Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I quite like Curved Air. Dave hasn't played it in a while though.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments One of my favourite albums of theirs is Phantasmagoria, but I admit that it's not to everyone's taste.

I'm listening to Chris Squire's album, Fish Out Of Water now.

I was never a great fan of Elvis Costello, I think it was all the "isn't he wonderful" that did it for me, which I suppose isn't his fault. Nowadays, though, I quite like his greatest hits album.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Patti (Totally Bananas) wrote: "Dave says he's not got Phantasmagoria."

That album was really quite experimental and was my first introduction to the band, apart from Back Street Luv. It's still one of my favourite albums, but quirky, especially the spooky and atmospheric Whose Shoulder are you Looking Over Anyway.

I saw Peter Hamill in concert many years ago. He makes Leonard Cohen seem like a hopeless optimist. For example:

On Tuesdays, she used to do yoga,
while I'd sit and watch the box
in a vegetable way,
but always ready to say
to myself that I was an artist,
implying that she was not.
It's funny the way that self-pity
can take over from self-esteem -
well, I was the prince of pride,
and though I'd cheat I never lied,
as if that were enough to make her happy,
as if that could satisfy her dreams.

Too late now to say that I'm so sorry,
too late to say that I can change and mend
the things that hurt ... she didn't need to worry,
she always knew I'd get there in the end.

Now I'm tying myself up in contortions,
don't know if yoga will do me any good.
It's about time I tried, though I'd rather be inside
from the cold, studying tantra -
still, I never did that when I could.

I never did the things that really mattered,
there seemed to be some key I couldn't find
to unlock myself;
I could have done it with her help,
but I was too busy scrabbling for each moment -
now I don't know what I did with all the time.

Sometimes I'd play the wild rover,
sometimes I'd just get smashed all day...
on Tuesdays she used to do yoga,
on Tuesday she went away

Chris Parker (chrisparker) | 74 comments I've always thought a selection of song lyrics could make a really good poetry book, obviously only good lyrics!
Current favourites, and a bit more upbeat, are the lyrics to 'She' as sung by Charles Asnivor (wrong spelling, I'm sure!) but more recently Elvis Costello in Notting Hill - the other song I listen to by Elvis!
Check out the words if you like poetry...

I've always felt that way about rap lyrics. If I treat them as songs I find them irritating, if I treat them as poetry they are much more palatable.

Chris Parker (chrisparker) | 74 comments If only there weren't issues with copyright (and the fact that I'd be using other people's work exclusively!) I'd look into it more.
I agree it's surprising sometimes how the music will put you off but the lyrics turn out to be genuinely good. I can't get into rap music either, but some of the rhymes are very clever.

I love Five Man Army by Massive Attack - it's about as close to hard-core as I get.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments One of my favourite lyrics currently.

Gabriel, by Smoove and Turrell

Gabriel oh Gabriel when will we see your face again?
Faded beauty velum parchment page.
Oh lead me through my darkest night.
Oh angel wont you hear my plight?
Let your love and sorrow rain on me.

And now I see the embers burn.
How they tend to twist and turn.
How the only light in me is dying out.
As the clouds break out ahead.
Bring light into my dread.
All the angels cry their tears of misery.

Gabriel oh Gabriel when will you free me from my hell?
Words suppressed with awestruck melody.
Oh lead me from my oldest fight oh memories let them all take flight.
Leave me with my distant harmony.

And now I see the embers burn.
How they tend to twist and turn.
How the only light in me is dying out.
As the clouds break out ahead.
Bringing light into my dread.
All the angels cry their tears of misery.

Gabriel oh Gabriel when will we see your face again.
Faded beauty velum parchment page.
Oh lead me through my darkest night.
Oh angel wont you hear my plight.
Let your love and sorrow rain on me.

And now I see the embers burn.
How they tend to twist and turn.
How the only light in me is dying out.
As the clouds break out ahead.
Bringing light into my dread.
All the angels cry their tears of misery.

Chris Parker (chrisparker) | 74 comments Nice, Geoff,
Not heard of that song, will have to look it up.

If there was a collection of lyrics, I'd have to include this one from Pink Floyd. A classic song too.

So, so you think you can tell Heaven from Hell,
blue skies from pain.
Can you tell a green field from a cold steel rail?
A smile from a veil?
Do you think you can tell?

And did they get you to trade your heroes for ghosts?
Hot ashes for trees?
Hot air for a cool breeze?
Cold comfort for change?
And did you exchange a walk on part in the war for a lead role in a cage?

How I wish, how I wish you were here.
We're just two lost souls swimming in a fish bowl, year after year,
Running over the same old ground.
What have you found? The same old fears.
Wish you were here.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Wonderful lyrics Chris. I've always been an admirer of Roger Waters work. One of my favourites is When the Tigers Broke Free, which I believe is autobiographical.

It was just before dawn
One miserable morning in black 'forty four.
When the forward commander
Was told to sit tight
When he asked that his men be withdrawn.
And the Generals gave thanks
As the other ranks held back
The enemy tanks for a while.
And the Anzio bridgehead
Was held for the price
Of a few hundred ordinary lives.

And kind old King George
Sent Mother a note
When he heard that father was gone.
It was, I recall,
In the form of a scroll,
With gold leaf and all.
And I found it one day
In a drawer of old photographs, hidden away.
And my eyes still grow damp to remember
His Majesty signed
With his own rubber stamp.

It was dark all around.
There was frost in the ground
When the tigers broke free.
And no one survived
From the Royal Fusiliers Company Z.
They were all left behind,
Most of them dead,
The rest of them dying.
And that's how the High Command
Took my daddy from me.

The Smoove and Turrell track I heard on Loose Ends on Radio 4 Saturday night, so I suspect its a Christmas release.

Listening to the soundtrack to Blackhawk Down this morning.

Distant Dreamer.....

Although you think I cope
My head is filled with hope of some place other than here
Although you think I smile
Inside and all the while I'm wondering about my destiny

I'm thinking about all the things
I'd like to do in my life
I'm a dreamer, a distant dreamer
Dreaming far away from today

Even when you see me frown my heart won't let me down
Because I know there's better things to come, woah yeah
And when life gets tough and I feel I've had enough
I hold on to a distant star
I'm thinking about, all the things
I'd like to do in my life
I'm a dreamer, a distant dreamer
Dreaming far away from today

I'm a dreamer, a distant dreamer
Dreaming far away from today
Yeah, I'm a dreamer

I'm a dreamer, a distant dreamer
Dreaming far away from today
Yeah, I'm a dreamer
I'm a dreamer
