YES YES a million times YES! The book had so much detail and adventure, but the movie was the complete opposite. It was the longest book, but it was the shortest movie! HOW WRONG IS THAT!

Honestly none of the movies do the books justice. I have to separate them into different things. Treat the movie like I haven't read the book 1000 times. When I finally managed to do that, I have enjoyed the movies more. Unfortunately movie studios aren't willing to make 5 hr long movies, so they have to cut a lot of the good stuff out :(
all the harry potter books were so good that they couldn't possible make a movie equally good
Of course, they disappointing. If we never compare them to books, then OK...
The movie goes by so fast that all the intricate and interesting detail in the book is glossed over or left out, such as all of Umbridge's decrees. I agree with whoever said one must treat movies and their source books as separate entities. It makes the movie so much more enjoyable when one doesn't compare it to the book. (The book is almost always better.) Still, I was disappointed in this movie because of how fast it went. I was shocked that it was over so quickly! It seemed almost a summary of what happened in the book instead of a fully fleshed-out plot.
Aside from the timing issues, the rest of the movie wasn't that bad.

I think that technically the movie was good, but in terms of following the book - a total let down. OOTP is my favourite of the HP books, and the fact that the rebellion against Umbridge is such a huge part of the books, and for it to be illustrated less than satisfactory was a huge let down. Personally I had been looking forward to McGonagall and Umbridge going head to head - especially since Maggie Smith is a MASTER of sarcastic remarks and she and Imelda Staunton could have been so great together!
But as I said, technically it was a good movie. I loved the whole Prophet newspaper theme and the flashbacks. And the DA meetings and Filch trying to catch them at it was just hilarious, plus Staunton did a fantastic job of portraying Umbridge.

I like the movie as far as movies go, but I think it was disappointing compared to the book...as were all of the Harry Potter movies!
I though this was one of the best books of the saga, but then i saw the movie and... come on! It's the worst movie! 100% dissapointing!
Meh Book 5 and 6 were pretty terrible to call their structure a plot is offensive to big books full of plot. For example game of thrones is shorter and that book is intense. Also most films by David Yates are horrific anyway so no it did not.
book was far better i know, but if you compare the movie with all other hp movies, in this movie they have tried much better than other hp movies to adapt the book.
It was my least favourite movie, the changes from book to movie didn't bother me so much it was just repetitive and boring.
Some stuff was done well visually (Umbridge being super-pink, decrees coming in faster and faster, indicating the speed at which everything is heading south). However my favorite part in the book was mishandled IMO. When Voldemort enters Harry's mind at the end and tries to take him over, in the book Harry is thinking about death- thereby looking forward to seeing Sirius and his family in the afterlife- thereby filling his heart with love and expelling Voldemort. I thought it was so sweet I almost cried. In the movie all you get is some inane stuff about him having love and friendship, no emotional impact at all.
yes...especially since the fifth book was my favorite. I have seen the movie three years come to think of it, but I remember not being crazy about it when it came to following the book. However, one thing I keep having to remind myself is the fact that the book was also the longest book in the series. So, of course they had to take out a lot. I mean the seventh book isn't as long as the fifth and that was made into two movies.
Agreed. The movie was far to disappointing, I think it could have been better. But no they messed it up... Crazies!! U shouldn't mess up a good book!! I say they've done this to almost every movie they did, they just mess every part in the book. -_-
It's very rare that a movie is better than the book. But I like the movies. Of course not as much as I like the books..
When I first saw OOTP I was excited and all that. But the more I thought about it, the more I actually noticed how disappointed I really was. I personally think that in OOTP they used the special effect too much. It feels like they thought more about the special effect than the script, which makes me really sad.
The only thing I actually like about this movie is the scene right after Sirius' death, where Harry tries to run to the veil, but is held back by Remus. There's no sound other than the background music and you just see Harry struggling to get free of Remus' grasp while screaming. It shows just how much chaos there is inside Harry at the time.

It was my least favorite HP (but I still liked it over all), and the movie was.... bad. :/ It is the worst movie in the series, they cut too much out, and dragged out other parts. Then again, that book dragged in parts, mostly due to the thins with Cho and O.W.Ls.
The best part of the book was Umbridge, and the problems she caused. The old bitch reminds me of my mom's mom who was just as controling, insane, fake, and hateful. I really related to Harry's struggle with her, and I was very dissapointed to see that downplayed in the movie.

I think so, they took out so much of the action. Plus, THEY DIDN'T SHOW THE BRAINS OR THE HUMMINGBIRD JAR. D:
Well this is just expected. They can not put all details from the book in a movie. And people always imagine characters different, or has its favorite parts that might not appear in the movie, and so on. Its nice to watch movies based on books sometimes, but always keep in mind, that most of the time they don't make justice to the book.
No.I don't think so. I personally don't understand why so many people hate "movie Ginny". I liked her even though they didn't give her much importance in the movies and the few scenes in which we see her were not bad.
Also, Imelda Staunton's acting made me "love" to hate Dolores Umbridge even more and Fred and George were funny and...
IDK. I just guess I liked the movies.

The books are better than the movies. but I do think that they usually are. I would have loved to see more of the Quiddich world cup.
having said that, I love the films too. I saw the first two before reading the books. they are enchanting.
and yep, I cued at midnight to buy the Half Blood Prince. I then finished it by the next evening.

Honestly, I prefer the movie to the book. The book was extremely bloated and needed to be cut down by about 300 pages. A lot of the scenes did not contribute to any plot movement at all. The movie was a very refreshing length and wrapped up everything nicely.
There is a feeling you get from the books, like a certain smell a favorite perfume has, you loose the feeling because its all about the small details explained in a way only rowling can describe that is missing on a movie set, to me all movies of books are just clift notes to the books themselves.
I agree. OOTP is my FAVORITE HP book and the movie just didn't do it for me.
YES! it was COMPLETELY innaccurate! they spent to much time on harry being all dramatic. i think it was a low point in dan's acting
I HATED the OOTP movie. Harry came across as desperate instead of angry. How the heck could we be sad about Serius's death if we never got to see him and how much he cared about Harry? I have no problem sitting through a 2.5 or 3hr movie (ala LOTR) if it's good.
I couldn't understand how 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix' was the longest book in the series, but the shortest film. I understand that in the filmmaking process things need to be cut out, but the movie was not faithful to the book at all. They chose to focus on the wrong things, giving the film a completely different feel than the book.
I'm glad to find fans of the book here. Most people hate this one, but it's my favorite. And I have to agree that none of the movies do the books justice. What disappointed me most was the butchering of Luna's best line: "It's not as though I'll never see Mom again, though, is it?" They didn't do badly on occulmency, though.
I was not crazy about the book but thought the treatment of the movie wasn't awful.
I didn't hate the movie...I was just really disappointed with it. I know the fifth one supposed to be a little dark, but, the movie was just too dark for me... anyone else?

Well, you could say, the movie was a cliff note to the book!

OOTP was my favorite book, and I was disappointed with the movie. Like people said, it was the shortest movie but the longest book. That's not to say I didn't enjoy the movie because I enjoy all of them, but the book was SO much better.
No. The movie is GREAT. The book is one of the most disappointing of the series. I am a HUGE HP fan, and while I would say I "love" this book, it needs some serious editing. I love JK, but I think the movie version makes the 5th story more coherent.
I never really loved the fifth books as much as the others, but I was really disappointed in the movie. I think they overplayed the whole Harry being angry thing, and made it way to dramatic. They could have kept the same dark tone, but still kept it light and enjoyable like I thought the sixth movie was.
They always are. They're never as good as the books.
But then they never could be. And the filmmakers did an amazing job, regardless.

The book was probably the less intriguing in the series but it was OK. The movie though has to be one of my favorites because of the epic fight scenes at the end.I mean ITS VOLDEMORT VS DUMBLEDORE a true HP fan would love that :D
This was my least favorite book because it dragged at times; it wasn't as fast-paced as the others. I thought the movie was a huge improvement over the previous 2-- POA preferred substance over style, and the story got lost, plus the werewolf was weak; and GOF wasn't that great, but I loved the scene at the dance when Hermione comes down the stairs. The one thing that was lacking in OOTP is it doesn't show how powerful Dumbledore is, why Voldemort fears him, Voldy almost defeats him.
TO SUM UP: OOTP is my least favorite book, but the movie is better than #3 & #4

YES,very disappointing. After the first time i have seen the movie i was even pissed off.OOTP is my fave HP book (along with POA) and the movie did no justice to it.
But now i am ok with it...as long as i don´t think about everything that is missing.IMHO,this movie should have had two parts...
The highlight was probably the acting of Imelda Staunton (Umbridge)...and Sirius/Remus,ha:)
