I think you've got it, KD. Anne Rice was definitely a gateway author, and her stuff led to this Twilight crap.I prescribe 25 pages of Salem's Lot, and maybe some liquid sedatives.
I know why you guys hate this stuff - it's all sexy GUY vampires. Where are the sexy girl vampires? They could be dangerous, monster-y vampires, and still be sexy.I sense a real opportunity for some author out there.
I thought vampires have always represented sex. Sex and danger. You know, all those repressed Victorians, letting themselves be seduced by the mesmerizing powers of vampires. Biting, and sucking, and penetrating...oh, my!
But they usually DID look sexy. Lugosi, Lee, Langella, Sarandon, Pitt, Cruise, Oldman, all pretty darn sexy. Really, they don't use the revenant, ratty looking vampires that often in movies.Of course, the women vampires are even sexier. Brides of Dracula, anyone?
I think that was what KD was saying... they are not supposed to look sexy... But I didn't mind the ones in Van Helsing (sp) even thought the movie itself was horrid.
Yeah, Van Helsing was awful, wasn't it, Nick. Too bad!And I do understand King's point, that the vampires in romance books lately aren't very dangerous, and they should be. They're just bad boys anymore, with dark auras, and a mystique for all the girls to go ga-ga over.
KD, it's just a phase. Ignore it the best you can, it'll be over in a year or two.
