Well, I've just finished The Diva Runs Out of Thyme and I've not liked it (a exception, I see ;) ). Definitively, I won't follow the series. I don't know, I dislike the main character and the plot doesn't hook me either.

Yes, I've seen doormats with more spirit.

message 708: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I finished French Polished Murder last night. I really enjoyed this book maybe a bit better than the first in the series. There were a couple of spots that made me laugh out loud. I'm looking forward to the next one already. I appreciate when the author has the characters grow and change--staying exactly the same all the time grows boring.

I agree with you here Melodie. So glad that there is so much variety out there so that we can all find reads that are satisfying for us.

Heather: I liked all of the Lily Bard "Shakespeare" series. There are only 5 and there won't be any more. Nor will there be any more of the Aurora Teagarden books.

message 711: by Erin L (new)

Erin L (wellreadmoose) | 505 comments High Five <- Stayed up to finish this last night. So far Stephanie is getting better with each book even if she isn't getting any better as a bounty hunter. I love the interesting minor characters that pop up in each book as well.

message 712: by Tammy (new)

Tammy I just finished "Lead A Horse to Murder" by Cynthia Baxter. It was one of her 'Reighning Cats and Dogs Mysteries', and I didn't care for it too much. It was a little slow, maybe too much detail about polo (which I don't care for anyway). I may try another in her series later, but I've had enough for right now.

I'm heading to the library during my lunch break to see if I can find a couple of books that fit the June theme ........

Happy Reading Eveyone!

Leslie I loved the rats...for Dyce of course! Not me though--my house is a rat free zone! They were foster rats anyway...won't be back for the next book. (I hope!)

I did like the first book (read in 2007), and had meant to continue with the series but just never got round to it until this week (too many books!). I really liked book two (Duke), maybe even a little bit better than the first.

Caroline | 661 comments Okay, I just finished French Polished Murder (got past the baby rats) and it was good. I'm excited though - there are about 9 books due to be released on 1 June that I want to get - 3 of which are the first in new series. I always like new series because if I enjoy them, that means there'll be more authors for me to read. : )

Susan (sumagoo) | 131 comments Just finished A Case of Bad Taste by Lori Copeland. A really nice comfortable read. It has three generations of women learning to live under one roof. Had some great laugh moments. Enjoyed!! Have number two ready to go but I think I will something else first.

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments I finished Tressed to Kill (Southern Beauty Shop) by Lila Dare and really liked it! With all the new series that have started recently it's been interesting weeding out the good ones from the bad ones. This is definitely one of the good ones! Instantly likeable characters.

Shannon (dolphinlover) | 290 comments I have just finished Sassy Cinderella and the Valiant Vigilante A Ruby Taylor Mystery (Ruby Taylor Mysteries) by Sharon Dunn and liked it a whole lot. I am looking forward to getting and reading the next and final installment to this series Cow Crimes and the Mustang Menace A Ruby Taylor Mystery by Sharon Dunn . Very nice Christian cozy series so far.

message 728: by Caroline (new)

Caroline | 661 comments You know, some publishers have authors write different series under different names but I'd rather know who they are so I'll have an idea if I'll like their books or not. I mean - I know I like one author's books and now she is starting another series under another name and the publisher doesn't want people to know it's her but I found out so I think I'm going to like the new series. But I wish the publishers would just be straight up because I have a feeling a lot more people would try a new series from an author they already know and like. Okay, maybe this is off topic but I just had to say it. LOL

Finished Aunt Dimity's Good Deed this evening. I really liked this one. Have decided to read one more in that series (Aunt Dimity Digs In) before setting it aside again for a while. I have loaners from a friend to get to and I don't want to become bored with this series through over-saturation.

When I first discovered Robert B. Parker's Spenser series some years ago I devoured them all one after the other without a break. Of course back then there weren't nearly as many of them as there are now! I haven't done that with a series since.

Nicola (murder-she-read) | 18 comments I have just finished Cat of the Century (Mrs. Murphy, #18) by Rita Mae Brown which was a real disappointment. It feels like Rita Mae Brown doesn't like writing the books any more and instead is using it for political rantings.

Also finished reading Arson and Old Lace (Far Wychwood, #1) by Patricia Harwin by Patricia Harwin.

Enjoyed reading all of the books. :-)

Denise | 618 comments Hi all, hope everyone is having a good holiday weekend. I finished State Fair this morning. Had a bit of a tear up at the end. (I cry very easily and about most anything!) I loved the story, yes, I figured out who was behind everything so no surprise at the revelation of "who dun it" but I really like this series and I enjoy the characters and their life story probably more than the mystery part of the books in the series. I will say though that I found an awful lot of errors both in spelling and in either adding or leaving out words in a sentence. Although I'm not in publishing I would assume that they have a way to spell check and grammar check before printing. I wish they would use it!!! The errors distract me from the story. One of my pet peeves.

UGH! Denise, this is one of my biggest peeves as well. I had a simialr experience last fall with a book by Heather Graham. I'd read others by her, and was greatly intrigued by the premise of this one, but it seemed you couldn't go two pages without some error slapping you in the face - and some of them were HUGE. Never felt more disgusted with a book in my life, and am now reluctant to pick up anything new by her. I would have stopped reading it altogther except I really wanted to see how everything tied together. I'm glad you enjoyed State Fair despite its many shortcomings!

I liked STATE FAIR, but not nearly as much as most of the others in the series. Dove is just about my favorite character and there wasn't near enough of her and what there was wasn't up to my usual expectations.

Hah! I had the same reaction when I saw Sister Schubert's at Sam's and had to try them - delicious.
You know Anne George passed away in 2001, so sad, but you might enjoy this interview with her....

Kimberly (kimberly75149) | 24 comments I just finished Holly Blues (China Bayles, #18) by Susan Wittig Albert , the latest China Bayles mystery. I must say I couldn't put it down. She finally delved into McQuaid's ex-wife's story. I also finished the latest Sandford - Storm Prey (Lucas Davenport, #20) by John Sandford . Definitely not a cozy, but excellent as always.

message 745: by Denise (new)

Denise | 618 comments Heather: I really like the people in the Earlene Fowler series (Benni, Gabe, Dove, Hud, etc) and that kept me going even with all the errors. I would like to hear from one of our authors in our group as to how books are prepared for publishing and what kind of checks and balances there are in place to catch spelling and other types of errors (like two of the same word in the sentence, their instead of they're, etc).

Melodie: I liked State Fair as well as the other books in the series. I liked getting to know more about Dove's sister, Garnet. I like that she and her husband as well as Emory's dad, Uncle Boone are moving to San Celina. As for Dove, I didn't see her portrayed any differently than in other books in the series. Dove has a pretty aggressive personality and tends to boss everyone around. Obviously that doesn't work with her sister. I also thought that Fowler did a good job of bringing in the bi-racial relationships/marriages and how Benni got a look at what Gabe and her other non-Caucasian friends have dealt with all their lives. Benni thought she knew but found out she really didn't have a clue. I especially liked the scene when the women were making the dolls and Jazz confronted the other African-American women about their "hair" comments. It was interesting that she "didn't get it". I learned something from that dialog myself. Overall I thought State Fair was an excellent addition to the series.

Kimberly: I love the China Bayles series, and I agree that it was good to learn more about McQuaid's ex-wife/Brian's mother, Sally. One thing I can say, China is more WOMAN than I am. I would not have invited one of my husband's ex-wives to stay at my house. (Actually, I couldn't have anyway, I was the first wife in both cases but did have to deal with the wives that followed me a few times over the years.)

I love the characters in this series, too, and I read the books for them, not for the mysteries. I liked STATE FAIR, just not as much as others in the series. My favorite is still MARINER'S COMPASS. The racial tones to this story were interesting, tho she has dealt with Gabe's feelings of not quite knowing where he belongs in other books, like KANSAS TROUBLES. I have been very fortunate in my life to have had and still have some wonderful black friends, both male & female. And I have an Hispanic sister-in-law. It's helped me see how different this "life" experience is for all of us. I have heard that conversation about "good hair" a few times over the years.
