Alrighty everyone... Here's the new challenge, being posted 3 weeks early for your perusal and planning pleasure! :)

There is a rule change for this one to make things easier on everyone - both point reporters and point recorders: Covers will be verified based on the most popular Goodreads edition just like page counts are. So when claiming points for matching cover images - make sure that the most popular Goodreads edition matches what you claim - otherwise points will not be given.

We made this change because finding and linking to a specific book edition was pretty tricky last time, so this alleviates that issue. And it makes it just a little more challenging! ;)

So, without further ado... Here's your June challenge!

Mini-Challenge #2 - June 2011

How this challenge works:
Each book read must touch at least one category task from the list below. Each book can have multiple tasks counted, if eligible, but no duplicates.
============================
Scoring example:
Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell Read Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell
Points -
Time Period: 1800s (+1 point)
Genre: Historical Fiction (+1 point)/ Romance (+1 point)
Locale: Georgia (+1 point)
Themes: War (+1 point)/ Politics (+1 point)
Book Cover: Color Yellow (+1 point)
Random: Published between 1900-1999 (+1 point)/ Family Saga (+1 point)
June Events: Slavery (+1 point)/ Father [Rhett] (+1 point)
Total task points: 11
Page Bonus 10
Total: 21
============================

RULES:
Participants may join at any time during the challenge. The challenge last from June 1st until June 30th. All points must be reported by 11:59pm EST on June 30, 2011 to be counted.

1) Books must be at least 200 pages long. Eligibility for this is determined by the most popular edition on Goodreads. If the most popular edition is 197 pages, it will not count, even if the edition read is 215 pages.

2) ALL books must be completed and points recorded by 11:59p EST on June 30, 2011 to count. Books started prior to June 1st will not be counted.

4) Re-reads and audiobooks are accepted. Audiobook page counts will be determined by the most popular edition on Goodreads.

SCORING:
***Please report all points in the Reporting Points Thread*** (This thread will be opened closer to the challenge start.)

5) To obtain points your book must touch at least one or more of the categories. Each item underneath the category is worth one point unless otherwise noted. Categories and items can be repeated as many times as you want throughout the course of the challenge, but cannot be duplicated for a single book. It is your responsibility to tell us what items came up in your book.

6) Bonus points will be awarded based on the length of each book read, as follows:
200 to 300 pages = 2 bonus points
301 to 500 pages = 4 bonus points
501 to 750 pages = 6 bonus points
751 to 1,000 pages = 8 bonus points
1,000+ = 10 bonus points

Bonus points will be awarded PER BOOK READ.

7) Page length used to determine task bonus points is determined by the most popular edition on Goodreads -- NOT the edition you actually read.

8) Cover requirements will be determined by the most popular edition on Goodreads. (This is a change from the last mini-challenge to make it more consistent for reporting and verification purposes.)

9) HAVE FUN!!!

message 3: by ToniS (new)

ToniS I think you should get super double bonus points if you find a book that DOESN'T fall into any of those categories! Those cover a lot!

On the "duplicates" instruction, does that mean if it's a book about the Beatles being abducted by aliens and forced into slavery that you could only count one of those June Events in that category? Or does it mean if the book had three dogs on the cover that you can only count one for the dog cover point?

LemonLinda (lwilliamson0423) | 626 comments Great - not too many of the books I have read in April/May have fit into the categories this time. I should have a few more in May. But I am excited about the 2nd mini-challenge. Love the flexibility.

Hehe, I know. I wanted to make it flexible enough that people have fun with it... the challenge part is to see how many points you can get. :)

message 7: by Silver (new)

Silver | 8 comments I have a question about the Time Periods, do those have to be Historical Fiction, or could a book written within that time period count? For example could something by Jane Austen be used for 1800s?

message 8: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
The time period has to be the setting not when it was written. But it is OK if it was contemporary when it was written, like Jane Austen would be. Does that help?

Hehe yes that is what I meant, I knew it was the setting but I was not sure if you could use books which were contemporary in the time in which they were written. Thank you.

message 11: by Derrick (new)

Derrick (noetichatter) So, an Oscar Wilde play, for instance, could qualify for

Read a Play
Set in 1800's (maybe)
England
maybe one of the themes

Am I getting it? Does a play have to be 200 pages?

message 12: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Yes, exactly. And yeah, anything you read would have to be 200 pages minimum to qualify. :)

Terrific, thanks. I will have to see what I can come up with to read, since I have joined the club way too late to make any progress on the May Challenge.

Maybe I'll read GWTW, since I have meant to do so for years.

Christy Super excited! I just hope that I have time to participate as much as I want. I was too busy to do much with this last challenge at all. Woohoo for summer reading!

Shay | 86 comments Luckngrace wrote: "OK, I'll show my ignorance. Could someone suggest a bibliographical book? maybe explain the genre?"

Bibliophilia? Love of books. So something like The Book Thief? A Novel Bookstore by Laurence Cossé? There's a Bibliophile mystery series by Kate Carlisle that starts with the book: Homicide In Hardcover.

Maude | 732 comments Bibliography:
(1) A complete or selective list of works compiled upon some common principal, as authorship, subject, place of publication or printer.
(2) A list of source materials that are used or consulted in the preparation of a work or that are referred to in the text.
(3) A branch of library science dealing with the history, physical dscription, comparism and classification of books and other works.

Shay is right on this one - the category is "bibliophilia". So what we'd be looking for is a book that features books or reading in some way.

The Thirteenth Tale
The Shadow of the Wind
The Eyre Affair
Fahrenheit 451

Here's a link to books shelved as "bibliophilia": http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/show?shelf=bibliophilia

message 26: by Shay (last edited Jun 01, 2011 07:00AM) (new)

Shay | 86 comments How much yellow on a cover "counts" as yellow and filling the requirements? Does it have to be this much Dead Reckoning (Sookie Stackhouse, #11) by Charlaine Harris ? Can it be this little? What Happened to Goodbye by Sarah Dessen ?

message 27: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) | 2033 comments Shay, the Dessen book is fine. As long as there is some yellow in the cover we don't care.

Thank you Shay. Great suggestions. So if I pick a book where a book or books are part of the story I should be okay. Thank you too, Maude, for your help.

Cheryl wrote: "Since mystery isn't listed as a genre, could you give me your definition of a thriller?"

It can be really any "main" genre as long as there's action or intrigue that keeps you on your toes and guessing. I don't have a hard and fast criteria, and everyone's idea of a thriller is different. We'll take anything close - mystery with some action and intrigue, horror, psychological craziness...

Little women... probably not. ;)

message 31: by Shay (new)

Shay | 86 comments I usually think of thrillers as different from mysteries in that they are about trying to prevent a crime (or another one) from happening. In a mystery, the purpose is to find the person who committed the crime. For example, a mystery would be to find out who stole a book. A thriller would be to stop the antagonist from using a formula for a poison in the book to poison a city's water supply.

message 32: by Cheryl A (new)

Cheryl A | 1063 comments Thanks, Becky and Shay. I'm a big mystery reader, but particularly like the historical mysteries, so I'm pretty well covered one way or the other.

Rachel G (anplica) | 280 comments I just posted my score for reading Hondo & have a question about it's score. It was originally published in 1953, but the most popular GRs edition is from 2004 (I listened to its audiobook). Does this count for being published between 1900-1999?? Thanks!

message 36: by Becky, Moddess (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) | 3034 comments Mod
Yes Rachel, that should actually be edited on the book page. That will count. ;)
