Also read some of the China Bayles books for the first time and the first of the Cat in the Stacks. It was a good weekend.

I am a big fan of Chalaine Harris's other works as well as the Sookie Stackhouse. I have not read the last two either and just read yesterday on one of these forums that she ended the series. I guess it had to happen someday.

I just read the most recent Mercy Thompson and I think it was really good. I read the Alpha and Omega, but don't like the story as well as the ones about Mercy.

Kathy | 97 comments Last week I finished the last in a series Susan Wittig Albert wrote on Beatrice Potter. She clearly had just this number in mind and the series ended. I wish she had written more because I thought they were very good.

I do read her other books as well. I like that she focuses her stories around a particular type of herb or flower and adds things that they can be used for. And that she cautions against those who don't know what they are doing trying this at home. Good advice.

I'm about half way through the last Sookie book, Dead Ever After (Sookie Stackhouse, #13) by Charlaine Harris . Am finding it very slow going, probably because I know it's not ending the way I want it to. She had said a couple of years ago that #13 would be the last one. I've been a fan of the series since I found the first one at a Waldenbooks in 2001 right after it had been released. Sorry to see it end.

I like the Mercy Thompson books, too. Thought the new one was quite good, much better than the one before it. Agree that the Alpha & Omega books aren't the same quality.

The new China Bayles book, Widow's Tears by Susan Wittig Albert , is just stellar. Found myself reaching for the Kleenex a time or 2.

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments Finished Dead Ever After (Sookie Stackhouse, #13) by Charlaine Harris last night. Of course it didn't end the way I wanted it to, but then I knew books ago in this series that it wouldn't end the way I wanted it to. However, it still wasn't a bad book and I am just amazed at all the abuse Ms. Harris is taking about this. They're HER stories. She had the ideas and they were hers to do with as she pleased. No one forced anyone to read them! Some people REALLY need to get over themselves!

Yeah, when I cheated and searched for spoilers, I was appalled at how nasty people were right on her Facebook page, etc.! I mean jeez! I'm pissed about Sookie not ending up with who I think she should have, but I'd never be so bad mannered as to abuse the writer over it. Very low class. But academically, it's amazing how emotionally attached people become to the characters in their favorite books, isn't it?

Maria Schneider (bearmountainbooks) | 191 comments Just finished No Money Down by Julie Moffet. LOVE the Lexi Carmichael series! This one actually came out after the first two--it's more of a prequel and some places have it labeled book 3. It's really book 1. Read it first (although I didn't and it was funny and a great adventure so I didn't really care that it was out of order.) If you like zany and over-the-top fun, this is a great series. Great geeky characters, a good little mystery...just fun stuff.

Kathy | 97 comments Melissa wrote: "Just finished Quilt or Innocence A Southern Quilting Mystery by Elizabeth Spann Craig, ( 1st in this series ) and really enjoyed it! =)"

I have a harder time with some of these books because I don't do the thing they center on. I don't quilt, or scrapbook. But I like several books that center around knitting. Maggie Sefton for example.

And since I love to read, books about bookstores and booksellers usually catch my interest.

There are also several series out there that talk about fashion and when I was younger I shopped until I dropped. I can still appreciate vintage clothes stores and designers.

Lorraine (saanichlori) | 418 comments I just finished Cinnamon Roll Murder by Joanne Fluke. Another enjoyable read. I guessed that Doctor Bev was a badun right away. I think I just like the story of life in Lake Eden. Hannah needs to get more help at the store so she can catch up on her sleep, and decide to marry. Just one more to go in this series (unless the author writes more).

This seems to contain a spoiler. If so, please mark it as a spoiler so you don't give away the mystery for those who have not read it. To mark spoilers put < > around the word spoiler at the start of your "I guessed..." sentence and < / > at the end. Readers will have a choice to view the spoiler or not.

(spoiler)I guessed....(/spoiler). Substitute < > for ( )

Maria Schneider (bearmountainbooks) | 191 comments Not really a cozy, but pretty cozy: I just finished the Best Chicken Breeds: 12 Types of Hens that Lay Lots of Eggs, Make Good Pets, and Fit in Small Yards It's a bit repetitious (keeps telling me how great the book is because it took hours of research to provide such concise info). And it is good info and a great list, but the author probably could have just listed the 12 types and why along with the attributes. It isn't a long book, which is actually a bonus. For the price it's not a bad place to start researching chickens.

I have wanted chickens for a while, and both my cats agree. My husband...not so much. :>)

We have chickens! 3 of them and my cats "guard" them from other birds stealing their feed. They're quite entertaining... and two of our chickens lay blue-shelled eggs, which is very cool. :)

I'll have to check out that book - thanks!

That book (12 best breeds) has at least one breed that supposedly lays in the winter. Maybe two. But double check to see if they get along with other birds. It had a nice section for each type to say whether it would do well with other birds. That way if you mix you don't end up with one or more hen-pecked! Most people in Texas seem to have the spring/summer layers too. But if it gets too hot, they don't lay in the summer either. Two summers ago it was so blasted hot here a lot of people lost their chickens and so now all the fresh eggs are VERY expensive. I hope this is a better year for the chickens AND the eggs.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) Maria - Thanks for the tip about the book. I've d/l'd it but haven't read it yet. We have two Aracauna's and one Wyandotte. They seem to get along well - the Wyandotte did a bit of hen-pecking on one of the Araucauna's at first, but seems to have settled down.

We had a few really hot days here (100+) that had DH and I running home and putting frozen bottles of water and frozen watermelon in the coop with them - and once I set up a fan, but they were too scared of it to sit in the breeze it provided. :D But they're coop/run is under a row of 5 pear trees, so they were in the shade the whole time and seemed to do just fine. :)

The Aracuana's are one of the breeds mentioned in the book. Might even be the number one breed. I don't recall, but I remember the book saying it was from Aus and what a great layer it is.

Summer before last we had record number of days above 100 and I think people just could not keep the birds cool enough. It was terrible--no rain and just hot, hot all the time with no relief. It stressed the body out. I know it had to be difficult for anyone with livestock. You can do it for a day or so, but then it gets worse and worse. I hope this summer is better for all of us!

It does give them a fresh start with expectations--both for the reader and the writer. I think it lets them explore new ways of writing or new characters and such.
