One Day
question
Is anyone else nervous about this movie?

I LOVED One Day. I was initially looking forward to the movie as I thought they made great casting and director choices. Here's what makes me nervous. While the book is a dramedy- I would NOT classify it as a romantic comedy. It has romance, yes. But it's an edgy coming of age story. One of the only books that I would recommend equally to men and women (though it makes me sad that the girly US cover seems to repel male readers) The trailer makes me think that they're trying to turn this story into "The Notebook" which it is SO NOT. This is not some schmultzy story and I hate the idea of the movie making it one.

I read the book last month. LOVED IT. It's the first novel that I've read in years that has taken on such a deep resonance for me. (In my case, I graduated from college in the mid-1980s.)
A little more than 2 hours from now, I'll be going to Chinatown to see the movie version, with a pepperoni pizza and Cherry Ice drink close at hand. I'm holding my breath. I hope Anne Hathaway will pull it off (though I have already heard some complaints about her efforts to assume a Yorkshire accent) because I have a high regard for her acting based on the other movies in which I've seen her.

I'm going to see this movie tomorrow and I'm really excited.. I have read book so I hope the movie will as good as the book is
After reading the book I certainly won't go and see the film.
I got this book to read before I would see the movie. I've learned to NEVER see the movie before you read the book. I loved this book; and I have still not seen the movie yet. I'm not spending $9 to see it in theaters... but it'll be on dvd soon enough and I'm sure it can't be THAT bad. The movie might even better in some ways if you think about it.
I totally loved the movie! Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess were wonderful together and are such charismatic actors! I loved how the movie played out though some parts were different from the book. Overall, it was great, and I loved the book a whole lot more!
i like the book sooooooooooooooooooooooooo much and i cried like for an hour after i finish it i felt like i really know her. I am so excited to see the movie

Even though the book wasn't as fulfilling a read as I thought it would be I still plan on watching the film just to see how the stories told.
Disappointing movie. It played like a "One Day Greatest Hits". Too many emotional scenes from the book felt rushed (e.g., Dex's father telling him off at the train station, Emma & Ian's fight after they had broken up, Emma blowing up at Dex in the swank nightclub) in the movie. They probably should have skipped a few years so they could take their time with the rest. It ends up blunting the emotional impact.
For what it's worth, I have a tin ear for accents, but my wife is English, and she thought Anne Hathaway was passable as English but she tried too hard to sound Northern (and given that the movie doesn't bother telling us Emma's from Yorkshire, she could have saved the effort).

I've seen the movie, and I was very disappointed in it! I saw it the first day it came out and yes, overall it did have the story line of the book, but it had missed out little details that really made the book for me.
YES! I loved this book (apart from the ending, which I felt was contrived and cheating) and I don't want to see it mangled.
The only thing that worries me is Anne Hathaway's cheesy British accent. That could ruin the whole film...
Im excited to see the film even though I never expect them to get it completely right. I think Anne Hathaway is PERFECT to play Emma, I cant think who else would play her other than maybe Kate Winslet. I loved the book and am extra hopeful about the movie now Ive seen that David Nicholls is writing the script. Fingers are firmly crossed with this one.
Hi there! We absolutely LOVED the book here at handbag.com, but we were sceptical that the film adaptation would not live up, or that Anne Hathaway might fail to succeed in passing off as a convincing Emma. Her accent was rather questionable but we were pleasantly surprised! If you'd like to see our film review please do go to our website to see what we thought....

I agree with emily...the casting looks to be perfect. After reading the book, Anne Hathaway enjoyed it so much that she flew to London to meet with the director to convince her she was the perfect person to play Emma. Also, the movie supposedly follows the book very closely. The author, David Nicholls, also wrote the script for the movie...that is a BIG plus.
I can't wait until Friday....

Loved the book...Don't know about Anne Hathaway as Emma though... I have mixed feelings about seeing it.

same here...I loved the book but I couldn't watch the movie easily...something didn't click....I must confess I was a bit disapponted.
...more
I haven't seen the casting, but agree that One Day is NOT a romantic comedy. And after what happened with My Sister's Keeper ...
Can't say that I'm nervous about the movie. I was uncertain if I loved the book or not, and I find that strange. I gave it to someone to read and told them that they may or may not like it. I had mixed emotions. I think maybe and this is my thought - that I may have more of a connection to Max and Emma in the movie. Do you know what I mean ?
I thought they did a really good job with the movie. They couldn't fit everything in, but what they did include was important. I liked it!
I'm a book and movie addict so when you put the two together, it's irresistible. I thought the story was told in a unique way. Can't say I loved or hated it, but I did get invested in the characters and I did appreciate the author's work. I agree that it is not a romantic comedy and I hope it isn't tweaked and twisted to become that, but I always find it interesting to see what Hollywood does with films based on books so I will definitely see it.
I'm not really nervous about it. I think it goes without saying that it won't be as good as the book, but I'm at least hopeful that it will be better than most movies. As for it looking like a romantic comedy, those who have read the book know it isn't, and those who are not familiar with the book will need some type of hook to get them into the movie theater. At least, I hope that's the reasoning behind the ad campaign.
as long as it's not turned into some sappy chick flick that girls cry over at sleepovers i'll be happy.
i'm in love with the casting. anne hathaway and jim sturgess - can't think of a better pairing for emma and dex :)

I really liked this book but have only read it once - I need to read it again, I think. I loved it at the time but want to re-read! I thought the casting was petty horrible, actually, especially for Emma. So wish they'd picked someone else for her! I'm just not going to watch the movie at all - that's my plan.
