group. So, I get to read all his books in rough form. I still buy and read them all after they're published, so I can see how they turned out after editing. Bob is a math teacher himself, so he knows of what he writes! I call Bonnie Pinkwater "Bob with a skirt on". ;-)
