Thanks Mickey. I enjoyed Asimov's Elijah Bailey Robot series immensely when I read it 20 years ago. Positronic brains (such as the one in Star Trek Next Generation's character Data) were invented by Asimov, as were the three laws of robotics, and probably even the present day way use of the term robot, certainly the term "robotics". Besides, in the Golden Age of science fiction it was said that three authors towered above the others: Clarke, Heinlein, and Asimov. The first two are represented by more than one work on our list. I decided it was Isaac's turn for a repeat. It was not an easy choice for me though when Lester del Rey, Gordon R. Dickson, Ben Bova, Alan Dean Foster, Andre Norton, and Marion Zimmer Bradley remain unrepresented on our list. These authors may not be the current darlings of our faddish field, but they will one day return to be better appreciated, I have no doubt. Reading through an Andre Norton work is like taking a clinic on how to write science fiction.

I choose a very very old old one that seems like a precursor to Star Trek. The one I choose was from 1939, The Voyage of the Space Beagle
Caves of steel was the second Science fiction book I have ever read, Foundation was first. When I signed up for the science fiction book club over thirty years ago. I also liked the robot short stories as well as the Susan Calvin ones. (The iRobot movie was half based on Susan Calvin).

If I'm counting correctly, we now have 64 books on this list. I've been slowly reading the books by authors I've not read before and am finding it to be an excellent source of good reads. I am quite glad that Mark started it - almost 3 years ago.

I also loved A Canticle for Leibowitz. I read it many years ago and was thinking of reading it again, but there doesn't appear to be a Kindle edition.

The Mote in God's Eye and Lucifer's Hammer were two books my father INSISTED I had to read.

Lists do fascinate me. Our list currently has at least one author with a last name starting with 18 or the 26 letters of the alphabet. Now Mark has limited us to one pick each, so I won't be willy nilly adding authors and books to fill the gap! But I wonder if there are any members of the group who have not added their favorite sci fi book who might have one by an author whose last name starting with I, J, K, Q, T, U, X, or Y?
Off the top of my head, I can think of a K (Nancy Kress, whose Beggars in Space we are reading this May) and T (Shari Tepper, whose Grass we will be reading in June).

As 2014 ends, I thought it might be a good time to see how many books are on our list. By my count, there are now 75 books, with only 8 letters of the alphabet unrepresented by an author! (The B's are leading, with 11 authors with surnames starting with "B"!)
I've read 43 of them. Of those I only see one I don't believe belongs on a best books list. It's one of the newer ones I suspect will fall in favor over time because the writing quality isn't up to snuff, in my opinion. It's Old Man's War. I read it with a reading group. Opinions were very mixed, some hating it, some not caring about it, others liking it.
Quick count got me to 57 read. For me Old Mans War fits nicely in the list if only for pure enjoyability, not many of the above 57 have made me pull an all-nighter to finish in one go like that one did.
I wonder about Battlefield Earth. Does it really belong on this list? Considering it has a 3.42 rating on this site. Also it’s author was kind of a charlatan.

Also it’s author was kind of a charlatan."I've never read Battlefield Earth, but I know some people love it. What ever you think about Scientology, charlatanism or otherwise, L. Ron Hubbard was one of the great pulp writers. His novel, Fear (which wouldn't fit this list) is wonferful. Unfortunately, his later fiction work became not much more than an advertisement for the religion he created. I'm not sure if that played a part in Battlefield Earth.
There's some of it in the book's basic assumptions. That said the list was for people to add the books they wanted. I read Battlefield Earth and it's a pretty good sci/fi read no matter what the author was basing it's assumptions. I've read books that carry other religious and/or philosophical views but told a good story. There's some heavy Mormonism in a lot of Orson Scott Card's books.
