Books 3,4 and 5 are where the story really improves. Stick with it - this is a series that only gets better as you read.

The Kate Daniels series is probably my favorite UF series currently. Maybe tied recently by the October Daye series. I do think the later books get better, but I loved the first book, in part because the world was so different from the other UF fantasy worlds. I love the take on the vampires and that Andrews actually pulls from mythology groups other than "faery". She does her research so there are Indian, Russian, and even better - realistic representations of Celtic myth! By the end of book 2 the world is definitely fully established so it makes the later books so much easier to read because you understand the "rules". Don't give up! Keep reading! I don't say that for most series, because I firmly believe in first impressions but I think these books are easy enough to get through and worth it!
I think the series is great. Fab Characters great killers, love those shapeshifters.. Hey what more can you ask for.
Kate Daniels is top 3 for me (surpassed only by The Hollows and Fever as my favorite), if only because I'm not that big on shifters. But it is fabulous.
They are my third favorite U.F after Dresden and October daye.Funny and full of action also has interesting bad guys.
Amazing series and worth the read.I loved Characters and the world she built. Does anyone know when the next Kate book comes out?
Kate 6 isn't out until early 2013 :( We do however have Andrea's book coming out next year, which, if the fantastic snippet we have seen is anything to go by, is going to be amazing!

I love Andrea! I really liked her short story too. It's one of the best I've read for short stories.
I must be seeing things..Did you write 2013???Is Andrea's story another short story or a full novel?
Not seeing things I'm afraid, it really is 2013 for the next Kate book, but Andrea will getting a full novel :)
I actually love this series. I started first novel and thought it was just okay, but by the time I'd finished it, I was thrilled to find the second one was out and couldn't wait to get it. I found that everything grew on me, the world, the magic and the way things worked in the world, especially the characters.
I may just have to reread the series while I wait for 2013! :)
I love the first book and want more of the series. If youre never able to get into it though, it just may not be your style.
IS IT GOOD?It is everything that is good about the world!! It makes me happy to be alive! I have literally humped this book... oh sorry..
I love this series, but yes the first book is rather boring... after that it is awesome!!!!
I've read the first 3 books and 2 novellas from this series in about a week. I'm halfway through the fourth installment...
There is a novella prequel where Kate acts as Saiman's body-guard. There are also books 3.5 and 4.5. If you go to Ilona Andrews's page, it lists the names of the novellas and how to find them, (they're part of anthologies or available as ebooks).
Urban wrote: "The novellas? You mean the Curran POV's? Or are there actually novellas!?I'm so excited."
Not really novellas, but more like short stories in anthologies. This link will also help: http://www.goodreads.com/series/40691...
Those gray series' titles next to the black-text book's titles are links that will lead to you to other book in the series, both canon and non-canon.
For anyone interested in the Kate Daniels series Gordon and Ilona have released a Story featuring Kate and the Beastlord as a Xmas present.... :))Link Below

I loved this series. It's one of my favorites, but I put the first book down twice before I finally read it.
That novella was a lovely holiday gift to fans! Such a classy thing to do, not to mention, a great read!
I am actually very surprised some people aren't into this series. I know people have different opinions, so it's not that. I mean I literally have not met anyone who has disliked this series until I read comments on this group. (Well, amazon may have a few but very little). Personally this is the best urban fantasy series ever written. Two of the series books I actually give 6 stars (my rating system usually goes only to 5 stars) on my blog. They were too dang amazing to put in the category of 5 stars. But for those who don't like this series or Book 1 I hope you find a series that fits you better. Happy Reading!
'Magic Gifts' was a great read. Helped me get my Kate Daniels fix until the next book comes out. Hurry, Hurry!
i have a Qare the books in this series are standalone? or is there a story that starts in book 1 and finish on the last (for comparison - harry potter start at 1 and finish at 7, mercy thompson are pretty much standalone books with only the same env.)
i ask this cause i hate starting a series that is not done yes. it feels like a book missing its last chapters and i prefer waiting for the whole series to come out.
I'm pretty sure there weren't any cliff hangers. Each book just builds on the other, but has it's own story.
Not really a standalone since you can't fully enjoy /understand the latter books without reading the front ones first. (imo)But each book wraps up pretty well and doesn't leave an urgent cliffhanger.
yeah this is what i meant - i don't have to read the next book to finish the story. i would read from the beginning, just don't want to wait to next years book.
you guys sure have it right, if you can make thru book one, you will be a total Magic Fan.BTW, did any of you not like Magic Slays as much as you hoped? I did.

I liked it, but not as much as the others. Not really sure why though. Maybe cause all the tension in her and curran's relationship is gone at this point.
I liked Magic Slays just thought it was too short. I think the relationship between Curran and Kate it still intense even though they are officially together and no one trying to come between them. But I think I understand a bit what you are saying Gin.
Davi wrote: "I only read Magic Bites so far, but I love the characters of Kate and Curran and the sort of love/hate thing that starts brewing between them."Just wait. It gets better. : )
Davi wrote: "I can't wait. Curran's really sexy in my mind's eye. And his attitude? lol."Yep. I don't think you'll be disappointed. : )
