I think if I'm ever tempted (desperate) enough to think of reading it, just reading the synopsis on its GR page will be enough to make me want to go and find some damp paint somewhere that needs careful watching.

Brave man.
I presume he'll regret it.

I like this excerpt from one of the reviews.
A book this long needs to be put down frequently: you are at your stop on the subway, it’s time to move a load of laundry from the washer to the dryer, time for a meal or bed. Only once did I put The Goldfinch down with regret that I couldn’t continue reading. Every other time I was relieved. At page 100, 200, and even at page 700 I wasn’t sure I was going to continue reading until the end. This isn't to say the Tartt can't craft a sentence, isn't well-read or a capable researcher, or smart as a whip. She can and is. But in execution this is tied for the most tedious and disappointing reading experience in 2013.

Currently Reading:-

I've just been playing the BBC DVDs of Blott. Hilarious, and very close to the book. A Malcolm Bradbury adaptation.

I've read a fair few books like that over the years and regretting the time I've spent reading them. Usually writing by people who've been on creative writing courses, who know all about how to write fine sentences and how to use metaphor, allusion, symbolism and all that, but in the end do not have anything worth reading.

When the series was on - I didn't watch it - can't remember why....... now I want to and will have to buy it. I've searched the titles for my Fire Stick and it doesn't look like it's available for streaming this way

I'm now reading a collection of mystery short stories by various authors.
Been ages since I read any short stories. I do enjoy them, when they're done well.

Pop them down to Cardiff for me then!!

Looks interesting - bought.

I've posted my review for Peter F. Hamilton's The Dreaming Void - I had some issues with it, but in the end I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the trilogy!

I really wish I hadn't watched the film first but the book is better than the film, of course.
I can see why it's so popular.

I enjoyed The Third Rule.

It would definitely appeal. I read "The Island", whilst I was here several years ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Thanks Kath x

I've just finished The Long Utopia, and despite its flaws I enjoyed reading it, and I'm looking forward to the release of the next book:

I've just reviewed Slow Death by Quicksilver, the latest of Lexie Conyngham's excellent series of historical crime books. The stories themselves are good and well-crafted but it's the characters and the gentle, laid-back humour that I value them for.

Edit - I've just seen my Goodreads daily update and I see Jud's already rated it!

LOVED IT. Some of the Ulster phrasing was spot on which made me chuckle, it was so familiar.
I'm now on to The Passage
