What was the last... `Tune` that you played ?
Do you consider that Jazz or World Music Willie?I must admit that I do enjoy quite a bit of African rhythm music. Mind you I also quite enjoy a bit of Mongolian Throat Singing too.
Eclectic in all things, that's me.
Geoff, have a look athttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Youssou_...
I saw him live in Uganda and was blown away.

I described it as `African Jazz` to somebody today, sounded right in my head. Need to find some more by them - it`s really interesting stuff.

To Willie: Have you got any Ali Farka Toure or Thomas Mapfumo? To Patti: Great choice. I've always been a great fan of Alan Parsons. He got my attention when I found out that he was the engineer who worked on Dark Side of the Moon. Also, he often used to use Steve Harley and Colin Blunstone as vocalists.
It never fails to frustrate me how little World music is available in the UK. However, I've now downloaded an iPad app that gives me access to loads of Internet radio stations so, having found some progressive rock stations I'm now on the hunt to more far flung music stations that will allow me to expand my horizons.
I'll have to look into that for my hubby, Geoff. He's very 'into' prog rock. You and he would have a great evening down the pub blathering on about music, I think.
He's suggested you look at Cressida if you haven't yet.
Thanks Geoff. I'll download the app. Hubby sez he knows Home but hasn't got any of their stuff. Yet. Care to wager on if he orders it before bed?
The Alchemist is wonderful, a true concept album. (Old geezer mode on)I bought the LP and the gatefold had drawings for each track. Luckily this is reproduced on the CD, but much smaller :-( (Old Geezer Mode off). The guitar work is brilliant, as are all Home's albums. Here is the wiki - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_(UK...
Geoff
Lippy Kids by Elbow - mind you that's just what Stuart Maconie is playing on the magnificent BBC 6 Music
We've got Richard Thompson playing. The Old Kit Bag.We got a new iPod dock a few days ago. I'm amazed by the sound quality. Recommended in What HiFi, of course.
Still not as good as our proper system, though.

Ah, Richard Thompson - great stuff. Have you heard http://www.amazon.co.uk/Richard-Thomp... - Great album and DVD.
And, of course there is the Richard and Linda Thompson albums.
Ok, need to listen to Beeswing now.
Have hubby's speakers arrived yet?
Not funny mentioning those speakers again. He wants to upgrade the Wharfdales we have now. The STANDS for the pair he wants are over a grand! I've convinced him to hold off for a bit. We've got all of Richard's and Richard and Linda's stuff. Couple of DVDs as well.
Now got John Martyn on. I especially like the songs where he's pissed as a newt. The lyrics are just one big slur...
I feel like I've gone into a time warp and need to rediscover ny penny round collared shirts, scoop necked jumpers, platform soled shoes and grow and never wash my hair - if I still had any. Come on you hippies....did 1976 pass you by completely??
Ian wrote: "I feel like I've gone into a time warp and need to rediscover ny penny round collared shirts, scoop necked jumpers, platform soled shoes and grow and never wash my hair - if I still had any. Come o..."Yep, that's my hubby, Ian. We tease him about his music all the time. He even went so far as to ship his vinyl thousands of miles to keep it close. Can't play it because he can't find a replacement belt for his deck but he has the vinyl in Africa, by golly!
Hey you guys might be the ones to ask about sourcing a belt. I'll ask him specs on his deck when he gets in.
Not even going to comment on the £4000 laptop...
I bought a Toshiba SA355 direct drive turntable back in the late 70's. The platter weighs more than most modern decks. What's that, wow and flutter. dream on. The base is an amalgum of stone and acrylic so almost impossible to pass noise. Solves the belt problem too.Once a geek, always a geek.
Thanks so much, Geoff! I'll have him look at those links. All I know about his is that it's a Thorens that he bought in the late '70s.
Can't help Patti- my vinyl collection went into landfill many years ago following my marriage to a tidiness OCD patient....along with my ancient hippy clothing - sadly some photographic evidence still exists, but musically I'm always moving on
Vinyl into landfill? Sacrilege!Hubby wants to know what you lot think of the Olive?
Oh and if he replaces the belt, it seems he'll also need a new stand and a new phono amp. Grief.
Thorens eh? The man has taste. Hubby wants to know what you lot think of the Olive?
Are we talking the fruit, the cartoon character or the Mount?

My Music tastes are very eclectic... So I will give you the last three tunes I played lol (just to give you all a taste..)
1: A Case of You- Joni Mitchell
2: Nostradamus- Maksim Mrvica
3: Disturbed- Indestructable

I'll have to look a couple of those up Anna. The only other track called Nostradamus is the one by Justin Hayward - very different by the looks of it.Disturbed I've not heard before - will be hunting that one out.
Listening to the Memory of Trees by Enya now.
Now that is eclectic, Anna!Yeah, yeah. I told him I'd need to say more than just Olive or you'd take the Mick.
Seems to be some cd ripping thingy. He's just gone out again. I think there's a write up or advert about it in the latest What HiFi.
Think I'll hand him my iPad when he gets back so he can chat directly. This feels like Chinese whispers.

Nostradamus is by a very talented pianist Maksim Mrvica, its ever so dramatic and powerful!
Disturbed are a totally awesome heavy rock/metal band! i would recomend Listening to "inside the fire" as thats the song that go me hooked!.. (I am a bit of a rocker retro and new)..

Yeah, yeah. I told him I'd need to say more than just Olive or you'd take the Mick. Fell right into that one, didn't I?
Nope, just know the silliness that goes on in here. Which I love!Just put Enya's Watermark on. Lovely.
I bought a hifi magazine at the weekend. It cost me £800 because it had a nice Music Streamer that launches around my birthday....Girls, try to think of mens essentials in terms of how many handbags it costs.
My music streamer = 1 handbag
Geoffs laptop = 6 handbags
A bargain if you ask me.
My last handbag cost £12 & I thought it was too much - they are just containers for important things like kindles & reading glasses & slightly more long lasting than a carrier bag :)
He's just shown me the advert. Olive 03HD Music Server. It plays uncompressed files.Tad expensive, in my opinion.
I must admit to being very tempted by the Sonos system. One in the office, one in the lounge, one on the kitchen and one in our bedroom and one in the daughter's.Could be expensive. My daughter wanted a iPod dock, brought her a Nad amp instead.
We seem to have some hifi experts around. I want Dab, internet radio and NAS streaming. Teac cr-h700 launching in September or Teac reference 600 (looks like it is due to be replaced). What do you think?
I'm using NAS streaming at the moment for both audio and video via Wifi and gigabit Lan. It works very well, except I've had to beef up the Wifi to a Cisco small business unit as the Zyxel's processor gets overloaded.
Good morning, Geoff! I'm still watching the news. :(
Have to switch it off and put some happy tunes on soon.
Moved on to Birds of Prey by Godley and Creme - Reverted to type. I must point out that my iPod is on random album play.We have been looking after a cockatiel and budgie for a friend who is abroad (we have three cockatiels of out own too). Unfortunately when we came downstairs we found the budgie dead in the bottom of the cage. :-(. He was by far the happiest budgie we have ever met and we've had lots over the years.
Bit sad really.
