A Visit from the Goon Squad
question
I just can't get into it

I'm committed to this book club and reading this book, but I haven't picked it up in weeks. Just need some words of encouragement and an idea of when the book gets "really good".

The characters are self-involved, shallow people, not interesting or likeable, which made it impossible to finish for me. I know there are plenty of people like that, but I don't care much about them.
Look at this way -- each chapter is sort of like a stand-alone story, so if you're not loving the first couple, don't worry, they'll change anyway!
Sorry Im no help! I finished the book but did not like it. It was depressing & I know groups of friends have problems but good grief- I felt like title really fit the whole group
have you tried skipping around...i know most people don't like to do this, but i wonder if it would make the stories more interesting for you, at about chapter 8 i wanted to read the PPT chapter, so i skipped to it and then when back and read 9, 10 and so on to the end. it didn't seem to effect how much i liked it, but kept me interested! good luck, i hate reading books that i can't get into, i did that enough in college!
And I couldn't put it down! When I realized that each chapter stood alone, I just decided to pretend it was a short story collection. Little by little, it all started coming together and seemed simply brilliant.
It's not for everybody. There were chapters I really liked, and others that lost me. Shortly after this, I read The Imperfectionists, which uses a similar structure but felt more cohesive and compelling.
I liked it, but didn't love it. It was a fast read for me - I didn't find anything to savor. Sometimes I think when I go in with high expectations from all the hype, I just can't help but be disappointed.

Since it is over a month later I'm wondering if Carolina finished the book and/or went to the book club. because...
I didn't particularly like reading this book (The Keep was more my style) but did have a rather interesting and spirited discussion in the book group I attended.

Where are you at that it doesn't seem good?
I was hooked after three or four chapters.

No, I'm not liking it either, and I am through the first half of the book. Connecting a big amount of equally "important" characters by some tiny details might work if the plot had any profound deepness, or if each personal story could really touch you on the emotional level, but this book just doesn't deliver. I was particularly disgusted by the instances when a minor character's whole future was delt with in one paragraph - first, their future story wasn't needed at all, second, this technique is just lazy. So far..blah.
I can totally sympathize with you. I had a really hard time getting into it too, and at times I was close to just forgetting it. But it picked up for me at chapter 10. It's probably the only chapter I really liked. I also liked Bennie and Sasha a lot more in the last couple of chapters.
