The Dogs Of Rome is what I'm reading now, after a not so satisfying crime book also set in Rome, Kosto ikuisessa kaupungissa (not available in English). So far loving it.

Oh, a long pause here while so many other books, authors, and new reads (especially that) have come around for many (I hope).

Not quite about to start a new thread for it, but
Jo Nesbø's The Bat is on christmas special in US, just saw it on Nesbø's FB feed.

$2.99 for the ebook (kindle, ibook, nook), until the 26th, links on his FB linky. That's the first Harry Hole book, so the perfect place to start that series.

Ooh, I need to try that. :)
I'm enjoying La condanna del sangue - La primavera del commissario Ricciardi - well the translated version as I got it from the library, "Blood Curse". I'm enjoying it - but it'll be so much better in original, so I think I'll need to suggests the library to get the originals of the series too.

Walter (walters) Just finished reading The Good Luck of Right Now. Excellent read with flawed characters. Heart warming tale of damaged people. Great read.

message 668: by Barine (new)

Barine Sambaris | 6 comments Currently reading The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. It's as intriguing and detailed as the first Robert Langdon series, Angels and Demons, only this uses history and art rather than science like the first one to counter the catholic church.

message 669: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I've been on a Reginald Hill jag. I love Dalziel & Pascoe (and Wield and Ellie and Rosie). I'm reading Death's Jest-Book

I only read the first two books in the series, can't wait to read the other two...glad to see you're enjoying it :)

I just finished Sun Storm by Åsa Larsson, the first book in the Rebecka Martinsson series and now I have yet another series that I'm getting hooked on :)

Always nice to find a good series to get hooked on :)

I think I'm similarly getting hooked on Inspector O from North Korea, in Hidden Moon.

Olivia Turner | 3 comments Next of Sin by Lisa Gordon
Next of Sin

Lisa has either travelled widely, or really knows how to use Google Earth. No matter, the descriptions of the many international venues (Japan, Warwickshire and Niarobi) come across vividly, and you feel yourself transported to each of them.

Recommended to anyone who enjoys a thriller, but who also values strong female characters and powerful real life themes.

Ken Fredette (klfredette) Reading "Hunting Season" by Andrea Camilleri it's a small book only 150 pages, but with the wit of Camilleri.

message 684: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Oakes (quinnsmom) I've just started Mapuche, by Caryl Ferey. So far it's quite good.

message 685: by Adam (new)

Adam Moss | 5 comments Anyone else here read any George Simenon?

I've just finished 'The Engagement'. Not a thriller, per se, more a story that occurs around a murder in 1930s Paris.

It is absolutely brilliant. I mean...more than that. A classic in every sense.

Political and moral commentary, human observation, exposure of mankind's frailties - its all there hidden under the paper-thin veneer of a murderous tale.

If you've not read any of Simenon's roman durs (hard novels) - not his lighter Inspector Maigret stuff - you really should. The Engagement is a great place to start and, at just 130 pages, will not tax your reading time too much.

I haven't read them, but I own most of his non-Maigret novels. Thanks for reminding me!

message 687: by Adam (new)

Adam Moss | 5 comments Nancy...I read The Engagement in one go yesterday. And I've not been able to stop thinking about the protagonist in it, the wonderfully-drawn Mr Hire, since. It has been a very long time since a book affected me in that way. I can't recommend it enough. Bleak, black and beautiful. It helps if, like me, you swoon at the mere mention of Paris.

I'm taking it out of the French crime shelf now and moving it to this month's tbr pile. Maybe I'll even get to it in the next two weeks!

message 689: by Adam (new)

Adam Moss | 5 comments You have a French crime shelf? Ha ha. Brilliant.

I'm currently immersing myself in the joy that is Italian noir. Some truly brilliant writers among the current, and somewhat more established, crop.

I love the lightness of Andrea Camilleri in particular.

I have a crime shelf for every country, believe it or not. I love Camilleri, but if you want quality Italian crime, try Leonardo Sciascia. I can also recommend Giorgio Scerbanenco, Carofiglio, and Antonio Tabucchi's "The Missing Head of Damasceno Monteiro."

message 691: by Adam (new)

Adam Moss | 5 comments Thanks for the heads up on those authors. I will definitely check them all out.

message 692: by [deleted user] (new)

I've just finished Ghost Girl by Lesley Thomson, which is much improved over the first, The Detective's Daughter and am now moving onto James Henry's Fatal Frost the second in his Jack Frost prequel series.

Adam Moss | 5 comments So...talk to me about Andrea Camilleri. I've read 'The Potter's Field' and I'm currently reading 'The Shape of Water'. Love them both. Which of his other books should I be looking out for? I have 'The Terracotta Dog' on my bookshelf...but there are so many. Which should I choose?

I'm a series purist so I like to start at the beginning of each series, but I really liked August Heat.

Almost finished this spy thriller. Initially I thought it would be in the Vince Flynn category but actually it's one part Brad Thor and another part John Le Carre with a small dash of Ludlum.

Now reading Lies of Silence by Brian Moore:
Lies Of Silence by Brian Moore
One of Graham Greene's favourites - "Each book of his is dangerous, unpredictable, and amusing. He treats the novel as a trainer treats a wild beast."
