What Cozy Did You Just Finish Reading??? (Archive)
Just finished A Crafty Killing,
, the first in that series by Miranda James and can't wait to get my hands on the rest! Also read some of the China Bayles books for the first time and the first of the Cat in the Stacks. It was a good weekend.
Jeanie wrote: "I love that series and am about to start the newest one, Change of Heart, ..."Thanks for the heads up that it's been released! Can't wait to read it. :)

I have not read the last two either and just read yesterday on one of these forums that she ended the series. I guess it had to happen someday.
I just read the most recent Mercy Thompson and I think it was really good. I read the Alpha and Omega, but don't like the story as well as the ones about Mercy.
Last week I finished the last in a series Susan Wittig Albert wrote on Beatrice Potter. She clearly had just this number in mind and the series ended. I wish she had written more because I thought they were very good. I do read her other books as well. I like that she focuses her stories around a particular type of herb or flower and adds things that they can be used for. And that she cautions against those who don't know what they are doing trying this at home. Good advice.

. Am finding it very slow going, probably because I know it's not ending the way I want it to. She had said a couple of years ago that #13 would be the last one. I've been a fan of the series since I found the first one at a Waldenbooks in 2001 right after it had been released. Sorry to see it end.I like the Mercy Thompson books, too. Thought the new one was quite good, much better than the one before it. Agree that the Alpha & Omega books aren't the same quality.

I accomplished very little this week...I can't believe I read all 4 of the Islands of Aloha Mystery Series by Joann Bassett.a cousin of mine is moving to Hawaii in a couple of weeks & I started reading cozies based there :-) I enjoyed the characters (Pali Moon is the wedding planner/sleuth)...the scenery...and the use of Hawaiian words for a taste of authenticity.

I love books because they do take me places I've never been.
I've just finished the sixth book in the No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, In the Company of Cheerful Ladies,
. Another place I've never been, LOL!
Finished
last night. Of course it didn't end the way I wanted it to, but then I knew books ago in this series that it wouldn't end the way I wanted it to. However, it still wasn't a bad book and I am just amazed at all the abuse Ms. Harris is taking about this. They're HER stories. She had the ideas and they were hers to do with as she pleased. No one forced anyone to read them! Some people REALLY need to get over themselves!
Just finished
wasn't sure I was going to like it but turns out it was good. Looking forward to the rest of the series & hopefully getting a better 'feel' for the characters.
Just finished a fabulous cozy:
, first in the Pawsitively Organic mystery series. Deserves 5 stars and more!

I'm pissed about Sookie not ending up with who I think she should have, but I'd never be so bad mannered as to abuse the writer over it. Very low class. But academically, it's amazing how emotionally attached people become to the characters in their favorite books, isn't it?

I hope I can get through them before seeing a spoiler.
Just finished
Pies and Prejudice by Ellery Adams. Setting is almost identical to Bailey Cates' Brownies and Broomsticks
and not nearly as well done.

I can think of several I have "book crushes" on! Eric, from the Sookie series, probably being at the top of the list! LOL
Just finished No Money Down by Julie Moffet. LOVE the Lexi Carmichael series! This one actually came out after the first two--it's more of a prequel and some places have it labeled book 3. It's really book 1. Read it first (although I didn't and it was funny and a great adventure so I didn't really care that it was out of order.) If you like zany and over-the-top fun, this is a great series. Great geeky characters, a good little mystery...just fun stuff.

, ( 1st in this series ) and really enjoyed it! =)"I have a harder time with some of these books because I don't do the thing they center on. I don't quilt, or scrapbook. But I like several books that center around knitting. Maggie Sefton for example.
And since I love to read, books about bookstores and booksellers usually catch my interest.
There are also several series out there that talk about fashion and when I was younger I shopped until I dropped. I can still appreciate vintage clothes stores and designers.
I just finished Cinnamon Roll Murder by Joanne Fluke. Another enjoyable read. I guessed that Doctor Bev was a badun right away. I think I just like the story of life in Lake Eden. Hannah needs to get more help at the store so she can catch up on her sleep, and decide to marry. Just one more to go in this series (unless the author writes more).

Not really a cozy, but pretty cozy: I just finished the Best Chicken Breeds: 12 Types of Hens that Lay Lots of Eggs, Make Good Pets, and Fit in Small Yards It's a bit repetitious (keeps telling me how great the book is because it took hours of research to provide such concise info). And it is good info and a great list, but the author probably could have just listed the 12 types and why along with the attributes. It isn't a long book, which is actually a bonus. For the price it's not a bad place to start researching chickens. I have wanted chickens for a while, and both my cats agree. My husband...not so much. :>)

I'll have to check out that book - thanks!

I love fresh eggs. In the summer (around now) I can trade veggies from my garden for fresh eggs, but it's been a loooong time over the winter without any fresh ones!

Nothing like fresh eggs! My niece couldn't believe egg yolks were really such a bright orange when they're farm fresh.

I know. We had chickens when I was growing up. I have plans for deviled eggs the minute I can trade for some!!!
Maria wrote: "I love fresh eggs. In the summer (around now) I can trade veggies from my garden for fresh eggs, but it's been a loooong time over the winter without any fresh ones!"We're just going into winter here and our chickens (chooks in Aussie-speak) have stopped laying. We had to buy our eggs for the first time since our three lovely birds arrived back in November and already I can't wait for spring to arrive!!! :)
Finished reading Killer in Crinolines last night and enjoyed it a lot more than I did the first one.

That book (12 best breeds) has at least one breed that supposedly lays in the winter. Maybe two. But double check to see if they get along with other birds. It had a nice section for each type to say whether it would do well with other birds. That way if you mix you don't end up with one or more hen-pecked! Most people in Texas seem to have the spring/summer layers too. But if it gets too hot, they don't lay in the summer either. Two summers ago it was so blasted hot here a lot of people lost their chickens and so now all the fresh eggs are VERY expensive. I hope this is a better year for the chickens AND the eggs.
Maria - Thanks for the tip about the book. I've d/l'd it but haven't read it yet. We have two Aracauna's and one Wyandotte. They seem to get along well - the Wyandotte did a bit of hen-pecking on one of the Araucauna's at first, but seems to have settled down. We had a few really hot days here (100+) that had DH and I running home and putting frozen bottles of water and frozen watermelon in the coop with them - and once I set up a fan, but they were too scared of it to sit in the breeze it provided. :D But they're coop/run is under a row of 5 pear trees, so they were in the shade the whole time and seemed to do just fine. :)

I don't recall, but I remember the book saying it was from Aus and what a great layer it is.
Summer before last we had record number of days above 100 and I think people just could not keep the birds cool enough. It was terrible--no rain and just hot, hot all the time with no relief. It stressed the body out. I know it had to be difficult for anyone with livestock. You can do it for a day or so, but then it gets worse and worse. I hope this summer is better for all of us!
I finished
and it was amazing! The story was very well woven and the writing style exquisite- I love Laura DiSilverio! Grandpa Atherton is the character who stands out in this series! I'll undoubtedly keep reading!
Finished
and really liked it! Had I known going in that J.J. Cook was Joyce & Jim Lavene I'd never have bought it, and I would have missed a good read. I've never liked anything else I've tried to read by them. Guess this is a good argument for writers using different names for different series!

I think it lets them explore new ways of writing or new characters and such.

I didn't know that either, and you're right - if I had known I would have passed this book up and missed out! I hope they keep doing what they did with this book, it was a great read!
