Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) Hi All,

Now don't get me wrong. I am not hating on all reality shows. Some of them I enjoy. I like the competition type ones and the ones that deal with jobs, etc. My favorites are shows like Ax Men, Coal, Dual Survival, Project Runway, Out of the Wild, RuPaul's Drag Race, Parking Wars, and some others.

I don't care for the sleazier shows like the dating ones or the ones about hasbeen celebrities. But I am not knocking what others like. They just aren't my type due to too much drama and being so outrageous. Also it's like with these once you've seen one, you've seen them all.

Anyway, is it safe to say that those of us who had hoped that reality television wouldn't take over have lost the war? My dad and I were talking about this the other night. I believe it was 48 Hours or something and they did a segment on what's killing soap operas. I am sure everyone knows that All My Children and One Life to Live are going to be gone from the face of the earth. They will end up on a long list alongside Guiding Light, Another World and As the World Turns. And I will not be surprised if General Hospital is next. There are already some rumors swarming. Anyway, the 48 Hours episode said that reality television is "killing" everything else. Comedies are suffering and even long time dramas like CSI and Law and Order aren't as popular as they once were.

I don't even hold my breath these days when new shows come on. I believe comedies and dramas have no luck of making it. Look at all the new shows released last season. Only a handful of (dramas and comedies) were renewed for next season. The rest were cancelled and the majority of shows that are coming back are reality shows.

Maybe it's just the sign of the times. Dad says this generation is what's so different. He says people these days don't wanna watch stuff where they have to think out plots or figure out something. He says folks these days want the trash television and many don't commit to anything else. I guess if you look at it that way, we've lost the war. I thought reality shows were a fad but I think I'm wrong. If not, then it will probably be a long time before they disappear.

Maybe they are here to stay. Who knows? Like I said, I do enjoy some of them but I don't wanna look around ten years from now and see nothing but reality shows on the air. Then again I guess that would be our own fault because as long as people watch them, they will get ratings and they will survive.

Interesting though. Do you think reality shows are here to stay? I remember folks asked this about ten years ago and most said no. Now, I'm not so sure. I just hope that we still have a variety of programming if that's not too hard to ask for.

LOL!

Best Wishes!

Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) Another thing, a lot of us thought judge shows were fads too and Judge Judy is going on twenty years soon. LOL! Sometimes you can't tell what is gonna stay and what won't.

Thank goodness for books.

Delaney Diamond (delaney_diamond) First things first, please don't hate on Judge Judy. That's my girl, especially now that Oprah's gone. Personally, I'd never go on her show and I don't know where people find the chutzpah to do it. She's so cutthroat, but she gets right to the heart of the matter. :)

I've actually noticed an increase in scripted shows in the past few years. A few years ago I couldn't find anything to watch on TV except reality shows. Now there are more shows I take time out to view, such as Modern Family, Rules of Engagement, Happy Endings (can you tell I like comedies?).

Then there's my favorite drama, L&O SVU, but that's been around for awhile. Hawaii Five-O is new and popular, although I only watch it occasionally. And there seem to be a plethora of shows being produced for cable on channels like FX and TNT.

I agree with your dad to some degree, but I think that reality shows seem popular because people just can't believe the conduct of the "actors," and they get a lot of press because of it. I also think money plays a role. Aren't reality shows less expensive to produce (excluding maybe some like Amazing Race)? Could that be why why Hollywood keeps churning them out?

Off Topic: Delaney, did you know that Elloit will not be on SVU anymore. They might replace him, but the actor that's plays Elliot is leaving the show.

Ice T has a reality show coming on. I didn't know that he left SVU. I watch the show on USA. Either I'm behind or his departure episode didn't come on USA yet.

Delaney Diamond (delaney_diamond) Yes, Arch, I know. I'm quietly grieving. I keep hoping that they'll be able to work something out so he can stay on.

I didn't know Ice T will have a reality show. Maybe he's doing it at the same time as L&O...? As far as I know, he hasn't left the show.

I heard Jennifer Love Hewitt will be on the show and Hargitay's role will be cut back because she wants to spend more time with her family.

I like Hewitt. She did a guest spot awhile back as a victim and did a heck of a job.

I don't know if L&O will still be as engaging with all these changes, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Debbie (halfpint66) | 221 comments I love DWTS, because I love to watch ballroom dancing. Hate all those other talent shows. I have a few "reality" shows I like. I love The Little Couple on TLC which starts back up tonight and Gene Simmons Family Jewels,..........Been a big fan of his and KISS for years. I love pretty much anything on HGTV and a few shows on the DIY channel even though I don't own my own home and can't do improvements. Love all CSI shows, NCIS, Hawaii Five-O, Criminal Minds, The Mentalist. I love Law & Order L.A. and a few shows on TNT that I dvr. I dvr a lot of the CSI reruns from previous seasons I missed that are on TNT.

Delaney Diamond (delaney_diamond) L&O LA is a done deal. They never got enough of a following.

The Closer is a show that went away that I enjoyed. I thought it was really popular, so I was surprised when it got cancelled.

After the first season, I lose interest in the talent shows: American Idol, So You Think You Can Dance, DWTS, etc. I can't tell you the last time I've watched them. I don't dislike them. I just never get attached enough to keep tuning in.

Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) Delaney, LOL! I'm not hating on your girl. I like Judge Judy. My favorite court show used to be Judge Mathis though but they moved him to 10 am here in Houston so I don't see him now. Judge Joe is okay too. One of my favorites is Swift Justice. I am a big Nancy Grace fan and was upset to learn that she will no longer be on the show. They are moving the show from Atlanta to Cali and Nancy stays in Atlanta. I loved that show because of her, I might not watch it now. I used to love Judge Alex but don't like his show since he moved to Cali. He used to film here in Houston. I have love for the judge shows, but back in the day I didn't think they'd stay on this long. Judge Judy came on the year I graduated (96) so it's easy for me to remember her debut.

Best Wishes!

Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) Debbie,

I used to watch The Little Couple since it takes place here in Houston. I enjoyed the show but haven't watched it in a while. I stopped watching it right after they bought that big house. I believe that was the season before last.

Other shows I like are Intervention (though I am tired of it now), Relapse, Obsessed (is that the name, the one with the people who have OCD), Hoarding, Hoarders, Billy The Exterminator, etc.

But to be honest, I get tired of even the ones I like after a while. I guess once I see the same type of show season after season I get bored. For instance Intervention was one I really enjoyed but now I hardly watch it. It seems fake these days. I also would like them to do a show about a person who rejected the help as well as do more follow-up shows. What's the point of showing us these people got help if you never do any follow-ups? I've been watching this show for years and I believe they've only done about three follow-up shows.

Best Wishes!

Can't argue with you there. Books are always a wonderful option.

Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) As for Billy, is he still on? Seems like they've been reruning since last season.

Also I can't forget Dirty Jobs. Mike Rowe is my man. And if you guys like nature shows, check out Dual Survival with Dave and Cody on Discovery. Love these guys.

And how could I forget my prison shows? I LOVE the prison shows. I love Lock Up (though they repeat too much), Lockdown, etc. I was enjoying Prison Women on NatGeo but then they only showed two episodes. What's up with that?

I also love the real-life crime shows like Paula Zahn, Dateline, stuff like that. ID Discovery is one of my favorite channels. I love these types of shows. That's the mystery lover in me. LOL!

Also, hey I have a guilty pleasure for TruTV. I love the World's Dumbest shows. Ha, ha! Anyone else watch those? They are a hoot! I love the ones about the dumbest criminals. I also like Bait Car where the car thieves get trapped in the car.

Delaney Diamond (delaney_diamond) Debbie, thank you! I thought The Closer was over. She's awesome. I'll definitely watch the new season.

TinaNoir | 1457 comments Oh man, I am so over Network tv it is not funny.

I like a handful of reality shows but the only one on network tv I really like is So You Think You Can Dance. Project Runway and Top Checf are my other reality show favorites and they are on Bravo!

Truthfully the reality is that Reality shows are cheaperto produce than scripted shows. But the reason I am over network tv is that they tend to be really lazy and very conservative when it comes to script development.

They either do something that has been done to death or trot out a remake. And the same actors pop up year after year. Really how many shows has Dana Delaney been in?

Right now the only network shows I like are: Community - which is a pop culture/movie/tv geek's dream. The pop cult reference fly fast and furious and it is so cleverly written with a nicely diverse cast.

Modern Family, The Good Wife and Happy Endings. That's it.

Cable networks are a lot more adventurous when it comes to creating scripted series and it shows in the critical response and in the number of viewers they are siphoning off of network. You simply don't see shows like Breaking Bad, Justified, Sons of Anarchy, Mad Men (although in the fall there are two shows that are kinda a Man Men rip-off) on network.

And frankly I am not sad to see Soap Operas go. Good riddance. They haven't changed in damn near 40 years. The same stories, the same families, the same love triangles year after year after year. Secret babies, nobody ever dies for real, women and men get passed around families like a peace pipe. Soaps are incredibly incestuous. I swear on some soaps if you did a chart of who slept with who, a person would end up being less than six degrees sexually separate from their parent or their sibling. Gross.

And what is more, considering how big of a audience people of color, especially women, make up of the soap viewing audience, the lack of any long standing, wide ranging diversity is appalling. So yeah, don't miss them at all.

Delaney Diamond (delaney_diamond) Stacy, I catch an episode of Judge Alex once every blue moon. I have no idea when it's on. I usually run across it by accident.

I like when he gets aggravated, like he can't believe the nonsense he has to deal with in his court room.

Yes Stacy, they are.

Delaney, The Closer didn't get cancelled. I watch that show. It's on hiatus right now, but coming back soon. Saving Grace has gotten cancel. Butch/My Sam, well not body wise, because Sam is built, Butch is not. I don't picture Sam being a Hulk, but nicely built. I don't like too much muscle on a man. Lean muscle is the way to go.

No, I'm not a reality base of people fan, but I've seen some episodes of the following ghetto shows: The Toni Braxton Family or whatever the name is. Basketball wives, Football wives, The real housewives of OC and Atlanta.

Delaney, Ice T did leave the show, to my knowledge. His reality show is about him and his wife, Coco. I think that's her name. It will appear on E! if I am not mistaken.

I like to watch reality shows, such as Say Yes To The Dress. House Hunters, I love watching House Hunters. I watch weight loss shows, no Biggest Loser. I like medical shows.

I don't care for scripted TV shows. These famous and non famous people need to have the camera shut off on them for real.

I watch court shows, but haven't watched one in a while.

Debbie (halfpint66) | 221 comments I love House Hunters, but not the International version. I just can't get into that one. Oh, I forgot to mention that I also love to watch House. I didn't like that show at first when it first started because I thought the lead character played by Hugh Laurie was an ass, but then I just got hooked on it anyway. LOL! I love Say Yes To The Dress. I think Randy needs his own show, I LOVE him!

Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) Arch,

I like the weight loss shows too. I enjoyed Ruby (not sure if she's still on). Then I was enjoying that show on Style where they put the large kids in fat camp to help them lose weight. It debuted last season. I like A&E's Heavy. Hopefully these shows will return for the next season.

Best Wishes!

I can't catch Ruby of Fat at 15 on Style. I don't get that channel. I like watching Heavy, I hope they return too.

Stacy-Deanne Stacy-Deanne (wwwgoodreadscomstacydeanne) I'm not even sure if Ruby is coming back. I haven't seen it since before November. I think Heavy will return because I read it got good ratings. I think some more weight loss shows might be debuting too. That's the in-thing now. LOL!

I have always liked to watch weight loss shows, too bad I don't get Fitv anymore. Discovery Health Challenge or something like that would come on Fitv every year.
