Ankhorite | 9 comments This was a young adult short book or long story I read in English in sixth grade back in 1970. Genevieve Trueheart - Truhart? - was a young boy's dog, with long hair and chocolate blood. He was ashamed of her -- I forget why -- and she saves his life (if I recall correctly).

I'd REALLY like to track this book or story down! Thanks in advance for any help.

Sirvantes | 180 comments I don't know the book, but a couple of snippets on googlebooks refer to a story called "Genevieve Trueheart, Man's Best Friend". The dog is a golden retriever who grew up eating chocolate and sweets, and belongs to Tom's Aunt Prudence. The boy and dog come face to face with a cougar. The story appears to have been included in the Crossroads reading textbook, by ABEKA, because I found an excerpt of it online: http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&...

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) | 1396 comments Can anyone find the book on Goodreads? That was we can shelve it. Thanks.

Or, if you can find an ISBN or the book elsewhere, I can import the book to this site. Thanks!!!

Cathy (lltoo) | 143 comments I found the story is also in the book "The Nest" by Henry Baron, which apparently is a textbook from 1976, so not the one Ankhorite read in 1970, but another option.

The author of the story "G. Trueheart, Man's Best Friend," is James McNamee and it looks like it's been around since at least the 1950s because I found it referenced in the Short Story Index 1959 Supplement on Google Books, just can't get inside to see where it is!

These are the ISBNs for The Nest that WorldCat has:

ISBN: 0874634318 9780874634310 0802816274 9780802816276

Thank you for the extra info, Cathy, I had no idea the story was that old. Thanks also to Lisa for importing it.
