Jenny (notestothemoon) Hey, I read a book when I was young that was about rats and I think they lived in the sewers and there were evil rats in it as well. I know the front cover had red evil eyes on the front (I think ha ha). I'm sure it was part of a series but I can't remember for the life of me what the book, the author or the series was called?? Thanks Jen xx

Graeme | 4 comments Is it "The Dark Portal" by Robin Jarvis? It's book one of the Deptford Mice Trilogy.

Katrina Maybe "The Secret of N.I.M.H."/a.k.a. "Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of N.I.M.H.", although I think those rats lived under a rose bush, not in the sewer. They were also hyper-intelligent - good book!

Evan | 27 comments I'm not sure how long ago you were 'young,' but there's a moderately good children's/ya series with gigantic good and evil rats underground, starting with "Gregor the Overlander." I think it came out this decade though.

Jen | 23 comments Moderately good? I think this is the best children's fantasy series since HP began. I heart Boots. :)

Jackie "the Librarian" | 219 comments Yes, it sounds like The Dark Portal by Robin Jarvis to me, too.
In the sewers of Deptford, there lurks a dark presence that fills the tunnels with fear. The rats worship it in the blackness; name it "Jupiter, Lord of All." Into this twilight realm wanders a small; frightened mouse - the unwitting trigger of a chain of events that hurtles the Deptford mice into a world of heroic adventure and terror.
It came out in the U.S. in 2000, but had been published in the U.K. back in 1989.
It's the first book in the Deptford Mice trilogy.
