Rezikiel | 15 comments In this children's book, the child hero (a girl I think, but I'm not sure) sets off on a journey to conquer a giant/ogre/something-or-other. She packs a bag with things that are not clear to come in handy (given to her?) such as a small jar of dirt and maybe a spoon and something else... Water? When she meets the ogre (or whatever), there is a series of seemingly impossible challenges. For instance, "you can't stand with one foot on your own soil and one on mine." But while he reaches with one foot over the mountains, she cleverly pours out the earth from the jar and puts one foot on it while standing with the other on his soil. And so on. She wins, of course.

Rezikiel | 15 comments Hi Monica. Thanks for the ideas. I looked into it and no, unfortunately neither book is the one. The search continues...

Deborah | 179 comments How old are the characters? Is it along the lines of East of the Sun West of the Moon tale where the main character needs to rescue their beloved from the giant/ogre?

I don't think it's from East of the Sun... I'm not sure how old the child is, but I picture her around 9 years old. Someone else suggested Clever Beatrice, but that's not it either. (Similar idea, though!) In looking at it, I realized that it doesn't have elaborate illustrations like Clever Beatrice. I picture much "simpler" illustrations, not necessarily cartoonish, but more like that.

I think one of the challenges involves a spoon...

Jessica (jessdaygeorge) | 191 comments In East o' the Sun, she's older and trying to free her beloved from the trolls. There's no jar of earth, she has a golden apple, a spindle, and a carding comb.

Rezikiel | 15 comments Thanks, Jessica. That's definitely not it, then.

Jessica (jessdaygeorge) | 191 comments Yep. I'm somewhat of an expert on East o' the Sun!

Rezikiel, are you still looking for this or did you find it?

SBC (essbeecee) | 1594 comments I was going to suggest Valiant, which is a retelling of The Brave Little Tailor, where the heroine challenges the giant to lots of contests and keeps winning by trickery. Valiant is too recent for your query but could your story be another retelling of that fairy tale?
