This was a children's novel about a boy whose parents are artists of at least moderate acclaim. The boy doesn't like having artists for parents despite his own latent talent for art. He enters a new school in a cold state and makes a new best friend. The friend is a year younger than him because he skipped a grade and lives in a house that is entirely decorated in black, white, and red. The friend gets chicken pox and so does a lot of the rest of the school.
