Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) Yuliya wrote: "but who can tell me what is the picture on the cover of Middlesex? it is the picture of what?????"

It's not a picture of anything, Yuliya. It's a collage of images that reflect central plot points - immigration, city growth/troubles, teen experience. They are "loosely" tied together with what seems to be smoke ... like the ethereal threads of memory.

But all that is just off the top of my head.

Basically .. don't over-think the cover. Just read the book. LOL

message 28704: by Gea (new)

Gea I'm reading Warm Bodies (Warm Bodies, #1) by Isaac Marion by Isaac Marion. It is about a zombie who falls in love. It is surprisingly romantic and sweet despite the gruesome violence. Isaac Marion is a superb writer and his female character, Julie, is wonderful. She's a shining beacon of dreams in a decaying world.

Brenda Klaassen (librarymom23) I am currently reading The Crown.

message 28706: by Karen M (new)

Karen M | 1956 comments I've been reading The Perfect Storm: A True Story of Men Against the Sea and I am surprised how much I am enjoying it even with all the technical information supplied. I like it that unlike the movie, Sebastian Junger did not attempt to create what was actually happening on the Andrea Gail other than what was radioed and how similar situations are handled typically.

Allison, that is one of my all-time favorite books. Hope you are enjoying it.

I'm currently in the middle of Lady of Ashes, a mystery featuring a female undertaker in Victorian London.

message 28709: by Danna (new)

Danna Pompeii by Robert Harris , I have heard it is a great window to the ancient world.
Anne of Avonlea (Anne of Green Gables, #2) by L.M. Montgomery , because I have never read the series!

message 28710: by Wendy (new)

Wendy Barlow | 101 comments I seem to have been in a bit of a reading lull this month and have yet to finish Moby-Dick and The Etymologicon: A Circular Stroll through the Hidden Connections of the English Language, so thought i would carry on with the game of thrones series and am racing through A Dance with Dragons: Dreams and Dust.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) Finished listening to the audio of Life of Pi by Yann Martel – 4****

I had previously read this book in 2003. In March 2013 I listened to the audio performed by Jeff Woodman. He does a marvelous job. I was immediately and completely drawn into Pi’s story.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) Finished the memoir When a Crocodile Eats the Sun by Peter Godwin – 3.5***

There really is no way for Godwin to tell his family story without also telling the story of Zimbabwe. I think he does a respectable job of journalistic reporting on the country and its issues, while still giving us a very personal and intimate look at his relationship with his parents and his home.

Patricia | 185 comments I finished A Dance With Dragons by George R.R. Martin. I've enjoyed reading the series and watching it on HBO. It's going to be a long time though until the 6th book is published! Boo!

Now I'm reading The Monster of Florence by Douglas Preston.

message 28714: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer | 239 comments I am reading The Accursed by Joyce Carol Oates . A little odd of a supernatural tale but it is Joyce Carol Oates. . . and I am enjoying it immensely!

message 28715: by Tanya (new)

Tanya (kate47) | 59 comments I am currently reading Curfewed NightbyBasharat Peer. It is an amazing book. Prior to this I read Nadeem Aslam'The Blind Mans Garden and also The Wasted Vigil. I think writers such as Basharat Peer are so important writing personal stories from brutal conflicts. He gives us much to think about. Recently I read a quote by Nadeem Aslam 'Good writers don't tell us what to think but what to think about'.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) Buffalo West Wing (A White House Chef Mystery, #4) by Julie Hyzy
Buffalo West Wing - Julie Hyzy
3***

Olivia (“Ollie”) Paras is the first female White House Executive Chef. Married to her job, she is both in the background and at the center of events that affect not only the First Family but the country.

This is the 4th in the White House Chef series, and a mildly entertaining “mystery with recipes” that blends cooking and suspense. Except … there’s not all that much focus on food, and there isn’t much plot. There is a fair amount of focus placed on old (or potential) romances, but these aren’t fully explored either. I haven’t read any of the other books in the series, and I think this worked reasonably well as a stand-alone. Hyzy kept me turning pages, which, for me, is the number one criterion for this genre.

message 28718: by Scott (new)

Scott | 257 comments Finished Moonlight Mile yesterday. I hated to see this series end.

Now I'm reading Red: My Uncensored Life in Rock. I'm curious to see his side of the Van Halen relationship.

Guy Portman (guyportman) The Men Who Stare at Goats by Jon Ronson. I've found it disappointing so far.

message 28720: by Patricia (new)

message 28722: by Jocelyne (new)

Jocelyne Lebon | 70 comments So many books, such little time. I am reading Proust's third volume, the Guermantes Way, and when it wrinkles my brain too much, I switch to Gilead by Marilyn Robinson.

message 28723: by Book Concierge (new)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) Finished re-reading a childhood favorite: Brighty Of The Grand Canyon by Marguerite Henry – 4**** (Illustrated by Wesley Dennis)

Reading it as an adult, I can definitely see why I loved Henry’s books as a child. There are some darker moments in this book, but Henry keeps the violence to a bare minimum and uses humor and joy to temper any negative images.

Thanks.

Linda Van Wert (lindalawsonvanwert) | 3 comments Proof of Heaven

A SCIENTIST’S CASE FOR THE AFTERLIFE Thousands of people have had near-death experiences, but scientists have argued that they are impossible. Dr. Eben Alexander was one of those scientists. A highly trained neurosurgeon, Alexander knew that NDEs feel real, but are simply fantasies produced by brains under extreme stress.

Then, Dr. Alexander’s own brain was attacked by a rare illness. The part of the brain that controls thought and emotion—and in essence makes us human—shut down completely. For seven days he lay in a coma. Then, as his doctors considered stopping treatment, Alexander’s eyes popped open. He had come back.

Jocelyne Lebon | 70 comments I can't wait to read this book. I have requested it from the library and there is such a long waiting list that I will probably have a chance to visit the afterlife and come back before I can get my hands on it. I will have to buy it.

message 28732: by Linda (new)

Linda Van Wert (lindalawsonvanwert) | 3 comments I never have time to go to the library, so I browse "Goodreads" and download onto my "Nook". If it is lendable and you have a "Nook" I can lend it to you. :)

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) Finished The Long Quiche Goodbye by Avery Aames – 1*

This has all the ingredients for a promising cozy mystery set-up, but the writing is not up to par. I give it 1 star just because she has a good idea. Link to my full review: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...

B (btezeno) | 1 comments I'm reading "Bless Me Ultima". I wanted to read the book before watching the film.

message 28738: by Jocelyne (new)

Jocelyne Lebon | 70 comments I'd love to hear what you have to say after you read the book and see the film. Sometimes the film is disappointing, as was my experience with Corelli's Mandolin (loved the book, but the movie was trash). I love the movie "Out of Africa" but when I read the book, although I liked it, it had hardly any mention of the romance.

Aaron Thibeault (thebookreporter) | 76 comments Just finished reading the new book by Jonah Berger called Contagious: Why Things Catch On. The book explores social pandemics and brings a scientific approach to understanding why things go viral. It's a fun and interesting read about an intriguing topic. I've written a full executive summary available here: http://newbooksinbrief.com/2013/04/03...

Cheers,

Jocelyne Lebon | 70 comments I am reading several books at a time, which I usually do, but this time since one of them is Proust, I am really driving myself crazy. I would not feel so much pressure if I had not have had to wait so long for the books that I finally got from the library (and had ordered before starting Proust) and I would hate to have to return them unread. One of them is Climates, a French classic, and the other Proof of Heaven.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) Finished reading Silver Sparrow by Tayari Jones – 4****

Liz (busy91) The two fiction books I'm currently reading are

Faith which I am having trouble finishing. I can't tell you why, it just isn't doing anything for me.

I am also reading Heft. This one is much better.
