Hello Janet

Yes, of course you can. We play our iPod through the car audio system. We just let it rip, playing through songs alphabetically. It takes us over a year to get through everything. The amazing thing is how many of the tunes make us say "What is that and where on earth did it come from?"

Incidentally, my wife Gay comes from Darlington.

Forgot to say, it depends how old your car is. Most cars produced in the last few years have a socket for connecting your iPod. If the car is older than that, you will need to get a device which plays the iPod and transmits it into your car radio, after you have selected an empty spot on the dial.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Jay-me (Janet) wrote: "I would like some advice from one of our music geeks. There are a number of ways you can do this Janet. Does your car have a socket for an external source? It's usually on the car radio somethere. Looks like a small headphone socket. Otherwise there may be a socket nearby. You might need a quick look in your manual or do a search on t'internet.

If you haven't then you have three choices:

1. Buy a radio adapter like this one:

Ipod adapter. Once you've got it, tune your car radio to the frequency you've chosen on the adapter and plug it into your chosen audio player.

2. Get a iPod lead fitted in your car. Depending on the car this can cost £150 if done by a main dealer. Probably cheaper if done by a local car audio specialist.

3. Get one of these Dension if you have £300-£500 to spare. This will play ipods, hard drives or just about anything else you throw at it. Again, price depends upon your brand of car. Mine was at the top end because it's all fibre optic not cables.

Option 1 was what I used for some time and also use when I need to hire a car and it doesn't have a socket fitted.

Any other questions, as always, you know where I am.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Right. Thanks for this. I'd like to get a car iPod player thingy for Dave for Christmas. We always use a hire car when we're home, the cheapest tin can car we can get, so of course there is never a socket.
Please tell me what to buy from Amazon. (link please?) The cheapest as it'll only be used a few times a year.
I have a friend who had some sort of adapter thingy that worked in a cassette deck, just slid in like a tape. Is there such a thing that works for cd players?

Ps I've searched for car iPod adapter thingy in the past with no joy. ;)

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Just click on the link for ipod adapter post above, it's already set to a suitable unit for the adapter. The nice thing about that one is that you can tune it right down to 87.5 Mhz, so most of the time it avoids radio stations and other ipod adapters that do not go that low.

It's £3.75 including P&P and a highly rated seller. Bargain.

Jay-me (Janet) | 3784 comments Thanks Vic & Geoff.

I knew Geoff would answer the question. The problem is understanding the answer. As I mentioned music contraptions are not my thing at all. I have taken a PC to pieces and it still worked (when put back together) but knowing the difference between all these contraptions is a totally different thing.

I just want something that I can put my small collection of CDs onto (haven't got round to replacing all the vinyl yet) and play. The car cd/radio does have a socket marked in or something which I assume you can plug something into. I'm not bothered (at this stage anyway) about downloading music just transferring the CDs I have. So what should I get? (Remember I have Yorkshire ancestors & have inherited their dislike of spending)

That's right Patti, but Janet may not know that in order to put music on an iPod, she needs to download (free) iTunes into her computer, feed all her CDs into iTunes, then link the iPod to the computer so that it syncs, or in other words puts all the music onto the iPod before taking it out to the car.

It's not as complicated as it sounds, Janet. Downloading iTunes and installing it in your computer is a doddle. When you want to feed a cd in, you put it in your CD reader on the computer, then after one click you leave it alone for a few minutes. Then another CD. You don't have to put them all in at once. Feed in 10 for your journey, then 5 another day, and so on. Each time, after feeding CDs into iTunes, you just plug your iPod into the computer and leave it to do its work.

If you have an input socket on your car Janet then you don't need the doohicky. You need a plug to plug lead like this:Plug to plug lead I would recommend and iPod Nano. Get the 16Gb version if you can stretch to it as you'll get lots of music on there. The other alternative is do you have a smart phone with a built in MP3 player?

I think my phone is just a phone & not very smart. It isn't often switched on, never mind used, so no need for all singing & dancing.

Sometimes it's cheaper to buy a smart phone than to buy just an MP3 player. If you get one of the old model iPhones then that would suffice.

If you have always liked Kate Bush's music, then you'll love the album. There are two tracks that some consider duffers, that others really like - the duet with Elton John and the song that features Stephen Fry, but, to be honest, they are not that bad, they just seem to jar with the rest of the album.

I've read two reviews in the Telegraph, one gives it 4 stars, the other 5. The 4 star reviewer was up her own rectum in my opinion. Here is the 5 star one:
