I thought both books in the Magical Bakery series were pretty good.

Danielle (dizzy_booknerd) | 121 comments I also just finished Cinnamon Roll Murder (Hannah Swensen, #15) by Joanne Fluke and I actually really liked it! The previous book in this series that I read (Lemon Meringue Pie murder) I thought was only so-so, but this one I liked much better, so I'll probably try out some more in this series at some point. I liked this story, particularly what happened at the very end. =)

Caitlin C (caitkom) | 199 comments Just finished Nearly Departed in Deadwood (Deadwood Mystery, #1) by Ann Charles and loved it! I bought all the other ones in the series immediately!! I love all Violets quips and the zaniness she encounters!

I felt the same way! I immediately bought them all on Kindle, devoured them and then bought the paperback versions for my "will re-read bookshelf". :D

I read a Q&A by the author and she mentioned her intent was to write a cozy mystery, and Deadwood was the result - I wouldn't call these cozy at all!

Lynne | 86 comments I just finished Night of the Living Deed last night. It was alright but felt like an introduction book. I'll read another one in the series to see if I like it.

Christina I finished Carbs and Cadavers by J. B. Stanley the other day.

❂ Murder by Death (murderbydeath) I finished up Arsenic and Old Cake a couple of days ago and was really pleased to find it an excellent read! Sooo much better than the first two!

And I just finished The Silent Ghost - a Ghost of Granny Apples novella by Sue Ann Jaffarian. If you are a fan of Granny I can't recommend this short ebook story highly enough! It was excellent!

I've liked all the books in the Piece of Cake series, but know opinions have been mixed on them. Have stayed away from the Granny Apples novella since it said it deals with Emma's daughter. Thought it might spread the whole story idea too thin. Guess I'll have to check it out now!

Melodie (melodieco) | 5280 comments Finished What's a Witch to Do? by Jennifer Harlow . Probably a 3.5 star read. Think I mentioned that it's not a straight cozy. Lots of language for those of you who don't like that and some sex, too.

I'm reading Mother, Murder and Me right now. It's a cute story, but has the same issues. Language and some sex issues, although it's not too overdone. I'd have to say it's a good story though, because I'm still reading it and enjoying it.

Something good happens at the end, eh? I hope it's what I want to happen. I've been reading this series in order, so have a few more before I get to Cinnamon Roll, but I keep saying to Hannah, "Smarten up!"

I don't mind "language" since I tend to use "colorful metaphors" a lot myself, and don't mind a good sex scene either, but I know a lot of you don't like those things so that's why I made sure to mention them if you were thinking about this book. I really liked the book and am looking forward to the next one!

J. Giggles (miss_giggles) | 10 comments I just finished Pepperoni Pizza Can Be Murder (Pizza Lovers, #2) by Chris Cavender and though I enjoyed it well enough, I have to say I would NOT want to live in their town :) At the LEAST bit of trouble everybody bails on you! I prefer a more "tight knit" community in my Cozies. Ones you want to spend time with even if there isn't a mystery to solve :)

I'm enjoying this book, too. It's not actually sex scenes in this one, but some characters who have some wild sex issues. So mentioning the language and sex are kind of a warning for those who are sensitive. Just me, but I could do without some of the language, although in times of anger I can keep up with the best of 'em.

She's not getting anywhere. More of the same in RED VELVET CUPCAKE MURDER. I wasn't going to read it, but I got a deal to get the book for less than $5.00. Should have stuck with my original idea no matter what the price was. These books just piss me off now.

The only way I see her growing is annoying & condescending!! I used to love this series, but between the absolutely ridiculous "triangle" and Hannah constantly correcting people's grammar and "explaining" words......I'm pretty much over the edge with these books!

Those are the aspects of Hannah that I also dislike, she can be quite bitter and mean spirited towards others. With regard to the triangle, I don't think she deserves either Norman or Mike.

She certainly doesn't deserve either of them! Norm's too good a guy for her, and Mike would have NEVER stuck around this long if he wasn't getting laid!! LOL

Susie Fevella (susieinks) | 821 comments I'd like to say I finished Lost and Fondue (A Cheese Shop Mystery #2) by Avery Aames but I just couldn't do it. The first book was pretty good, but there are so many characters in this book you would have to make a flow-chart to keep track of everyone. There were too many things going on at the same time it was becoming a chore to read, so I give up! I have Clobbered by Camembert in the TBR pile, but I'm giving up on this series.

message 5484: by Karen M (new)

Karen M | 1436 comments I just finished The Unforgiving Minutes The Unforgiving Minutes (Brichter, Book 3) by Mary Monica Pulver which seems to be a prequel.

I've read the 1st book and Kori & Peter were already married, now in the 3rd book they've only just met. I've not read the 2nd book but I read the 4th & 5th books so I guess since I didn't read this series in order I deserve to be confused.

message 5485: by Leslie (new)

Leslie I finished The Man in Lower Ten The Man in Lower Ten by Mary Roberts Rinehart by our monthly author, Mary Roberts Rinehart. Quite good, 3 stars... the only thing that really dates the story is the sleeper arrangements on the train which didn't bother me at all.

I'm glad you mentioned this. The topic of book length was brought up on a writers' listserv that I'm on. I'm curious as to how long or short readers expect cozies to be. Anybody?

I think most of them average around 288 to 320 pages, which is about right. I doubt I'd read a cozy that was the size of some of the Stephen King "doorstops" I've read!

For me, it is partially a function of the quality of the writing - with superb writing, one could go up to say 400 pages, but for the majority I would say 200-300 pages. I am actually a fan of shorter rather than longer - more like Agatha Christie than Elizabeth George.

In reality Hannah would be considered a "ho" & her correcting grammar & explaining & explaining & explaining upsets me too!! Fluke talks down to us readers like we're idiots!
