I remember the title was some kind of bird like eagle or raven or crow i think and it was about a boy who escaped an island where they sent orphans and he had a sidekick but I can't remember his name is he had one and there was a puppeteer that he had a relationship with.........

Awesome series! of the 4 my favorite is "On Fortune's Wheel". It is funny because Wing's of a Falcon is my least fav of the set; so I think if you like it, you will LOVE the others. So for you this could be quadruple find; the one you are looking for and its three great mates!

Man, I've owned the first three of that series since I was in 6th grade, and have never read them...
