Kaitlin Hey everyone! I just recently got into manga and I have to say... I'M OBSESSED!

So far my favourite is 'Ouran High School Host Club', so if anyone had any recommendation, I'm all ears! <3

Doc (docpersona) | 233 comments Greetings to our newest Manga Maniacs. :)

I am always suggesting Black butler to folks. It has great artwork, interesting plots(most of the time), and very interesting characters set in jolly old England.

Recently Sailor Moon finished reprinting with 12 volumes that can be purchased in packs of 1-6 and 7-12 off of Amazon and probably other places. :)

Also Not sure if it was mentioned yet but in September Kodanasha is releasing the New Sailor Moon Short stories. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/17...

Oh boy, you don't know what you got yourself into with recommendations! Hahaha!! Here are a couple of my favorites:

Saiyuki
Black Bird
Fruits Basket
Alice in the Country of Hearts
Dengeki Daisy
Black Butler
Othello
Maid Sama (unfinished in book format in the US though unfortunately because it was published by TokyoPop)

And some that I really enjoyed!
Boys over Flowers
Honey and Clover
Blue Exorcist
Pandora Hearts
Chobits
Paradise Kiss
Model
Negima!
Future Diary (similar to Death Note but not as annoying)
Ranma 1/2 (unfortunately, for me at least, this series is so long so a lot of times I was bored with the volumes because I felt like they were just milking it for all it was worth to make it so long. But it's very funny and silly!)
Kimi ni Todoke (also very long and at times feels boring but otherwise pretty good!)

Well I'll leave it at that now, I could add lots more. There are two that I've only read the first volume for but I plan to read the rest of the available volumes very soon. I absolutely loved the first volumes so you could check those out too! And they are:

Jack Frost
March Story
Until Death Do Us Part (currently only two volumes available for this series cuz they just started publishing it in English)

I hope you find something you enjoy from this list ^_^

So many new people! It's also nice to see people sharing my obsession with shoujo as well.

I love recommending Skip Beat! and SA. But there are so many goodies out there! You can check out the Suggested Manga a Day thread for about 1/2 a year's worth of featured series. I got a little lazy towards the end of the first year, and didn't quite pick that ball back up yet. There are also Pick-a-Manga threads and Suggestion threads in various genres for other suggestions too.

I can't wait to see everyone around the group!

message 158: by Amber (new)

Amber (sephranix) Hi all,

My name is Amber, and I have been reading manga for about 10-11 years now. Back when I first started, it was difficult to find good scanlations online, so I was limited by what my parents would buy for me at the bookstore 45 minutes away.

All in all, I've read a good mix of shoujo, shounen, josei, and yaoi. If I had to pick a favorite series, I'd be hard pressed to pick between Fruits Basket, Hana-Kimi, Usagi Drop, and Ouran. Or Saiyuki because that was the first manga I ever read.

I'm always looking for something new to read, so I'm excited to see what you all have to recommend!

message 159: by Cozen (new)

Cozen Omari Sister's are one of the better scanalation groups. You can compare Akagami no Shirayukihime from down loading it directly from their sight, and the manga that is available anywhere else on the web. Their translations, from what I have seen, are spot on, and they don't get the raws from that cheap quick newspaper thin quality (can't remember what it is called). They mostly get theres from the vol. themselves. Quality is always better with them. I am not sure if there is another group equally good. I won't say any one of my groups are, because I am too critical of my talents to know that there is still much to learn in cleaning a raw. I can always improve even after 2 years and still going. The Zero Alliance group and Lively Scans do have ties to Omari's Sister through joints. Bsxmanga, don't know what is going on with her. She's in college but hasn't been in touch recently. Except for a few titles she does mostly summaries. I happen to be cleaning and proofing L-DK and gave her the chapter 40 a few months ago. So unless it's a translator... I just don't know

Clara (claramittens) | 2 comments Hello. I'm Gerry. Been reading manga for about 13 years now. I don't remember what the first one I read was. Maybe Ranma 1/2? Yeah that sounds about right.

My favorite manga is either Great Teacher Onizuka or Pluto, and my favorite manga artist is either Hiromu Arakawa or Naoki Urasawa

I buy all of my manga and if you support scanlation sites, we probably can't be friends.

It is nice seeing and meeting people who enjoy purchasing books. They are always better in a hardcopy.

message 165: by Doc (new)

Doc (docpersona) | 233 comments Speaking of hard copy look what I found on Amazon. I never realized Tokyopop did hard cover books. :) It is just a shame after hearing about how cool the hard cover copy of "Vinland Saga" was going to be that suddenly there is no availability to it.

I don't really have a genre that I prefer since I read whichever I find interesting which even include shonenAi/yaoi and shoujo ai/yuri. My current favorites are Shingeki no Kyojin, Yamada-Kun To 7-Nin no Majo and Watashi Ni Xx Shinasai. But my all time favorites are Ranma 1/2 and Slam Dunk cause they are really funny.

Haha I'm happy to tell you! There are a lot of discussion threads you can join, but we also do monthly events. We do a Book of the Month manga read where we vote on what we want to read. Usually there is a discussion thread for what we're reading to share thoughts. We also do this with anime in our new Anime Watch series. Those run for two months and then on the third month we do a movie night. Also, there are lots of different reading challenges you can partake in, as well as a variety of polls to take. It's pretty fun! I've enjoyed being a part of this group so much that recently I became one if the mods. So I hope you enjoy our events and discussions!

Amber (undeadangel) | 46 comments I forgot to introduce myself when I joined the group, so here goes - My name is Amber, I'm almost 34, and I've been reading manga for about 16-17 years now. Yes, that's a long time, I started reading when Sailor Moon first appeared in the US in MixxZine along with a bunch of other different comics such as Magic Knight Rayearth. I actually miss that magazine! I still have copies of it somewhere.

Right now I am following the Alice in the Country of Hearts/Clover/Joker/Diamonds/etc, Say "I Love You", Happy Marriage?!, Vampire Knight, Blue Exorcist, and Black Butler. I'd follow more if my budget would allow, but I am also pretty particular about the types of stories that I like to read. :)

I am really big on Anime, probably more-so than manga, but I only recently started reading manga again more regularly so both habits are pretty intense now!

Welcome Amber! I LOVED Alice in the Country of Hearts!

Does your local library carry any manga? That is where I get 99% of the manga I read. I'm lucky cuz I live in a big metro area so we have lots of huge libraries with great selections. But it has saved me hundreds of dollars because I read roughly between 100 - 150 mangas a year (sometimes more) and they almost all come from the library!

They do, but unfortunately they don't carry a very big selection. I just try to keep the series I read to a minimum so I'm not overspending and when I find a good job then I can go back and read the ones I didn't get around to reading. Until then I satisfy myself with anime and sometimes I will sit in a bookstore and read manga or read it online.

Also, playing Otome video games can scratch the itch very well!

Hi there Amber. I am not much older then you and I know of the temptations of over spending so I try to limit myself to 20 to 30 bucks worth every two weeks (when I get payed) I like to visit the local independent bookstore to try to support them but I can only so so much.:)

The most recent books I acquired were Magi volume 6 and Inu X Boku SS volume 1 which I hope to have time to review on this sight soon. At present the books I am most excited to get in July will be Black Butler 17 and the newest Maximum Ride which I am ordering on the 28th. Best wishes on getting more of your favorite titles. :)

Hi everyone!!! I'm avoiding sleep, since that is smart before a big conference call. Haha!

Anyway-
I own hundreds of manga before I took full advantage of the library. Well, I also moved and where I am now has a pretty awesome inter-loaning system. So all of them minus like 4 have been from the library. Well, that is the ones that aren't published. That's online. Or harlequin. But let's face it, I should have taken advantage of those sales when I saw them when I had the chance. They're gold I say, gold! haha!

Anyway- It's so nice seeing someone else loving Clover. Soooo good! Extremely detailed. But I love lots of CLAMP's stuff, so that shouldn't be a surprise.

Anywho- I hope to see everyone around!
