Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished The Tender Herb: A Murder in Mughal India by Lexie Conyngham.

http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...

Another corker and I can't wait for the next. If you read this, you'll see why.

Almost finished Canvey Island by James Runcie - I first came across him through a book group read and he's a very fine writer indeed.

This evening I should be starting Mary Fitzgerald's What Tomorrow Brings - which isn't linked on here yet.

Steven | 173 comments just finished The paying Guests the new Sarah Waters nolel. really enjoyed this one a great story well written.
Now reading An Officer And A Spy by Robert Harris which is very good so far, about a period of French history I knew nothing about.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12600 comments Finished Plunder by Pilgrims, glad it was free as it was only 27% of the book. Not sure what I'm reading next

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Dark Hall Press Cosmic Horror Anthology by Darin Kennedy

I've just finished reading the Dark Hall Press Cosmic Horror Anthology and it's a decent collection Lovecraftian style stories:

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...

I'm now onto Drabbles 'N' Shorts by Rick Haynes - it's a fine mix of stories so far.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Drabbles 'N' Shorts by Rick Haynes

I've just finished reading Drabbles 'N' Shorts by Rick Haynes and it's a fine collection of drabbles and short fiction. Worth buying for Alfred the Great on its own!

http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...

I'm now onto Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman - it has been too many years since I last read this!

Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman

David Hadley Just finished Crash, which turned out to be an excellent story with a great twist.

BUT:

The story ends at 75% on the Kindle.
A good chunk of that 25% of back matter is taken up with the starting chapters of another novel.

Both of these things are things that I - and many of you - find annoying, turning what would have been a 4 or even 5 star book for me into a 3 star book.

Just started Red Light, which is the third in the so-far excellent - and bloody - Katie Maguire series.

message 7518: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Make sure you mention that if you review. :)

message 7519: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) I hate padding at the end as well. A brief mention is fine but a quarter of the book length is crazy.

David Hadley Kath wrote: "Make sure you mention that if you review. :)"

I did and I did.

David Hadley Michael wrote: "I hate padding at the end as well. A brief mention is fine but a quarter of the book length is crazy."

What is annoying is that there is a great twist in the story and you are expecting something else to happen with 25% of the book to go... and then it is over.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished Canvey Island by James Runcie. I read his East Fortune for our book group and although I marginally preferred that, this is a good read. He's excellent at drawing characters who you can like initially then go off - and vice versa.

message 7523: by Rosen (new)

Rosen Trevithick (rosentrevithick) | 2272 comments I just finished My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece by Annabel Pitcher. I recommend it for anybody who liked The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time and The Lovely Bones.

message 7524: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I loved The Curious Incident - Hated Lovely Bones!

message 7525: by Rosen (new)

Rosen Trevithick (rosentrevithick) | 2272 comments Ooh! I dunno what to suggest then. This one is devoid of ghosts - if that helps.

message 7526: by Steven (new)

Steven | 173 comments just finished An Officer and A spy by Robert Harris which was excellent. a real case of truth sometimes being more shocking than fiction. great insight in to a period of history I knew nothing about.
Now reading Because She Loves me the new book by Mark Edwards.

message 7527: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished Red Light which is very good indeed (3rd book in a very good series) - not for the squeamish, though.

Just started The Heroes.

message 7528: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I'm currently reading - in fact, not far from the end of - What Tomorrow Brings by Mary Fitzgerald. Stonking book set at the time of the Spanish Civil War and the start of the Second World War. Not all fighting - it's the story of a trainee journalist and what she sees and becomes involved in.

message 7529: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Just finished Candide by Voltaire, 1759 French satire. It was good fun.

Just started The Postman Always Rings Twice by James M. Cain.

message 7530: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished Mary Fitzgerald's book What Tomorrow Brings which was excellent. Even the big publishing houses don't catch all the typos though! Really well worth a read.

Just started The Mountain and the Flood by Sheila Perry. It was written some years ago and postulates an independent Scotland. Strangely topical!

message 7532: by Steven (new)

Steven | 173 comments just Finished because she loves me by Mark edwards. a really enjoyable psychological thriller with a good twist at the end.
now reading The Monogram Murders the new poiret novel by Sophie Hannah which came out today.

message 7533: by Guy (new)

Guy Portman (guyportman) Kath wrote: "Just finished Mary Fitzgerald's book What Tomorrow Brings which was excellent. Even the big publishing houses don't catch all the typos though! Really well worth a read.

Just star..."

You are a real expert at catching those typos Kath. One suspects that even books released from the big publishing houses don't go through the rigorous checks they once did.

message 7534: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I'd always assumed they had several pairs of eyes over them. I know that when I and a couple of others beta read for people, we all catch different things. You each have certain things that leap out at you. If they just give it a single edit it's not going to catch everything. It's a shame because lots of indies would love to have a publisher - this was Arrow books, part of Random House - and yet you're possibly not getting as good a deal as you think.

message 7535: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments I've probably said before that someone I know who wrote a history relating to Buddhism found that his professional editor at a well-known publishing house changed all the ADs and BCs around, leaving the Buddha living backwards!

message 7536: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Neat trick, if you can do it! ;)

message 7542: by Adele (new)

Adele (adelemitch) Just finished The Scorch Trials and went immediately onto The Death Cure, an excellent ending to the trilogy.

Not starting anything new until I have finished at least two of the four books currently on the go

message 7543: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Has anyone put The Martian in our best books thread?

I hope so. Cuz I'm too lazy.

Bought a book today on the reccie of a ten year old and am gonna start it in a few minutes. I'm hoping it's a good'un.

Wonder

message 7544: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished The Mountain and the Flood which is excellent. An independent Scotland, twenty - five years down the line, battered by climate change. Funny and thought provoking.

message 7545: by Steven (new)

Steven | 173 comments I've put the new poirot novel to one side and started Edge Of eternity by Ken Follett. it's the last book in his Century Trilogy and wasn't due out until next Tuesday! was delighted to wake up today therefore with it on my kindle! not sure if amazon made a mistake or if they just took pity on people like me who've been waiting impatiently for it to come out! it's 17000 locations so I may be gone some time.

message 7546: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan Hill | 1599 comments Currently reading Before I Go To Sleep

message 7547: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Didn't know there was a new Poirot out so will have to go shopping! I've abandoned a couple of books recently that didn't grab me, but am now reading The Woman Who Walked Into the Sea and so far I'm really enjoying it. The writing is excellent.
