SOLVED. Boy in disguise as girl [s]

In eighth grade I read an odd English novel from my school library. It was about a boy, the cousin of the narrator, who goes to school in disguise as a girl for some reason I can't remember. He looked and sounded quite feminine and so it wasn't difficult for him to pass as a female physically, but his mannerisms were a different story. He ended up becoming quite popular and girls all over the school started mimicking his masculine manners (including wearing sports watches and crotch-grabbing).

I believe the boy was American, and his parents were either gangsters or just generally unsavory people. They came to his school talent show dressed in their idea of what English people dressed like (summer dress and enormous hat for her, yachting outfit for him). At that talent show, his secret is dramatically revealed when his voice changes right in the middle of a song he is singing with his band.

He was also involved in a kind of romance with a girl who may have been Indian and liked the same kind of music as him; she seemed happy enough to find out he was really a boy.
