hey guys-the way this list works is that you copy and paste the list, and then add your best sci-fi book to the bottom of the list....

actually, nevermind my message above! i looked over your list, and as far as the scifi books on your list go, a couple are already on the list, one is a middle installment in a series (Dragondawn of the Pern series), with only 1 scifi book remaining. so i'll just add that one for you...

LindaJ^ (lindajs) | 260 comments Great books on this list. Choosing one book is really difficult. I narrowed first by not repeating an author on the list, which removed a lot of possibilities! Then I decided to pick a book by an author that is not predominantly a sci-fi writer and then flipped a coin!

message 65: by LindaJ^ (new)

LindaJ^ (lindajs) | 260 comments It's a two-book series but first book is standalone. The author's most recent novel is Doc, which is not science fiction - it is a western!

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 372 comments I'm surprised it took so long for Sparrow to hit the list now that I see it. It's probably on a lot of favorite lists but not the top.

message 73: by LindaJ^ (new)

LindaJ^ (lindajs) | 260 comments I like this list as a source of sci fi books and authors I should read if I haven't so I copied it and put it in alphabetical order to make it easier to look for the books when I wander into used book stores. In doing that exercise, I realized there was no Margaret Atwood book on the list. Since I've already made a nomination, I wonder if there is someone who has not made a nomination that, like me, thinks Atwood should appear!?

The good folks who take the time compiling these lists have served to remind me of some great books that I haven't read in years and some that are completely new to me. (in the past, I'd never given "Battlefield Earth" a second thought, but now....)

Thanks,

LindaJ^ (lindajs) | 260 comments Here's some trivia about our list. As of the addition of Judas Unchained, there are 51 authors and 60 titles on our list. Authors with surnames starting with "B" are the most numerous with 10 different authors, followed by "S" with 8 and "H" with 6. The author with the most books listed is Arthur C. Clarke with 3, followed by seven authors with 2 books listed -- Zelazny, Niven, Heinlein, Hamilton, Dick, Card and Bradbury. I believe the low number of repeat authors is a result of many contributors attempting to not duplicate an author already listed. But since our Group has 1000+ members and only 60 have put a book on the list, there is a lot of opportunity for expansion! I am using it to expand my SciFi reading to authors I have not previously read or finding a new book by an author I have read.

thanks for the stats Linda! rather surprising to see Hamilton in such exalted company. but he's a guilty favorite of mine so I'm surprised in a good way.

like yourself, I also use this list (and its parallel lists in Fantasy Aficionados & Horror Aficionados) as a way to expand my own reading. handy!

message 95: by Dylan (new)

Dylan (dyarch) Some additional stats. The list includes:

43 male authors
10 female authors

29 living authors
24 deceased authors

(There are 53 individual authors, not 51, as two of the books have multiple authors.)

message 96: by Alan (new)

Alan | 13 comments Actually, 52 authors, isn't it?
Niven is the author of one book and the co-author of another on the list.

message 97: by Dylan (new)

Dylan (dyarch) No, I got 53. I believe Linda counted Niven/Pournelle as a redundant entry for Niven, while counting Spider and Jeanne Robinson as a single author, thus not counting two individuals (Pournelle and Jeanne). Or she made some other counting error, or I did.

Dylan, you correctly discerned how I reached my total. I did indeed count as if there was only one author per book. Your count is, I believe, more accurate.
