message 157: by Varla Fiona (new)

Varla Fiona (dory_42) I love reading, spending time outside, especially when I take my labrador to the beach, interacting with animals (I work with reptiles), swimming (in the sea preferably), coffee, crafty type stuff but nothing specific like scrapbooking, playing with my camera (which is not working right now...)

Ashley Rachel Skye wrote: "I love Beverly Hills housewives :)"

I love Real Housewives too--such a guilty pleasure! Watching their petty drama makes me feel so good about myself. (Is that awful?!)

My favorite hobby as of now is my yoga practice. I started a year ago to help me de-stress from school and I just fell in love with it. It is so much more physical than I imagined before I started. I've always been active, but I can tell that yoga has really increased my core and upper body strength! It's so nice to just have an hour or two to clear my mind!

YES! I love yoga! Yoga is one of my favorite things?

Tracy wrote: "Rachel, I'm 52 years old and have osteoarthritis, would I be able to start yoga at this stage of my life?"

Yoga can be done at any age. Yoga is really about you, and your body/mind/soul. There are different "levels" you can do in each position and its up to you on how you push yourself. I encourage anyone to do it because I think it is calming and makes me feel at peace with everything, especially if I had a hard day. So, my answer is yes :)

Ashley Tracy wrote: "Rachel, I'm 52 years old and have osteoarthritis, would I be able to start yoga at this stage of my life?"

Physical activity is highly recommended for patients with OA. I would think yoga would be a great way to increase you physical activity and, in the long run, help to reduce any joint pain you experience.

message 163: by Tracy (new)

Tracy (tjohn33791) First thanks to Rachel for the reply.

Ashley, thanks for the input. For someone with OA and not to mention two herniated discs, I'm more active than most with OA. Either I'm luckier than most or just plain stubborn :-) My big deal is recovery time with most exercises. I'm definitely going to give it a try at least.

That's awesome! Yoga is rather low impact, so I think the recovery time would be minimal other than sore muscles. I'd be wary of any inversions though with your herniated disks. I hope you enjoy it though! I love it! And, like Rachel said, it really does incorporate body, mind, and soul--so you get a bit of spiritual healing as well which is just as important! :)

Jennifer Lafferty Besides reading I'm a visual artist in fact I designed the cover of my book. I also sing and do needlework.

message 170: by [deleted user] (new)

Reading and watching TV mostly, anymore. And then I only watch TV at night with my hubby. And cooking, though I'm hardly a gourmet chef or anything...I just enjoy cooking what I'm able to cook. All the rest of my time goes to my kids, though, so I don't have time to get out and do anything else. Maybe when the kids are older I'll pick something up. :)

message 171: by Megan (new)

Megan (meganmreads) | 44 comments I realize I haven't answered this question, yet!

Obviously, reading is my number 1 hobby. I also blog about books, which goes hand in hand with it.

I do a lot of things with my husband and he is a hobby jumper, as I like to call him.
I looove saltwater fishing down in Tampa Bay, FL. We try to that at least twice a year. We also shoot rifles together at a shooting range, which I love. I shoot a recurve bow, too, and I'm pretty good at it, but I need more practice. And I recently discovered how fun it is to shoot skeet (or pigeons, as some people call them).

I like to draw, mess around with paints, and decorate. I like making collages, too, but I have yet to get into anything serious like scrap-booking. My husband and I recently refinished our bedroom furniture and I had a blast doing it.

I think that's pretty much it at the moment. =)

message 172: by Savanes (new)

Savanes | 39 comments I love dancing, I'm trying to learn to cook (love it but I don't know enough recipies), I'm addicted to TV shows (can't wait for game of thrones season 2) and... wait for it ... reading.

message 173: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (ineedlu) | 16 comments Hobbies.. let's see. I like to draw, and paint. I recently took up oil painting, I used to do mostly acrylics and tempera, some water colors. I haven't painted in awhile, should have a go of it again soon. I spend a great deal of time with my dogs, obedience, walking, training. I watch Cesar Milan religiously. House plants, although in the winter, they do tend to get ignored a little. Whatever makes it thru the winter is welcome to stay around. In the summer, gardening, love to get my hands in the dirt. Reading books, obviously. Just got a nook, it is amazing! Photography is a hobby. Look me up on flickr.com/ineedlu I've got tons of photos, there. My job is tattooing, but definitely spills over into creativity. I'm lucky to have such a creative job. Baking, too. I don't like to cook so much as bake. Cookies, cupcakes, bread. That type of thing.

That is great you speak so many languages! I'm learning Spanish and I am in love with it. That is amazing that you can speak such a diverse group of languages. Kudos!

Savanna | 10 comments I have a large history of painting, with a BFA in Painting, and a mini studio in my attic... however so uninspired recently. I love reading and it is a good distraction and muse for my artistic mind. Looking for a full studio so I can continue painting. In the mean time though I am looking to go back to school for Museum Studies/Art History.
A new hobby of mine is writing. Maybe I will post some tid-bits soon. Buttttt.. this is a new-new hobby, exploring it only for the past month, new. :)

message 191: by Jen (new)

Jen Appell (jenappell) I really love reading (it's basically my whole life) and writing. I paint and draw in my free time, but I love getting involved with activism organizations. In fact, I've started my own chapter of the Harry Potter Alliance at my university. I've been volunteering since I was eight--animal shelters, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, low-income housing development, etc. I'm not a big tv person, but I love fantasy and magic movies.

message 192: by Michelle (new)

recently got into paddle boarding. I love it!

message 195: by Chloe (new)

Chloe (duckduckclo) My main hobbies are reading and writing. This year, I'm making it a point to immerse myself in the literary world. So, I spend a lot of my time reading creative process books, writing drafts, journaling, and finding fellow writing and reading friends. I try hard to keep writing (because it's not always easy!). But I also love nature and hiking, art and photography, and tennis and, somehow, as of late, fitness (I just started boxing!). I'm a HUGE foodie, going out to eat and cooking/baking takes up a lot of my time...and money. I also enjoy going to shows and festivals. From writing this, I'm realizing I have A LOT of interests. Anything that makes me happy (and relaxed), I enjoy!

message 196: by Avery (new)

Avery Delany (redrocketpanda) | 2 comments I'm one of those people who appears to not have many interests and should probably get some more.

My main ones are quite typical; reading, movies, films, gaming (on pc!). Those are the things I spend the majority of my free time doing. I also volunteer, which I love doing, and I'm really into activism and campaigning particularly around 'hard to reach' groups (which is a crappy term I think, but basically incorporates groups like those with disabilities, young parents, LGBTQ, sex workers, etc).

I'd really like to pick up some new hobbies and rekindle some old ones. I used to love writing and also horse riding, but unfortunately haven't been able to write since the age of 15 (as in, I had some crappy experiences which seriously knocked my writers esteem and I've never recovered) and I'm too poor to afford horse riding D:

message 197: by Heather (new)

Heather | 29 comments I love to read, travel (that is how I ended up living in New Zealand), cooking, trying my hardest to get into gardening, going to beach with my boy (just across the street) and spending time with my boys. Actually my boys and their schools take up a lot of my time, only on about 4 committees between the two schools.

message 200: by Gabrielle (new)

Gabrielle (noctaro) | 3 comments I draw! And draw. And draw some more!

I also write (and read, apparently). I've only created poems and essays, although I've always wanted to work on an original novel. I also play the guitar and sing. I cover songs but I just keep them among my files--I don't really have the guts to post them or have anyone listen to them :( Oh, and I absolutely love watching films (horror films, in particular; and, well, chick-flicks (thanks to my chromosomes)).

And as for you guys who cook/bake, I envy youuuu! I want to be able to cook/bake without having to burn anything :(
