I'm reading Backstabbers, Crazed Geniuses, and Animals We Hate, which is a collection of short essays about topical people and assorted other highbrow pop culture phenomena from Slate magazine. It's an amusing and light-hearted read, which I definitely needed after reading Hannah Arendt's Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil.
Just finished my Give Away read fom GoodReads that was sitting in my mail-box when I returned from Pa. A nice unexpected Christmas present and a very touching story called eleanor & park.
I just finished Sacre Bleu: A Comedy d'Art by Christopher Moore. I'd never read anything my Moore but found this to be wildly entertaining, although a bit outrageous. Now I'm reading Dinner with Lenny: The Last Long Interview with Leonard Bernstein by Jonathan Cott. Bernstein was such an eccentric character, so I'm sure this will be interesting.
Found eleanor & park in my mailbox coming home after Christmas break. A nice present from Goodreads giveaway as wellas a timely and touching read. Get your kleenex ready people!

Brianne: At top of the page, click on "explore," then scroll down to "giveaways" to see what is available. You can search by most recently added, ending soon, or by genre. Good luck!
I just finished the last collection of poems by Shel Silverstein (author of Where the Sidewalk Ends and The Giving Tree). It's called Every Thing on It. It has some very beautiful moments in there (as well as some zany ones).
Finished eleanor & park and wrote the review. This the fifth book I've won in two years, and it sure is fun. I see Heather answered your question,so give it a shot. It's definitely worth your while. I certainly have had better luck with it than lottery tickets!Started the Dovekeepers by Alice Hoffman. Excellent. her style of writing especially suits this story.
I finished Same Kind of Different as Me by Ron Hall and am returning to the Game of Thrones series with #4: A Feast for Crows by George R.R. Martin.
I've just finished Tom Pollock's "The City's Son" (very good) and next up is Shirley Jackson's "We Have Always Lived In The Castle", which has been recommended to me.
I just finished Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers. So good! I recommend everyone read it! Now I am reading Castle by J. Robert Lennon. I'm looking forward to it.
Paula wrote: "Leonardo wrote: "The Medical Book: From Witch Doctors to Robot Surgeons, 250 Milestones in the History of Medicine, by Clifford Pickover. So far this is a really great book with excellent images on..."I was a good read, Paula. You should check it out.

I just finished Backstabbers, Crazed Geniuses, and Animals We Hate, which is a collection of short pieces from Slate magazine analyzing whatever is topical at the time (but taking a long view of it, so it's not tied to the time period). There were short features on Martha Stewart, Dunkin' Donuts, Scooby Doo, Antonin Scalia, salmon and a few dozen other topics. It was amusing and fun. The structure (about 3-4 pages for each subject) makes this a good stop-and-go book. My next book is Sarah Vowell's Radio On: A Listener's Diary, which is a diary of a year she spent listening to and ruminating about the radio. It's definitely a nostalgia trip for me. It's about 1995 so the Republican take over is talked about as well as the rise of conservative talk shows. Vowell also spends a lot of time mourning Kurt Cobain's suicide of the year before. It's hard to believe that this was 18 years ago.
I'm still working through The Gettysburg Campaign: A Study in Command by Edwin B. Coddington, which is very good, but I'm taking my time with it. I'm also reading Wildwood Dancing by Juliet Marillier, which is one of my favorite books.
Just started Jamaica Inn by Daphne Dumaurier. A lot of mixed reviews on this one, but I loved Rebecca so here goes!
I finished
by Sanjay Gupta yesterday morning. I really enjoyed this novel. It is actually very similar to ER. At times during reading this book, I did feel like I was reading an ER script just with different characters! The plot was interesting, gripping, well-developed and well-written. The medical lingo was easy to understand. The characters were interesting, vivid and well-developed. My only gripe about this novel was that I would have liked to learn more about what happened to the characters at the end of the novel. Now I'm a few chapters into
by Liane Moriarty. Great book so far!
Matthew wrote: "About to start The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. I've wanted to read it for a long time, but never got around to it for whatever reason."Matthew, The Handmaid's Tale is one of my favorite books - hope you like it!
I'm still reading
and am enjoying it. I didn't have alot of reading time over the holidays but am looking forward to getting back to my books! Happy New Year to everyone.
Claire wrote: "I'm still reading

I started Monster Hunter International over the holiday. I haven't gotten very far but I'm really enjoying it.
Some good reads that I've finished recently and recommend include Rainwater, Learning to Swim, and The Bartender's Tale. I'm currently reading the very funny memoir, Enslaved by Ducks, and next on my list is a mystery by one of my favorite authors, A Trick of the Light.
I'm reading MERRY CHRISTMAS ALEX CROSS which is pretty good so far, and I am reading A CHRISTMAS CARROLL for my face to face book club. It's surprisingly good!
Is A Christmas Carroll like that Hallmark or Lifetime movie that was on during the holidays? I liked that movie
After finishing
,
and
, which were all lovely reads, I decided to go classic and non-fiction. My classic choice is a re-read of
which is still wonderful but unfortunately my non-fiction choice is
which I am determined to finish because although I am pushing myself to read it, it is interesting at times.
Paula wrote: "Getting ready to start Blackberry Winter by Sarah Jio. Can't wait."That is a book that is on my list to read in 2013! Hope you enjoy it.
I've finished reading
by Liane Moriarty. I really loved this novel! The plot was very intriguing, compelling and well-written with an interesting and unique premise. I loved the author's writing style. The story was very funny and some parts were quite touching and made me want to cry. The characters were all well-developed, vivid and believable. I found it easy to relate to Alice and the other characters. I was unable to put this book down for long. I was desperate to find out what was going to happen next! I gave it 5 stars! My full view is here: http://www.goodreads.com/review/show/...
Now I'm about to start
by Kate Alcott.
Nearing the end of Fairest by Chanda Hahn and debating which one to start next. Either Crown of Embers by Rae Carson or Damaged: The Heartbreaking Story if a Forgotten Child by Cathy Glass.
I'm about halfway through a Trick of light by Louise Penny. This is the second book of hers I've read because Of the positive reviews on GoodReads, and yeah, I like this novel too.
Marilyn wrote: "I'm reading Behind The Beautiful Forevers by Katherine Boo; I'll probably be finished by tonight!"I was thinking of reading this book, Marilyn. Are you liking it?
I'm reading Spin: Greatest Hits: 25 Years of Heretics, Heroes, and the New Rock 'n' Roll, a collection of articles from Spin magazine.
I'm currently reading; Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebehe, Sometimes Lake by Sandy Bonny, Whitethorn Woods by Meave Binchy, and The Beginning of Spring by Penelope Fitzgerald.
I'm reading Mating by Norman Rush, National Book Award winner in 1991, and 100 pages in, I can easily understand why it won. . . excellent so far.
