Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Oh Fiona, I know how you feel. Its no fun when something you cherish gets smashed! With 2 boys in the house, I walk around terrified that any of my stuff will get wrecked!

message 853: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Fiona: read read read...it helps feeling better and keep going on when you are reading....

message 856: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Lori, where are you? I thought your picture was beautiful. I'm the opposite of most people - the older I get, I can't tolerate the heat. But I love the snow!

Fiona, sorry about your breakage. :(
What's your book after Jane Eyre - Guernsey? (the one whose name you can't remember) That would put a little feel good in your step, Fiona.

:)

message 857: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments That sucks Lori!!! I do not envy you right now.

message 858: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Well,
it is pretty!

message 861: by Melody (new)

Melody | 564 comments Wow, that's beautiful. Not so beautiful for you right now obviously Lori. If we get snow, we only ever get a sprinkling.

message 862: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Fiona, put of your computer, say to yourself you aen't coming back till two o'clock or so and then read!!!!! And come back at the time you said to yourself. (if anyone is wondering if I am so crazy to do that: YES, but it works).

You know what is great? when it starts to rain really heavy and you cna put the window open so you hear it!!! I am doing that now and love it.

message 863: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Oh it is getting even better!!! The thunder si getting really loud and it started to get really windy and a storm seems to get here in a bit. The sound of lots of rain is soooo nice.

message 864: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments Lori, I do not envy that picture at all! I know exactly how you feel, I am dreading when snow comes to Michigan because once it's here it will set up camp for 6 months!

message 865: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
I too am a LOVER of thunder storms/lightening storms.... Fog is great if I dont have to go out in it... this mountain gets cloaked in it sooo badly sometimes you cant see 5 ft in front of you.....

message 866: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments We normally get our first measurable snow on Halloween here but last week we got just enough to cover the deck and grass, now it's beautiful and it's going to be warm for Halloween. I prefer the warmth! Enjoy yours Lori, I'm glad it's you and not me yet. LOL

message 867: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) Lori, I understand your pain. In CT we get a fair amount of snow, although in the city it melts a lot quicker so it's not so bad. I love it when it first comes in, but I hate it when I have to drive in it and when it gets dirty and muddy. We didn't get any yesterday, but I went out during lunch time and it feels like we will be getting some snow soon.

message 868: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Fiona, every morning in England when I saw it was even only raining, let's not even talk about snow, I panicked because everything just stops for a little bit of rain! In Nottingham me and my boyfriend once were dissapointed because it rained a bit and some lightning but nothing more, which we would have liked. But the next day all the newspapers were full of trains that didn't work and the busses were messed up...?????? The country isn't really prepaired for it. I just mean in general, probably there are regions that do better.

Every time you mention the ferry, i am soooo jealous:-)

For now it is really stormy here. someone called me from Irland about an hour ago and the line got disconnected. probably because of the storm and being near the mountains.

message 869: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments I have only taken one or twice the ferry while visiting some places in Italy but I adored it. First of all, I also adore ships(and many other means of transport, I adored studing it). But then after visiting Portsmouth I have this image of the place, the ferry....it jsut looks all so good in my head.

message 870: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) I would have loved to have seen that, Fiona. I remember reading about it though. I love ships. I've done quite a lot of sailing but on yachts mostly (and ferries!) Once I spent a week sailing on a tall ship - being on the helm of a schooner flying all its sails is amazing.

Its pouring with rain here and a cloud is down over the trees making everything look foggy, its not cold though, so its very pleasant.

Paula.. ha ha ha... Yeah, Ive had my fill of the white stuff already, and its only been here one day. Good God, trick or treating with the kids is gonna suck this year. Looks like we will be driving the streets in the car.....

message 872: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments It's too early for snow.
I can't remember any time back home when we had snow for Halloween.
Feel for ya.

message 873: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow! Your kids can dress up as skiers for Halloween! My mom is out in the Rockies and they have a lot of snow-she lives close to a ski resort. It's cold here but no snow yet. Thank goodness. I need to get my snowblower out of the shed!

Sorry about your bad day Fiona. I hope it turns around! :)

message 874: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments Fiona, I hear ya about the customers. We actually had a lady the other day who had the nerve to say that our magazine racks weren't safe because (and I quote), "My four-year-old was climbing on them and she scratched her finger."

I think as opposed to questioning the safety of things in our store, you should be asking yourself why you are allowing your child to climb on the magazine rack in the first place.

message 875: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments Well she called after she left the store and complained to the manager, who had to act like she cared if the kid was ok, but when she was off the phone she told the rest of us about it.

But yes...another sad fact about the society we live in. If something happens to your kid, it can't possibly be your fault so blame it on someone else. I'm embarrassed for that woman.

message 876: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) These posts make my day. I don't feel like I'm the only one dealing with f*cktards all day. =)

message 877: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments LOL, I have been there Lori! Snow or cold, heaven forbid if we didn't go out. The newscasters are making jokes here because the kids costumes will actually be seen this year and not hidden under heavy coats.

message 878: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
Oh Fiona... what a laundry list you have posted! Do you feel better now that its all off your chest? I had to laugh at some of them, and shake my head in disgust at others.... Ewwww... Just ew.

message 879: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Fiona I hate customers (some of them too).

I had two people with their 2 year old little girl in my cafe. He didn't want to buy anything just use the wireless internet which is free. I told him it was free to customers so he ordered coffees, a coke for the little girl, cakes and cookies. Ok, I was happy and was happy to tell them where the attractions on the island were etc. A little while later I saw the little girl was standing on the next table and I asked them to please not to let the child on the table. So they took the child off. Five minutes later I hear something fall. The child was back on the table and had kicked over the not-quite-empty coke can. I went up with a cloth and asked them to take the child off the table. I went back to the kitchen and they walked out. Spilled coke, cookie and cake crumbs everywhere and they didn't even pay the bill.

I was so effing pissed off you wouldn't believe it.

message 880: by Kellie (new)

Kellie (acountkel) | 992 comments Fiona and Petra,

You 2 should write your own blogs.
Your stories are funny, interesting and so enjoyable!

I want more!! :)

message 881: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I worked in retail for 20 years. Who the freak came up with the customer is always right thing? Now that I am the customer, I always think of the sales person or wait staff, and think how i would want to be treated. Some people these days are so freaking stupid! Petra, Don't those people know that someone has to pay for that stuff, and that island ain't all that big, so they better watch out for the barbie with the witchs hat thats going to come hunt them down! I feel for you!

message 882: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments Fiona, I always need to use the bathroom when I get into the bookstore. Without fail. It's weird.

And Ann, I also always try and treat the salesperson or whoever, how I would like to be treated on the job. I've worked guest services for 6 years and now this job at Borders, it still amazes me how incredibly rude people are.

message 883: by Petra X (new)

Petra X (petra-x) Ann - they were tourists.
Kellie - I do have a blog. Its called Savondujour (soap of the day). I'm not keeping it up now because I have got ADDICTED to Goodreads. Probably I won't have any readers left when I get back there.

message 884: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments I just got back from taking my 9 year old trick or treating. I am so glad he is my last kid! I am so tired! We were riding around my friends neighborhood on the golf cart, and this freak (a man) came up to me and my friend with a mask and a chain saw and scared the crap out of us!! I screamed! Its funny now, but at the time, I was not laughing. I am now going to bed!

message 885: by Beth (new)

Beth Why can you NEVER predict how many trick-or-treaters will show up at your door, so you either run out of candy or have gobs of leftovers that'll just tempt you to eat them and get fat!?

Living on a hill, we usually don't have too many kids come by, about two dozen at the most. And in Colorado Springs, it's usually cold and snowing on Halloween, so that cuts down the traffic even more. But today was warm and sunny, so I thought, "Oh no, I have to buy more candy, because the kids will stay out longer and we'll have more than usual." To reward those who make the climb, we give out full-sized candy bars, so I went out and bought extras.

Well, we had a total of SIX trick-or-treaters and and are now left with 26 candy bars. Sigh!

message 886: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 1000 comments Wow Ann, how long did your kids trick-or-treat for? We have a strict 6-8pm trick-or-treat limit here, there are sirens for it and everything.

message 887: by Ann from S.C. (new)

Ann from S.C. | 1395 comments Oh, we were at a friends and stayed and ate. But there is no time limit here. We stopped at 8:30, but there were still kids out there til around 9:00 or so.

message 888: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) | 1045 comments I kind of miss the trick-or-treaters. I live in a secured apartment building now, so there are no trick-or-treaters. Speaking of my building, they turned the heat on and the air off five days ago. It is still in the 70's for Pete's sake. We have steam heat. We have no control over it. The air is now off-limits. I live on the top floor, which makes it even worse. I have a fan going and the windows open. This will probably be the state of affairs throughout the winter months. It was last year. It is really RIDICULOUS when I have to have fans and windows open to feel cool enough to live comfortably in my apartment.

message 889: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Haha, poor poor Fiona. Ever tried yoga? :-) I used to say it constantly to myself while working in WHSmith and have all the people coming in with a piece of newspaper for ONLY a free cd and getting angry because we hadn't any anymore or because they didn't bring the paper or because they wanted more than one .....

Maybe Lori should put on her CV yoga teacher!!!

Beth, why don't you send the 26 candy bars to Fiona? The poor girl had to give hers away!

message 890: by Jeane (new)

Jeane (icegini) | 4891 comments Hmm...now I keep thinking that when we arrive in Dublin, I do need internet in the place ASAP because I don't want to miss on my daily drug...ouch and all the time I will be losing while going to the airport, airplane...trying not to go and see on GR immediately but arrange things first in the house....

Here is the plan: I tell you all the time from when and till when I want be able to come even near to GR and you all just go and relax, read lots and lots... till I am back.

Oh no, the bells ring, which means it is noon and I am home along with my boyfriend and his brother...and I didn't put the table yet!!!! He will be coming back from church and I am ...on Gr.
Okay, fast check of the other threads and I am gone!!!

message 891: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10621 comments Mod
We went out in the car last nite to trick or treat. There is a curfew here as well (6-8) and we were out for most of it (as was everyone else apparently) since almost no one had outside lights on, so there seemed to be little candy to beg for.... shame, since its such a close and huge nieghborhood..

Since we were out,we werent able to give out any candy... so everything I bought is still here.... Oh dear

message 895: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) Oh Petra, I would have been so furious! I am furious for you!

Fiona - I can't stop laughing. I swear. Funniest post of the day goes to ..... drum roll, please ..... Fiona!

"Please place poo in toilet as well. Not on."

Oh my God, girl, PLEASE write that novel. Chris Moore, watch OUT for this one!

message 896: by [deleted user] (new)

Wow I missed a lot! Off for one day and boom goes the thread.

I have so much Halloween candy. Last year we ran out this year I have almost all of it left. I guess I will be putting on weight since it's candy that I like.

I hated working retail. People are pigs! And the rudeness.

Just to add to Fiona's complaints about bathrooms. Some woman/women at my work seem to get their menstral cycle, urine & fecies all over the toilet. Last I check the toilet sit is for sitting not wiping! I can't imagine that it would get the job done.

message 897: by Paula (new)

Paula | 1098 comments I'm also in Colorado Springs and we never get trick or treaters at our house because it's too far between houses. I decided to get a bag of candy and turn the lights on last night and was excited, we actually had about 8 kids!! Now hubby and I can eat what's left over! LOL
