Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Who were your favorite or least favorite characters and why?

message 2: by Nico (last edited May 02, 2011 01:08PM) (new) - added it

Nico (darkybald) Kvothe is one of my favorit Fantasy characters of all time.
After you read book two you will understand why :P

(view spoiler)

Maggie K | 282 comments oh my :( that only scares me

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Yeah. It certainly didn't make me want to read the next book.

Lindsey | 124 comments Ah, Penny Arcade... that strip is all literally true, but book #2 is more than that. Well, in most places, anyway.

Kvothe is actually one of my least favorite characters... he's arrogant and terribly unaware of his own flaws. Plus, despite some incredible hardships, things work out a little too well for him, mostly through luck rather than skill. Which, I suppose, means he's very well written because he bugs me so much. I'm back and forth on Denna. It's hard to make a call on her because we know so little.

I like Elodin and the various other teachers at the University. Oh, and Abenthy/Ben (yes, I had some serious Obi-Wan Kenobi moments reading it the first time). But I enjoyed the potential of Auri and Kvothe's moneylender (name-edit forthcoming) most; in a way, they show more character growth through the second book than Kvothe does.

Maggie K | 282 comments I really did not care a lot about Kvothe either. I found his personality in the story he was telling too 'cocky' and his present day self, well the whole Bast thing just struck me as odd.

I am hoping he improves after he is done at the university

Jasmine M | 110 comments I loved Kvothe since before I knew his name...in the prologue, speaking about the third kind of silence....well it was the part that got me hooked anyway...i wanted disparately to know the reason for that silence..
another favorite character in this book was Trapis..i feel he deserves an honorable mention here...i've read many books about children living in the streets suffering the way Kvothe did, i always wished in those books for a Trapis... you know... a person who in my opinion represents the goodness in people, when someone feels alone and lonely and afraid and there comes Trapis... i hope i could explain further but this is the limit my language is giving me..
what i'm trying to say...it's not Trapis but what he represents

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Very well said, Jasmine. I liked Trapis, too. And agree that the writing in the prologue was lovely. Really drew me into the story.

Nita (gillnit) I do like Kvothe, but Bast intrigues me the most. Especially after Wise Man's Fear, I wonder who and what he is? My least favorite character is Denna. I don't hate her, I just can't trust her. I feel like she is going to do something like betray Kvothe.

Jamie (scarlettmoonlee) | 13 comments Bast definitely intrigues me too! I haven't yet read the next book, but I am looking forward to hearing more about him.

I also liked Kvothe. By the time I was done with the first book, I felt as if Kvothe was a well-known friend, and I was sad to see him go (by finishing the book).

Ben (benkaboo) How about some of the secondary characters? I really liked Auri and the master that taught naming.

you just know that there has to be a good story there...

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Yes! I'm sure there is.

Joël (jolandaellen) I didn't realy like Kvothe, he's too much talented, cocky and lucky.
And though Bast intrigues me, he's too posessive about Kvothe and shall somehow become like the overripe dessert at the end of an excellent meal with his mysteriousness finally revealed.

I realy liked Elodin, very clever and in a mad way, very wise and sane.

Then there is Simmon who I loved like he was my favorite little brother.

And although I can't put my finger on it exactly, I loved master Kilvin and Deoch too.

Beatrix (smiley_omnomnom) | 23 comments After reading the first book, I love Elodin. So so so so so much. He has a very special place in my heart.
I love how awkward he is. :P

Zach Langley (othrelo) I rather enjoyed the character of Kvothe. The main reason I enjoyed it was because I enjoyed how lucky he was and no matter how much trouble he would get into he used his current knowledge(other than naming the wind) to solve said problem... but I loathed his choice of love interest! I can't stand Denna (woman of many names)

Jessamay Auri was my favourite, closely followed by Elodin. I think Rothfuss has a really good touch with their dialogue, especially Auri. You can tell her mind doesn't quite function in the same way as most people.

Although Kvothe was cocky, I quite liked that he had this fault - yes, he was super talented, but because he was super talented and a teenager, he got himself into all SORTS of trouble. Which is just as it should be.

Denna perplexed me because I don't think I understand her. I guess I can sympathise with Kvothe in that!

Colin Taber I'm in the Kvothe is too cocky camp, and Denna is a bit of a bore. What carried me along was the writing, not so much the characters.

message 19: by Mark (new) - rated it 4 stars

Mark Burns (TheFailedPhilosopher) I liked Abenthy and Elodin... Kvothe and Denna could be a little tiresome at times but they were alright I suppose.

message 20: by [deleted user] (new)

I like Kvothe, acted just as most teenagers would under the circumstances. I guess the only thing that bugged me about him was they way he followed Denna. Denna I thought was a little annoying.
I really liked Elodin, Abenthy, and Auri. All in all, I enjoyed the characters in this book, Rothfuss does a great job making them believable, even in the first person perspective, IMO.

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments Personally, I thought Kvothe did all right with his life considering all he'd been through. My word, the trauma could have turned him into a lot of things, few of them good.

But, like many of you, I liked the side characters a lot - Elodin and Auri in particular.

Iben (gemmanebi) I love Kvothe, he's so flawed and difficult it's brilliant.
Denna I would like to see jump off a cliff in the nearest future. That girl just rubs me the wrong way, can't stand her!

Elodin is amazing. Think I have a wee crush on him :3

Shannon I find Denna less annoying when I imagine she's secretly one of the Chandrian.

Lindsey | 124 comments Shannon wrote: "I find Denna less annoying when I imagine she's secretly one of the Chandrian."

Ha ha, I had a few moments like that reading some of her parts of the book (it also helps to assume that she'll eventually betray Kvothe somehow). I'm on the fence about her as a character because I feel that Kvothe presents a biased view and that we, the readers, really don't know her yet.

Sandra (sleo) | 1913 comments I definitely think Denna is at least a key to the Chandrians. And clearly Kvothe has somehting special about him that they didn't kill him when they destroyed everyone else in his troupe.

message 26: by John (new) - rated it 4 stars

John Wow, not a single mention of Ambrose. Ambrose may have been asking for it, but I felt it was Kvothe's biggest mistake that he could never leave well enough alone. While we don't yet know the whole story, we do find out that his feud with Ambrose will lead to Kvothe's expulsion from the University.

I wanted to like Elodin, but just could not yet. Maybe if we learn more about him in the next book. I don't think Denna is good for Kvothe either, but it seems he will not see that until it is too late. I am looking forward to finding out more about Auri!

That may be why they mentioning the way he changes almost completely when doing things of importance. They mention the eyes changing colour several times.

Michele | 85 comments Denna certainly seems important, probably in more ways than one. As some link to the Chandrian, and as Kvothe's love--unrequited or not. She does kind of annoy me, even though I do feel sorry for her. It is spooky how she just shows up randomly. It makes it feel like all of Kvothe's universe is about as big as a university town.

Ambrose is a brat, but he is a somewhat predictable brat. I can't really feel strongly about him. I like Elodin. He's a nut, but I like him. He seems something others do not.

Brenda ╰☆╮ (brnda) | 1494 comments Though in this book he doesn't have a big part, I'm fascinated by Bast.

Kvothe is not the most mature in this and I think Bast is helping him grow. I am looking forward to the rest of the series. (Yup...a bit behind;)
