I have a Gramophone and last night spun a few 78's. The last tune I played was the Charleston.

Shake your money maker by the Black Crowes while cruising up the M6 on the way home from work earlier. It helped enormously.
I was listening to Shoot the Moon by Judie Tzuke. Brings back memories. I have since found out that she is a day younger than me. Bloody kids.

I am listening to Linkin' Park at the moment (The album Living things.)
Earth Vs The Bug "Boa"Man this is heavy and then gives way to finger bells at the end. Chilling.

I've been reading this on the BBC News web site. Someone is giving up music for Lent. Fascinating.http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainme...
Well the NME has just published its latest top 500 albums of all time ...... and so you have to peek at a copy on the shelves at WH Smiths, don't you?
... and you turn to the top five, expecting to see Sgt Pepper as usual.
... but no! The new number 1 of all time is "The Queen is Dead" by the Smiths.
... I've never really got into the Smiths. They sound too much like tuneless whiney depression monkeys with a penchant for murdering flowers.
... so I download "The Queen is Dead" to see what I have been missing and guess what? It still sounds bloody awful.
Is it me? Am I not listening right? How can this possibly be the best album ever made? Or is the NME pulling my whatnot?
I agree with your definition of The Smiths, Will. Music to slit your wrists to.I have tried over the years to get into Joy Division, as I once heard a track I liked. Failed completely and a more inappropriately named band I've never encountered.
Geoff - glad it isn't just me! I've now listened to the album three or four times and still can't see what all the fuss is about.
No, it's not you Will. Whilst I'm not one to listen to uplifting music all the time (Pink floyd or Peter Hammill anyone?) there has to be some focus to the depression (Roger Water's loss of his father and Sid Barrett, and Hammill's relationship breakdown) not just "life is shit" stuff.I'm listening to Meet the Eels by Eels. Quite an interesting alternative rock band, if that covers it. Think of Amy Lee who created Evanescence then inhabited it with musicians to support her, and you have Eels for Mark Oliver Everett. Here is the Wiki if anyone is interested - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eels_%28...
really sad. Beautiful guitar player and wonderful man. Much overlooked. Even named a character in one of my novels after him. But the music lives on as only music does. He will always only ever be triumphant as far as I'm concerned.
We're gonna have a Pentangle night round our's next term. A mate had a Cream night just before the holiday in honour of Jack Bruce.

Hated the Smiths, loved Joy Division
Simon (Highwayman) wrote: "I'm listening to Petula Clark. It's quite a blast from the past."Are you listening to it Downtown, Simon?
Currently listening to the album Godbluff by Van der Graf Generator. Peter Hamill makes Leonard Cohen seem like a hopeless optimist.
Gosh, I had forgotten about Van De Graf Generator. Full album on utube. great stereo separation....https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wmqvg...

I just played "I Put A Spell On You" by Screamin' Jay Hawkins. Still the best version in my opinion.
Listening to The Alchemist by Home. Fabulous album that completely bombed. Simon, explain it to me please.
Listening to the soundtrack of American Beauty. I cannot remember having listened to a Thomas Newman piece I didn't enjoy. He has to be one of the great soundtrack composers.
Oh they really were, Simon. Day at the Races along with A Night at the Opera and sheer Heart Attack are three of my favourite albums.
Simon (Highwayman) wrote: "Listening to a day at the races. Queen were quite something."A Day at The Races would sound like 'Gallop, gallop, gallop, hoorayyy!'
A Night at the Opera would be 4 hours caterwauling and a spatter of polite applause.
Geoff (G. Robbins) (The noisy passionfruit) wrote: "Listening to Close to the Edge by Yes. You can tell Rick Wakeman's keyboard work a mile off."How? If he's a mile away from the rest of the band, that must be a very sensitive microphone!
Marc wrote: "they have to be a mile away due to the width of his flared trousers"And the smell of curry.
Just been listening to Seconds Out by Genesis. One of my favourite songs, Cinema Show, is on there. Here are the lyrics:Home from work our Juliet
Clears her morning meal.
She dabs her skin with pretty smells
Concealing to appeal.
I will make my bed,
she said, but turned to go.
Can she be late for her cinema show?
Romeo locks his basement flat,
And scurries up the stair.
With head held high and floral tie,
A weekend millionaire.
I will make my bed
With her tonight, he cries.
Can he fail armed with his chocolate surprise?
Take a little trip back with father Tiresias,
Listen to the old one speak of all he has lived through.
I have crossed between the poles, for me there's no mystery.
Once a man, like the sea I raged,
Once a woman, like the earth I gave.
But there is in fact more earth than sea.
Take a little trip back with father Tiresias,
Listen to the old one speak of all he has lived through.
I have crossed between the poles, for me there's no mystery.
Once a man, like the sea I raged,
Once a woman, like the earth I gave.
But there is in fact more earth than sea.
As someone was quoted as saying: “That's the kind of song you get when a bunch of classically educated public schoolboys form a rock band.”
Well its more interesting than a lot of the stuff you get these days.Oh look. I've turned into a grumpy old fart!

I hope the grumpy old fart didn't mind.
Mind you, Taylor Swift's last single where she referenced Odysseus' struggle on his return home, was a revelation.
Listening to Highway 61 Revisited this afternoon. Been ages since I listened to any Bob Dylan. Probably because I was more a 70's child than 60's.
Just discovered Taylor Swift. Not my normal listening, but a lot of fun - if a 50 year old bloke can admit to watching videos featuring young ladies in their twenties.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nfWlo...

No, that's Taylor Shift.

Sounds more like a removal firm.
Wan't there one with a similar name that employed chimpanzees to shift pianos and drink tea?
