Jen, I just had my coffee outside on the patio with some reading. (Finalizing the edits on my own novel.) Gotta love the fresh air.

Tracy I've been reading the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin. I've made it through the third book. These books are huge. Each one has around 1,100 pages in it. They are fantasy books and are probably more for guys. They are full of sword fights and people are constantly dying. We went from one King to five and things are not getting less chaotic the further I read. They are interesting but the books are just so long that I find myself just wishing the book would be over because I'm tired of never being able to finish. I have pulled several top 100 book lists online for Sci Fi and Fantasy type books and compiled a list of 100 books from those. These were second on the list so that is why I'm reading them. I don't regret reading them it is just killing my goal on Goodreads for the number of books I'm trying to read this year.

I can understand the appeal. (Have I mentioned I am excited about the new season of Game of Thrones?) Good for you for making your way through your reading goal. I tend to plow through a book once I've started it, but I dread that feeling of wishing it was over.

Jessica | 6 comments I just finished If Jack's in Love by Stephen Wetta and I liked it quite a bit--it was the first book in a while that I felt like reading every night (didn't have to force myself). It's contemporary and Wetta's first book, but it's kind of old-school--the subject material (a kid in the 60s) and the writing style.

Colleen I am reading The House of Velvet and Glass by Katherine Howe. It's ok but I haven't read much yet and I read somewhere the first 90 pager or so are slow and then it picks up.I hope so because I was really looking forward to reading this novel.

Eaf (eahf) | 1 comments Hello!! I am new here too. I'm part of a local women's book club that meets once a month and was started 6 months ago. I love it. The best book I have read this year is Sarah's Key (Tatiana De Rosnay). I never would have chosen that book on my own. I'm so glad my local book club chose it. I recently finished Blood Orchid (Toby Neal). It was so-so; wouldn't highly recommend it. I'm currently reading The Weird Sisters (Eleanor Brown). I'm about 30% in, and can't say that thus far it lives up to all the good reviews I read. I look forward to checking back in here and seeing what everyone has to say!

Welcome to our group! I added Sarah's Key to our group bookshelf so we can see how other Smart Chicks have rated the book--and more of us might be inspired to pick it up.

Lori, I may not be the best person to ask in the light and happy department, but here are a few we have read as a group you might take a look at. If you click on each book in the group bookshelf you can see what other Smart Chicks thought, and you can also go through our Group Reads discussion folders.

Before Ever After
The Last Letter from Your Lover

Two more from my personal bookshelf:

Practical Magic
My Life in Paris

Also, I hope you will add your thoughts on The Dovekeepers to our group discussion this month.

I loved Poison Study by Maria Snyder. It is a trilogy so the next two are Magic Study and Fire Study.

I loved Let's Pretend This Never Happened by Jenny Lawson (aka The Bloggess). Rip-roaringly funny. Also loved Before Ever After which someone else suggested.

Hi Linda, welcome to the group! I read The Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet too. I really liked it because it talked about a time in our country's history that I really knew little to nothing about. It is hard to imagine our country rounding up a subset of our population into camps but we've done it. I hope this doesn't happen in the future.

message 73: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I am currently reading A Matter of Magic by Patricia C. Wrede. This is really two books that they have now taken and thrown together into one book. I just finished the first book. It was ok but not great. I think the second half will be a lot better though. The first half every character in the book was looking for some missing magical pieces so you eventually kind of feel like, ok, enough of this, who cares where the real platter is:)

Welcome, Denise. Based on your bookshelf I might recommend: Girl in Translation (emotionally wrought Asian American perspective), A Discovery of Witches (fun paranormal read)or Her Fearful Symmetry (smart paranormal read).

You can also go through our past group reads to hear what our members thought of different books we have read together. The group bookshelf is also a good resource. We are in the middle of a chunkster for the holidays (IQ84) but we will get back to one book per month in January.

Happy Reading.

message 78: by Colleen (new)

Colleen I just finished The Time Keeperand I really liked it

message 79: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I just finished Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl. It wasn't the most exciting read since the family was in hiding for 2 years with 4 other people, but it was interesting to see how Anne matured and grew during their time in hiding. I wish her life could have turned out differently. It was very sad that only one of the eight survived their ordeals after capture.

message 80: by Denise (new)

Denise Dowden | 12 comments Thanks for the suggestions Tina! I'm adding those to my list. I just finished Autumn Violets by Nuala Reailly (kindle version) and apart from the many grammatical errors and typos, it was a good holiday read.

It was so good I walked away feeling humbled as a writer.

For anyone looking for a fast moving plot though, this is not the book for that.

I just read that one and I really liked it. The characters are all really flawed and they can make you angry sometimes but it is a very good book. Have you read Garden Spells? It is really along the same lines with the flowers and was a fun book.

message 91: by Tracy (new)

Tracy Now I'm reading Never Let Me Go and I'm not really liking it. The book reminds me of Unwind which I liked better. This one is kind of slow and he recounts old stories to tell you the story and it is kind of dull.

message 92: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I did read Cinder before this last book and that one was very entertaining. It loosely follows along with the Cinderella storyline but Cinder is a cyborg. There is some mystery, romance and threats of war. Really good book. I can't wait to read the next one in the series.

message 93: by Jasmine (new)

Jasmine | 36 comments I just finished Snobs by Julian Fellowes and really enjoyed. This Downton Abbey writer and director really gave you a wonderful view into different groups of people - from royalty to bad actors - but more importantly into the heart of human nature. Set in the 1990s, it was a very enjoyable read and one I feel that may stay with me for quite a while.

Colleen Here is a few novels I have finished recently
The Death of Bees I loved it but alot of other people didn't .
This one has been around and I finally read it The Shadow of the Wind AND I loved it.
This one is an OPRAH pick and I didn't like it at allThe Twelve Tribes of Hattie

message 95: by Tracy (new)

Tracy I just finished Dune and I liked it but didn't love it which I thought was weird because it seems to be THE BOOK that all science fiction lovers love. He introduced a lot of new concepts and didn't really explain anything. You just had to go with it for several chapters before you might piece together what he's talking about. That was irritating. Several of the main characters died which was annoying. I didn't really love any of the characters. I'll read the rest of the series because that's what I do but I think it might be a bit of a slog to get through them.

Beverly Diehl (writerbeverly) Tracy wrote: "I just finished Dune and I liked it but didn't love it which I thought was weird because it seems to be THE BOOK that all science fiction lovers love. " I like sci-fi and fantasy and enjoyed Dune, read the next 3-4, but then bailed on however many are next.

Intriguing concepts, SOME interesting characters, but for me, a like rather than a love.
