I finished The Pillars of the Earth and absolutely loved it! It went very fast despite the fact that it's close to 1000 pages. Now I'm starting Book of Shadows by Alexandra Sokoloff.

Oooooh, that sounds interesting! My family has vacationed in the Outer Banks ever since I was a little girl and we used to go to the "Lost Colony" play every summer (http://www.thelostcolony.org/)--I'm definitely adding this book to my TBR list!
ETA: just read your second post...maybe not.
E(again)TA: Ew, just read some GR reviews of this book. Definitely will not add to TBR list--I detest poor writing. Dang.

I really wanted to like it but it just wasn't for me. I'll look for something else though, I'd like to read about it.
Mary, I'm really bummed that it wasn't written in a way to make it interesting. She asks a lot of questions and then just makes conjectures, there's no factual evidence. Oh well, maybe something else will come up on the subject and be better.
I've gone a bit crazy since I got a Kindle for Christmas. Picked up quite a few books but I'm currently working on The Okapi Promise, by Paula Boer. Haven't gotten very far though because I'm still at my sisters until tomorrow.

I almost finished girl with a pearl earring, still reading in Sense and Sensibility/Breaking Down and a few books with shorter stories/coloms
I just finished Wizard and Glass. This is really an epic story.I think I'm going to read Catching Fire next.
I need something lighter to read and by that I mean about 400 pages lighter.
I'm reading A Clash of Kings by George R.R. Martin. It's the second in a series and I am really loving it. But it's stressing me out because really awful things are happening to some of my favorite characters right now.
Very interesting about the Roanoke story. My family comes from coastal northern NC, and there is a story come down on my mother's side of a very dry year in the swamps when hunters (great or great-great uncles of her father I believe) could go further on land than they ever remembered going before. Supposedly they found a tombstone that said Virginia Dare on it. Probably apocryphal but still fascinating to me.

I loved this series! Enjoy :)

My oldest son is the one who got me interested in this subject and now I have to find out more. LOL
Christy, I think it is only a matter of weeks before I start A Game of Thrones. I've had it on my shelf for a couple years now, and with the new TV series coming out I'm itching to start it. Only draw back is I'm not sure I'm ready for such a dense read right now. Glad to see someone who likes it though, helps move me closer to picking it up!

I really enjoyed the first one, this one is ok so far, but it's not really pulling me in like the first one did. I am only about 50 pages into it though (before I fell asleep!) so hopefully it will pick up! I will still read her next two books regardless though.
I'm reading "The Curse of the Wendigo" by Rick Yancey. So far it's not as engaging as Yancey's "Monstrumologist" which my HS students and I really liked.

Sorry to hear its a disappointment, Paula. It does sound like a good book by the title, but guess I'll pass this one by.
Currently I am reading
I am taking a short break from English history & the Tudors. This book is a real page turner. It is set in Poland and follows a family of Jews trying to survive against first the Russians then the Nazis. I do not know if I would be as strong as Clara
I just stated Son of a Witch. I seriously loved Wicked, so I have high hopes. There's a major snowstorm in New England- there's nothing better than getting cozy with a book while you're snowed in!
I finished Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking-Glass and now I'm starting Everything That Rises Must Converge. I have heard good things about this one so I am really excited!
I am just finishing Port Mortuary by Patricia Cornwell and then I will be starting Impeding Justice by fellow indie author, Mel Comley.

I keep looking for the next one cuz surely it doesn't end here.
I started The Okapi Promise before Christmas but got sidetracked by all the festivities when I went to my sisters. Hoping to jump back into it.

They are VERY long and involved books, but such good reads. It almost reads like historical fiction with a little fantasy thrown in.
i started The Privileges yesterday. i've heard mixed thoughts on this, and as i'm only 60 pages in, i'm not sure what to think just yet.
I'm reading The Lady in Red: An Eighteenth-Century Tale of Sex, Scandal, and Divorce. It's very well-written and not the least bit dry, which some historical non-fiction can be.
Jason wrote: "S.Leighanne wrote: "I started The Fellowship of the Ring today, for a book club. I'm STILL not done with The Pillars of the Earth like I wanted to be. I don't even know if I..."I am on page 809 of Pillars of the Earth, LOVING IT
still working on Scotland: The Story of a Nation. It is very entertaining and fun to read, which is good considering the size! It isn't exactly the story of Scotland - it isn't about the land and people really. It is exclusively about the powerful nobles, a few very prominent others, and the royal family. So, a political history. I had really no idea Scottish history was this wild.
I'm currently reading The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. Going pretty well so far - just trying to decide which location in it to count towards my "round the world in 80 books" challenge!
Jo wrote: "Dana What did you think of Handling the Undead Ta..."I liked it a lot, but not as horror. This is not the classic zombie story, much as Let The Right One In is not classic vampire. It is a touching story about death and dealing with loss.
I finished Book of Shadows by Alexandra Sokoloff and I thought it was okay. Great premise, but I found the execution a bit lacking. Now I'm going to start The Sinner by Petra Hammesfahr.
Yesterday I finished Sinclair's
The Jungle
. I have to say I was a little disappointed because by halfway I was thinking I'd found a 5-star book but the last 100 pages just didn't work for me. Next I'm going with Shepard's
Great Dream of Heaven: Stories
.
I'm reading Protect And Defend which is a typical thriller but I'm enjoying it and desperately needed something easy to pull me back to reading after a holiday slump.
Saffina wrote: "I am just finishing Port Mortuary by Patricia Cornwell and then I will be starting Impeding Justice by fellow indie author, Mel Comley."Ooooooh, sweet old patricia cornwell books. :-)
Finished The Name of the Rose: Including Postscript and starting Sword of the Prophet: The Mahdi of Sudan and the Death of General Gordon
I finished Catching Fire and this morning I started reading Monster. It has a really good beginning and has already sucked me in.
Jeane wrote:Ooooooh, sweet old patricia cornwell book..."The old Patricia Cornwell books were so nice!

I am starting to get into her newer Scarptta's again too and so glad that the feeling is coming back, because this are my feel good books!
I just finished The Choice I didn't think that I would finish it nearly this fast! I liked it, it wasn't his best book, in my opinion, but it was still good. I think it was dragging on a bit in the end, or that it could've went differently.. i don't know, but still overall a good book. I'm not sure what im going to read next.
I recently finished The Sealed Letter and absolutely LOVED it. I am enjoying War and Peace as I continue to read. Also I received my copy of Nicholas and Alexandra by Robert K. Massie can't wait to drive right in :o)
I decided to start The Pilot's Wife. It's been on my shelf for awhile. It got so many mixed reviews and the other two books I started reading I couldn't get past 10 pages.. I just wasn't into them.. I enjoyed the first couple pages, now I am getting bored at 50 pages in, from the reviews I read on here the last quarter of the book is better so i am going to stick with it.
I have another Anita Shreve book on my shelf Light on Snow. I haven't heard much of anything about that one though.
Eeking my way through Little Dorrit, slowly listening to The Pillars of the Earth,
and working on One Day(weekly book club)
I finished The Sinner by Petra Hammesfahr and didn't like it at all. It was just too jumbled. I don't know whether to blame the author or the translator... Now I'm reading One for the Money.
