OrdinaryUser The key reasons, why Mockingjay book, does not work...storywise.

1. Missile attack by Capitol on D13 would never happen. The reason for this is the "MAD" in place due to ownership of nuclear arsenal by both sides. President Snow would never order (without a serious risk of being removed from power by his own military - aka "peacekeepers") a strike with long range missiles directly on D13, since there would be no guarantee, that D13 is not going to retaliate and launch missles before Capitol missiles actually impact, revealing that they are not nuke armed (It is clearly stated in the book that D13 has radars!). Those who remember MAD (from Cold war) know what I am talking about. Therefore, Peeta Mellark would not have any warning to deliver via TV show and his fate would be significantly different (as well as Johanna Mason´s... who was captured by Capitol too...do not look surprised now, please).

2. Rescue mission to Capitol. The mission itself was not the problem. The problem was event that followed. It is clearly stated in the book (even by Plutarch Havensbee) that Mellark´s state was getting worse before the actual rescue (they noticed it...) and that itself along with strict (military like) procedures of D13 would naturally prevent the contact of Everdeen with Mellark after the rescue mission. Mellark would be isolated, interrogated and treated before ever meeting Everdeen. During this process it would be revealed that his state is not suitable for meeting Everdeen. When you search in the book how people are properly checked before entering D13, you will realize (hopefully) that author of the book made this move purely and only for artificial alienation of Everdeen and Mellark for the rest of the book. You can imagine what would happen if key characters involved in this "alienation" of the two did their job properly as they were supposed by the environment they were in...

3. End of the war... The book clearly states that Capitol during the end phase of the war still had nuclear arsenal. Yes, we are back with the nukes. Sorry, not sorry. This time however we have to evaluate another part of MAD. The reason why ANY nuclear power is virtually undefeatable is the fact that when you push your "nuclear" opponent to the corner (just like D13 via other districts did) It would end with "nuclear standoff", probably somewhere in the phase, where rebels surrounded fortress in District 2. Therefore, there would be no further advance on Capitol itself, or defeat of the fortress in D2 either. At this point, both sides would have to stand down and bring down some kind of resolution (like Mellark implied in TV when talking about cease-fire). Sidenote: That does not mean that Capitol "leadership" would not be defeated. Do not get this wrong...

Now, I hope I did explained my standpoint on this. As you can see (as I hope) I took step back and watched the story as a whole. There are still things I did not mentioned due to "characters left" constraint, but It is clear (at least to me) that author of the book made serious mistakes in terms of logical storytelling and effectively destroyed adult characters in this book for no other reason than artificially create the storyline for Katniss Everdeen using unnatural/illogical decision-making of adult characters (namely Snow, Coin, Havensbee, Haymitch), which is the most stupid thing to do when writing book like this. You might disagree with me but I realized that "big" things in story directly affects "main character" and those big things in this book are just screwed...artificially. You cannot squeeze reasonable (therefore satisfying) story out of it. And no, the fact that book was “intended” for “younger” audience, does not make an excuse for bad writing.

message 302: by KRITYA (new) - rated it 3 stars

KRITYA The ending was just weird with so many loose ends , like why kill the innocent Prim she had an amazing life ahead of her :(. The story felt very rushed with a massive change in Peeta's character.
