Listening To in June 2011
I'm listening to Mr. Cavendish, I Presume. I've been giggling like crazy (the writing in some romance novels sounds a bit funny when read aloud, I think.)
Who's narrating the Julia Quinn D.G.? The narrator makes all the difference in the eye rolling department for me. :D
Rosalyn Landor. To be fair, Julia Quinn's books are supposed to be funny and the narrator has a way about her that makes you want to laugh...but the parts I'm finding funny are when the hero is thinking. He just sounds too self important and I wonder if he's being serious. As my late mother in law would have said 'he thinks wonders who he is.'
Ahhh, not being a fan of Landor's male voices I completely understand. She catches the rest right most of the time, so at least that's a plus. :) I want to hear the humor when it's there and Julia Quinn does a good job of writing it into her books.
So I dnfed the Julia Quinn book (not Landor's fault...I just wasn't enjoying the story.) Then I start The Peach Keeper, which is a book I'm really looking forward as SAA is one of my favorite authors. Then I listen to 5 minutes and I couldn't continue because the narrator sounds like she's crazy! She narrates in a weird singsong voice with really awkward pauses...I guess that was her attempt to convey the magical atmosphere but it didn't work AT ALL. She just sounds like she's thisclose of being sent to the looney bin.
Now I'll have to get a print copy...and I was so excited I was able to get the audiobook from the library so quickly!!
I tried the sample of the Julia Quinn book and wasn't too wowed, by the voice or the story...so it went in the some day maybe pile...its a pity, since I was sort of looking forward to the smith-smyth girls

I'll try the first book in the Smythy-Smith quartet in print and see how I like it.So after my failures of last night, I started a third audiobook A Wallflower Christmas, also narrated by Landor. This one is so much better! Not only the story but the narration too! I think I like this somewhat sober Landor better.
I'm almost done with it...although I just realized it's not a good idea to listen to love scenes at work, LOL!
Finished Lover Mine. Need to attempt the first Magic book by Ilona Andrews again (it's not catching my fancy). Tried Eve Silver's book (forget the title) but it didn't work either. I need something to sweep me away.
Krissy, several false starts for me on the Magic series, too. Book 3 is excellent and book 4 Magic Bleeds is Smashing Good! What a payoff in the romance department! And the final scene...whoa, jaw dropping. Narrator Raudman nails it. Thanks to Brenda for helping me get into it. It's a smashing good series, really!
Yesterday I started listening The Ditchdigger's Daughters: A Black Family's Astonishing Success Story and oh wow! The story is so engaging, touching and funny. The narrator is doing a pretty good job so far.
And the final scene...whoa, jaw dropping. Narrator Raudman nails it. I can listen from the last battle scene to the end of the book again and again, it has yet to get old. :) Raudman is smoking hot with Ilona Andrews writing in her hands.
Can't wait to hear her with Magic Slays next week. I could hear Raudman's voice in my head as I read, but the real thing will be much better. :D
I finished
and
. I must have been in a piratey mood last month! I liked both and am passing Raiders Ransom on to my 9 y/o. Now I have started
and am not as excited about it as I was with the first elemental assassin. Perhaps not enough romance? I have 4 credits though and am looking for my next book.
I finished
. Didn't care for the stories by Mary Jo Putney and Kristin James, but enjoyed the story by Charlotte Featherstone. Now I am listening to
Colleen Gleason's 3rd book in her Draculia series.
I'm about to finish A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. It's read by Jennifer Ikeda. It has fantasy, history, romance, and paranormal elements. I've enjoyed it so far. The narration is good. This is supposed to be the first of a trilogy.
Purdy_gerdie wrote: "I'm listening to
by Jennifer Estep and I am also listening to
by Patricia Briggs."How did you like Spider's Bite? I have it on audio and in paperback but haven't decided which one to do.
I'm listening to
right now but just finished up
. It was good. I'm bummed though because I can't find Book 2 or 3 in audio. Book 4 and 5 are available but they skip 2 books.
I just finished
and thought it was sexy/cute/pretty good but the narration was terrible. I'm not sure what I'm in the mood to listen to next.
I started listening to
. The narrator seems good so far but I'd like to wait until I hear the hero to know if I'd like to continue.
Just finished Dream of Me/Believe in Me & Come Back to Me. Really liked this series.Thinking of starting either Land of Falling Stars or Death Angel next.

You know, I loved Dream of Me and have listened to it several times. But I have never listened to the other two! How did I miss this?? Running over to Audible to purchase the other two.
"I started listening to

Sigh...another book to read on print...
I'm currently listening to Visions of Heat. I'm not that far along with it. Thinking of something historical next, something light. Maybe Julia Quinn of Julie Garwood. :)
D.G.If you stay with the series (which I highly recommend), Jericho's voice changes in books four and five with the addition of Phil Gigante performing the male charaters. Fantastic!

That's what I've heard, Lea! I've never listened a book narrated by him but I've heard sooo many good things!
Listening to You Belong to Me by Karen Rose narrated by Marguerite Gavin. Gavin is very good at m/f conversation. I wonder...how do you do that? Have a conversation with yourself in two different voices? It's a skill not all narrators have.Audible says Magic Slays will be released on their site this Friday 6/10. I found myself as a go-between in a twitter conversation this morning with Tantor and Audible. The @audiblehelps account on twitter is the place to get answers.
Diana wrote: "Audible says Magic Slays will be released on their site this Friday 6/10."Audible must have felt the pressure; Magic Slays is available now.
Finally finished the first Magic book by Ilona Andrews and liked it. I wonder if all the gross/gore was because it was co-written by a man? Not to be sexist, but the gross level was pretty high. Not sure what I'll read next. I'd love a good historical before I go on to the next Magic book.
I was going to suggest Lady of the Butterflies (I read it didn't listen, it was when I did text editing). It is a historical romance but doesn't have so much.... action. http://www.tantor.com/BookDetail.asp?...
We also have Dracula, My Love which is from Mina Harker's POV and her love of Dracula. But I haven't gotten to that one so I can't honestly say how good it is.
Lady of the Butterflies sounds lovely. I need to check the Tantor site and see what else is coming up.
I just finished
and
. I can not wait for the next book in this series!!! Absolutely fabulous! I am currently listening to
...its okay..predictable...narrator has done a better job at other Kenyon books...its okay...it is a time passer until I come across something else.

Yes!!!! His voice does change with Phil Gigante perfoming the male character...it is absolutely delectable! He did a great job narrating! Loved it!
i'm almost done with
- really enjoying this addition to the Wallander series, and I reserved the next one from the library - next up is
I'm thinking of switching to print for books 2 & 3. I'm enjoying the book but I'm nowhere crazy about it and I don't know if it is because I'm barely a third to the book or because of the narration.
Darkfever gets better, but the first book is really slow and a lot of people want to give up on it...Mac gets better...but Phil comes in at book 4 with another female narrator - sort of threw me at the beginning
D.G. ~Vile Temptress~ wrote: "I started the famous Darkfever. Don't care for Jericho's voice but the rest is going well."Phil Gigante was great in the Fever series....I did not care for the new female narrator, while not bad I like the narration from the one that did the first 3
