Patti (baconater) wrote: "Take it off your TBRs completely, Davids."I think if I'm ever tempted (desperate) enough to think of reading it, just reading the synopsis on its GR page will be enough to make me want to go and find some damp paint somewhere that needs careful watching.
Patti (baconater) wrote: "Can't believe Dave let me read it. He told me after I finished that he thought it was shit!"Brave man.
I presume he'll regret it.
Oh, he does.I like this excerpt from one of the reviews.
A book this long needs to be put down frequently: you are at your stop on the subway, it’s time to move a load of laundry from the washer to the dryer, time for a meal or bed. Only once did I put The Goldfinch down with regret that I couldn’t continue reading. Every other time I was relieved. At page 100, 200, and even at page 700 I wasn’t sure I was going to continue reading until the end. This isn't to say the Tartt can't craft a sentence, isn't well-read or a capable researcher, or smart as a whip. She can and is. But in execution this is tied for the most tedious and disappointing reading experience in 2013.
Over the holiday week I finished COFFIN MAKER by Mark L Fowler. I read his thriller recently and looked at what else he'd written. This is totally different but grabbed me from the off.http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
I also read Flare, a post-apocalyptic story. I enjoy these - they make my life seem ordered! I enjoyed the story here but I wanted a big red pen. Oh, the punctuation!https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

I've read a fair few books like that over the years and regretting the time I've spent reading them. Usually writing by people who've been on creative writing courses, who know all about how to write fine sentences and how to use metaphor, allusion, symbolism and all that, but in the end do not have anything worth reading.

Blott on the LandscapeWhen the series was on - I didn't watch it - can't remember why....... now I want to and will have to buy it. I've searched the titles for my Fire Stick and it doesn't look like it's available for streaming this way

I have it on BBC DVD.
Finally finished An American Killing which I think I only finished because it was for a challenge. Paperback will be Dead Souls not sure about kindle book
Yesterday I finished THE MAN UPSTAIRS by Mark Fowler, a recently discovered author. A great spoof detective story with a really unusual premise.http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
Just started another good book - The Patient Killer by Sean and Daniel Campbell.
I finished Basil, it's not one of Collin's best books the start is pretty slow and I almost gave it up but then it hit an exciting bit and after that it was okay. I wouldn't recommend it and I'm fan of Wilkie Collins (the only reason I persevered with it).Now I'm reading A Slow Death by Quicksilver by our Lexi Conynham which is just out today and not yet on Goodreads!
Just finished Black Cherry Blues
which was, of course excellent, although possibly not up to his highest standard.Just started
Living Death, the 7th Katie Maguire book in what has been a great series so far. I bought this yesterday for 99p and started it as soon as I'd finished the Burke one, even though I usually like to let books mature in my unread folder for a year or two before I get around to them.
I enjoyed that, Desley. Just finished The Patient Killer by Sean and Daniel Campbell. Enjoyed it a lot. Not on my blog yet - though it will be - as I'm getting an error from Am dot com and can't put up a link to there. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I gave up on the Tom Holt I was reading. It was painfully unfunny.I'm now reading a collection of mystery short stories by various authors.
Been ages since I read any short stories. I do enjoy them, when they're done well.

Speaking of short stories, any further development with the collection for children?
Numbers 2 and 4 in the same cosy crime series by Rebecca Tope - A Cotswold Ordeal
and A Cotswold Mystery
.
A grand little novella with a supernatural theme - from Nigel Bird who always writes something worth reading. Drawn In: The Art Collectorhttp://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...

Looks interesting - bought.
I've posted my review for Peter F. Hamilton's The Dreaming Void - I had some issues with it, but in the end I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy!

After struggling to settle into a book, I started Divergent and I'm thoroughly enjoying it.I really wish I hadn't watched the film first but the book is better than the film, of course.
I can see why it's so popular.
Finished Remix a nice easy to read whodunit, I'm going to give it 3 * as I wouldn't read it again, although I'd read more of the authors
Just finished Living Death
, another excellent Katie Maguire book.Just started
The Third Rule, looking very good.

Just finished
The Illegal Gardener by Sara Alexi and I gave it 5*. Really enjoyed, didn't want to put down. Although the blurb says this story is set in Pakistan - it isn't, it's set in Greece and that is where I am holidaying at the moment, so extra enjoyment of beautiful views from my Greek balcony whilst reading it!Just started
Out of Time by Loretta Livingstone
Flo, I'm currently reading The Thread by Victoria Hislop which is set in Thesaloniki. It ranges (via an old couple's life stories told to their grandson) from the first war to the present. Amazingly interesting. Don't know if that would appeal?

I read "The Island", whilst I was here several years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks Kath x
I've just finished The Long Utopia, and despite its flaws I enjoyed reading it, and I'm looking forward to the release of the next book:

Just finished Holier Than Thou, and just started Ambassador 1: Seeing Red. On a bit of an indie trip, lately :)
Nothing wrong with indie trips!I've just reviewed Slow Death by Quicksilver, the latest of Lexie Conyngham's excellent series of historical crime books. The stories themselves are good and well-crafted but it's the characters and the gentle, laid-back humour that I value them for.

It was, as usual, excellent! Come on, Jud, keep up!Edit - I've just seen my Goodreads daily update and I see Jud's already rated it!
Yes, I finished it yesterday morning!LOVED IT. Some of the Ulster phrasing was spot on which made me chuckle, it was so familiar.
I'm now on to The Passage
Finished a collection of Bukowski short stories and now reading John Le Carre's The Tailor of Panama
