Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments I looked it up online and saw pictures. There is some beautiful architecture there.

That sounds like fun, Judy! When will you be doing this, and how many years are you celebrating?

message 53: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Yay! for Judy!

We'll be registering a whole bunch of books at bookcrossing.com to get them ready to release. I went through be TBR shelves and culled a bunch that I can't see myself ever getting around to reading, like old (but not classic) science fiction, for example.

I mean, reading that artificial intelligence will be fighting to rule the world by 1999 and we'll have to use radios and pay phones to muster opposition, well, I'm just not that interested any more...

Oh yes! since it is a hill station so it is supposed to be "Beautiful because of its greenery and purity"! WOW this sounds dramatic! :D

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments Congrats on 8 years Judy. Have a great time on your boating anniversary celebration.

message 58: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) My available books currently are mostly sf, mystery-thriller, and westerns. But anyone who wants to look, my name on bookcrossing is cherylllr. I do like to share!

message 59: by Cheryl (new)

Cheryl (cherylllr) Oh how fun!

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments Your pictures are great, Judy! What a fun experience.

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments Does anyone have anything planned for the weekend? I'll be working tomorrow. It will be my first attempt at direct deposit payroll. I hope it goes smoothly.

My husband is going to replace the brakes on my SUV. I leave in 2 weeks on a solo journey and need a reliable vehicle. Yesterday I had it detailed. Today a new windshield went on it. Once my husband is done with the brakes, I will get it serviced and I'll be good to go.

message 62: by Brian (new)

Brian Wilson (brianw105) Well, unfortunately, I live right outside of Philadelphia, PA and we are preparing for Hurricane Irene which is due to arrive overnight. They are saying this is an unprecedented storm, as we have already been told to evacuate both in Pennsylvania, as well as in New Jersey and New York, all of which have never occured. The main issue is that in Philadelphia, we have already had record breaking rain thus far in August, and this Hurricane is expected to bring us an additional 5-10 inches of rain, up to 100mph winds, and I must say I am really scared for this event as we have never had to really deal with something of this extent here in PA. We occasionally have dealt with minor wind and rain from other Hurricanes in the past, but for this one to actually make landfall is unprecedented. I will try and report back after this is through, as long as we have electricity! Please say some prayers for this region as we are preparing for this act of nature

message 63: by Brian (new)

Brian Wilson (brianw105) Hey Judy, Yeah as of now they are still forecasting the Hurricane. Looks like it will hit as a Cat 1, so it will not be anything in the likes of Katrina we believe. The main concern that the news has been harping on is the flood and rain issue. The grounds are already saturated since we have already eclipsed the record for rainfall in August, and with expected rains of up to 10", it could be a nasty issue. They kept stating that because the grounds are so saturated, the trees will fall with more ease and with the expected high winds from 50-80mph, it could cause an issue. Hopefully though it will not be as bad as they say, because in all reality, hurricanes are volatile and have a mind of their own, so here's hoping. Im sure you also know how the news loves to talk about nothing less than Armageddon coming upon us, and there is nothing on TV except for all these broadcasts saying the exact same thing on a loop every 10 minutes, so its nothing new. Keeping the fingers crossed!

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments My friend lives near Albany, NY and she learned from a neighbor that the creek floods and cuts them off. She's from Florida and shocked to find herself preparing for a hurricane in NY.

Be safe Brian.

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments Judy wrote: "Good luck with your direct deposit debut, Janice, as well as your trip. Are you going anywhere special? "

I'm going to Fairmont Hot Springs, BC. We have a time share there. I'm taking my sewing machine along to do some quilting, will read, have a jigsaw puzzle to bring, but most importantly I'll have some precious solitude to relax.

message 66: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments Does anyone have plans for the long weekend?

I am leaving here shortly to go visit my mother who had a stroke earlier this week. She has some small improvements each day, but there are also areas of concern.

It will be a 6 hour drive there so will put a big dent into my audiobook that I'm listening to.

message 67: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments I head home tomorrow. I'll stop in at the hospital before I go to meet with the stroke team. My mom is doing quite well, though there is a long road ahead of her.

message 68: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments Today is going to be a busy day packing. I'm going on a solo retreat into the mountains and leaving tomorrow. I'm taking my quilting projects, some books, and a jigsaw puzzle. I'm hoping the little Greek restaurant is still there and open. It will be a nine hour drive tomorrow!

What plans do you all have for the weekend?

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments Does anyone have plans for the weekend?

I'm moving my office tomorrow. I have a u-shaped desk unit that will have to be disassembled, a lateral file, bookcase, armoire, printer table, computer & components, and a whole whack of archive boxes with clients' paperwork.

I'll be glad when it's all over and I'm settled in. It's been a stressful process. To start with, I was given 2 weeks notice to vacate my office during one of my busiest months of the year.

message 72: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (jhaltenburger) Cleaning up a little, catching up a little, running errands. My dad died two weeks ago and I'm still trying to get my head around that and get my life calmed down a little.

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments I'm very sorry to hear about your dad Jennifer. That's tough. Hugs!

You're all going to hate me, but my husband and I went away for the weekend (to Brighton, on the south coast of England). We did all our Christmas shopping and then had the rest of the weekend to do what we liked. The weather was unseasonably wonderful (we sat in the sunshine, gazing at the sea, chatting and reading), went to the theatre and the cinema, had some wonderful meals and generally enjoyed ourselves. We returned home to find our 17 year old son had not trashed the house (not that we were expecting him to, but it was the first time we'd left him home alone for so long).

message 76: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments Which part are we going to hate you for? The trip to Brighton or doing all your Christmas shopping? LOL!

We came home from a trip years ago to find that our son had decided to declutter the living room. All my knicknacks and ornaments were piled on our bed. I was not pleased. LOL!

Your weekend sounded lovely, Cecily.

Cecily | 576 comments Janice wrote: "Which part are we going to hate you for? The trip to Brighton or doing all your Christmas shopping? LOL!..."

Ha ha. The latter, I presume.

(We usually go away for the weekend and do it in one hit, but this year, my husband has a lot of work-related travel before Christmas, so we had to go earlier than normal, though it did mean we had wonderful weather.)

Judy wrote: "What a nice relaxing weekend, Cecily. Could you send some of that nice sunshiney, warm weather this way? :-)"

I think the sunshine has passed. I'm not sure where it's gone, but it's unlikely to be in your direction. Sorry.

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments It's a long weekend here in Canada. Is it in the States as well? Does anyone have exciting plans for the weekend?

I'm going to a quilt retreat and I'm hoping to have lots of fun as well as get some quilting done.

I've travelled from Glasgow to Edinburgh and to the Isle of Raasay. It's a beautiful country and I'd love to visit again some day. I fell in love with Portree on the Isle of Skye.

Never been to Scotland. Hope to someday. The pictures in my mind when I read books set there are beautiful whether set in the city or countryside, or mountainous areas. Another of the joys of reading.

I'm working this weekend. I'd rather be in Scotland drinking a dram of Talisker.

Kim (catmommie) I slept in this morning and skipped church. I'm going to spend the afternoon reading today. I've been only reading 20 pages a night and getting nowhere! then, we'll do the grocery shopping for the week.

message 93: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59850 comments It's the last day of the quilt retreat. I've got a book club meeting on Thursday night and I've only finished the first quarter of the book, so I'll be catching up on my reading in the next couple of days.

Almeta (menfrommarrs) | 11456 comments Debra and I spent last weekend in Las Vegas to attend our brother's wedding at the Cosmopolitan. The reception was on a “veranda” overlooking dancing water fountains at the Bellagio. Absolutely perfect!

I hadn't been to Vegas since New Year's 1981. It sure has changed a lot. Debra had never been. We both had a great time.

We aren't big gamblers (although Debra got pretty involved in her "favorite" slot machine). Debra rode the NY NY casino Coney Island roller coaster, while I had a Pina Colada in Greenwich Village. We went to the aquarium at Mandalay Bay. Saw Mac King at Harrah's, oh and Fat Elvis too. Toured Caesar’s Palace and ogled all the Forum Shops. Went to the Blue Man show at the Venetian.

Town for young people…I am beat and have blisters on my blisters from walking sooo much.

Flew out of Vegas 11:00 p.m. Monday night and landed at Detroit Metro 5:48 a.m. on Tuesday morning. Driving home, my vehicle broke down, had to be towed. So I didn’t get home until around 10:00 a.m.

It is now Thursday and I am sufficiently recovered to move about!

We are both going away again this weekend to Baldwin, MI, a small town near Ludington and Lake Michigan. Now THIS will be more relaxing. Cabin and campfire on the Pierre Marquette River. Taking in the sun and fresh air. Gazing at the stars. READING.

Ludington is a great spot. I have a friend investigating the purchase of a house there. He is just the type to take an old house and turn it into a mansion! (Sow’s Ear to Silk Purse.)

Hamlin House is usually our breakfast destination, then to Lake Michigan to watch the Badger sail.

Where is House of Flavors, downtown?
