Oh, that's too bad. I had high hopes for this series.
Speaking of MurderThis was a fun and enlightening book. An academic setting (which I always enjoy) and a murder with lots of suspects.
I read
last night and just adored it! Cozy mystery meets
with some paranormal thrown in for good measure! Already picked up
to read next!
Just finished
. Sometimes the main character seems a little juvenile, and the writing a little sappy, but it was still a pretty good book ;)
Joanne wrote: "I read

Deb wrote: "trying to read

Susie in KS wrote: "Just finished Iced Chiffon. It took me a little while to get into it, but once I did I really enjoyed it :)"I just read this one as well - I didn't really understand the way it ended - I must have missed something along the way. I thought that Kiki and Reagan were likeable enough but jumped to way too many conclusions!

Wasn't my favorite, I read this and the one in her lingerie series back to back. The characters were likeable enough but I thought that the writing wasn't awesome.
I just read Iced Chiffon and Foul Play at the Fair.Iced Chiffon was ok - I posted to another user that I thought Reagan and Kiki jumped to way too many conclusions way too fast - it was like frenetic almost. They weren't smart sleuths at all.
Foul Play at the Fair was better but I feel that the author played up that Liv was from NY way too much. Celebration Bay is in NY - she kept making it sound like Liv was from somewhere totally different? And that she was tough and could handle almost anything. One reviewer also said there wasn't enough 'fair' action which I felt was true.
In both books, the consignment shop day to day and the fair planning/fair running didn't get enough page time. The authors could've done better in weaving these details into the stories more.
I just finished
and really liked it! Jenn McKinlay never disappoints! She knows how to grab the reader's attention right from the beginning and plunge them in the atmosphere of the story. I'm also a big fan of her Cupcake Bakery series. Thank you, Jenn, and keep up the great writing!
I finished up Death of a Country Fried Redneck yesterday. It was better than the first one. Not great, but better.

You have to remember that Foul Play at the Fair is the first in a series, and there's a lot of background to establish in a first book -- locations, personalities, relationships, character history, etc. She did keep mentioning that Liv was originally from New York, but I took that to mean New York City, not New York state. Moving from NYC to a small town in upstate NY would be a HUGE change.
Deb wrote: "trying to read

I thought Allergic to Death was an enjoyable read. Not a great read but okay. I just wonder why every new series has to have the heroine recovering from finding her finance, hubby, or boyfriend messing around? Are there no independent women out there who can start their own business without being pushed into it? They all seem to have either ditzy, pushy, brainless, or bitter women as the main characters. Gets old after awhile.

byMelissa Bourbon Ramirez, and I thought it was a very interesting start to a cozy series. The main character inherits a dressmaking shop, where she still feels the "spirts" of her Grandma.
@Bibliophile -- try Sarah Cauldwell or Margot Arnold for female heroines who are intelligent & not obsessed about their love life...
I read a charming cozy called A Deadly Grind, which is the first in the new Vintage Kitchen mysteries. It was a great read, and I did not guess the killer! This is definitely a series I'm going to follow.

Gotta say, I loved
. The protagonist has created a unique business for herself, and the characters were quirky and fun. I didn't guess the ending at all. And there was a tiny little surprise at the end that made this cozy mystery all the more special.

Biblophile wrote: " Are there no independent women out there who can start their own business without being pushed into it?"It's been years since I read the first in the Savannah Reid series, but I don't think she was pushed into her own business.

I am guessing because she was a police officer in the beginning and then moved to being a PI??
That sounds right, Heidi. Like I said, it's been forever since I read the first books in the series, so I can't remember when things actually happened.

From what I remember, Savannah Reid was suspended from the police department for investigating someone high up (the mayor, I think), and she was told she was gaining a little too much weight.
I just finished An Uninvited Ghost
by E.J. Copperman. It's the 2nd book in the Haunted Guesthouse series. Before that, I read the 1st book, Night of the Living Deed
. The idea and the storytelling in both books were good, but I felt the characterization was lacking. I especially found the main character/sleuth, Alison Kerby, to be unlikable and annoying. But it might be just me, because a lot of other readers found Alison hilarious.

Just finished
. Loved it. This is one that I wish I had read in paper because I really love the cover too.
The Body in the SleighI just finished reading this book. I started reading this series years ago and enjoyed it until I had read everything in the series at that time. I found recently that there were newer books in the series and started with this one. I like this author and this book was good. I liked the characters and the setting. I have liked some of her earlier works that were just a little more interesting.
One question I have....I'm new to the group. I am looking for new authors of mysteries that are without excessive violence and vulgarity and felt this category of books might be suitable. I thought as I was reading the comments, that no one is really thrilled with the books they are reading. I've tried to find these type of books on my own in the past and have found some of them a little on the dull side. Has anyone else found that? Are there authors or books that people would actually rave about?
I just finished reading
and just loved it! It's the second book in the Vampire Chef Mysteries, and even better than the first one! Hope the author has another book in the works.

Liz wrote: "Are there authors or books that people would actually rave about? "Authors I really enjoy are G.A. McKevett, Jenn McKinlay, Carola Dunn, Laura Childs and Leslie Meier, to name a few :)
Melodie wrote: "Liz wrote: "A few I would rave about include Earlene Fowler, Susan Wittig Albert, Jenn McKinlay, Cricket McRae and Krista Davis..."I'll add Kerry Greenwood, Carolyn Hart, Kate Carlisle. :)
I've just finished reading Slightly Irregular. I had given up on this series continuing years ago when this book's pub date kept getting pushed back again and again, so I was thrilled to find not only it but it's sequel already out in print. yay! This series is a hoot, with lots of interesting sexual tension. But I know some of you dislike fashion talk, and there is a lot of that in this series.
Thank you Jennifer, Barb and Melodie! Appreciate getting a starting point. That should keep me busy for awhile. :-)
