A Salty Piece of Land is not historical it is silly, but I needed something light. It is about a cowboy and a 101 year old woman sea captain take it from there.

I am reading Flowers for Algernon. I am one quarter of the way through the book. I have 1984 by George Orwell in line for when I am finished with this book. I would love for some people who are also reading this book to join in discussions with me about the book.
ScottK wrote: "I am still reading the Alexandria Link by Steve Berry ( cuz I have been sick and keep falling to sleep reading it) It so far is a good book but I wouldn't put it as hIgh as his last one."I liked this book
Sherrie wrote: "Hi everyone,Just finished Angels & Demons by Dan Brown. I am now reading Book of The Dead by Patricia Cornwell.
Next will be one of these:
The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls
Angels Fall by Nora..."
Glass Castle was very good. Not a "up" book, but if you ever questioned if you were a good parent - here would bew your backdrop.

I loved Blindness. Didin't see the movie, but the book is great for discussion
Bridgit wrote: "The Dresden Files. Did anyone see it? It was cancelled after one season, so I dont have high hopes...but I always pray for another Firefly or Arrested Development where the show is just too good for the general public to realize and THAT is why it was cancelled... sigh... "I really enjoyed this show! My boyfriend and I watched the whole season a month or so ago and had a great time with it.
The only episode that is absolutely AWFUL is the "pilot" that they stuck in as episode... 8? I think it was. You go along for half a season, and BAM, there's this unpolished TURD of an episode that is NOTHING like any of the other episodes! I would actually recommend skipping it, if you are going to watch. :P
They do change a few things in the show as compared to the books (this will be immediately obvious to you when you see "Bob" ;)). But it was a fun season and it's a shame it was canceled!
EDIT: Yes, it was indeed Episode 8 "Storm Front". Either skip this episode COMPLETELY or watch it knowing it's totally "wack" :P

I've started The Passage by Cronin. This one's gonna take awhile,it's 700 and more pages. So far I'm enjoying the character development-e-mails from the scientist, dialect of the prisoner, and rambling narratives from the heartbroken man who will lead the expedition.

I started a group called "Book Club for Growth" in the books and literature/literature and fiction category and section if you would like to join and invite others that you know. Right now it is just me and I am currently reading Flowers for Algernon but when I get back from my trip on Wednesday we can talk about starting 1984, if you would like.
I'm reading a biography of Einstein, and then, to make me feel like less of a dolt, Water for Elephants. I'll be interested in discussing that one in a few days when I'm finished.
Finished McCann's This Side Of Brightness; despite the low expectations, I was pretty disappointed. Either McCann is not for me, or I should have just read Let The Great World Spin.Next I'll be re-reading the Stephen King & Peter Straub collaboration, The Talisman .
Well Susanna I hope Let the Great World Spin turns out to be a better book because I just started it!
I am currently reading Christopher Reich's Rules of Deception and I just started reading Arturo Perez-Reverte's The Fencing Master.
Lori Ann wrote: "Well Susanna I hope Let the Great World Spin turns out to be a better book because I just started it!"I sure hope so, Lori Ann :)
I finished The Girl Who Played with Fire last night (actually 6am today) and am already mourning the thought that there is only one more book in the Stieg Larsson trilogy.Later today I'll start a book that I've wanted to read for some time - just had to wait for it to be a Kindle edition - Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok. I can't wait to delve into it!
I feel like I'm currently reading every book under the sun. I'm reading The Mill on the Floss, Atlas Shrugged, and Nine Horses. I'm also re-reading The Count of Monte Cristo, Winter's Tale, and The Tao of Pooh. The stack of books to be read (or re-read) next to my bed is getting to be about level with my mattress. I think I need to start reading faster...
Looking through some of the posts in this thread I've already added around 15 books to my list. This group is the best kind of bad influence...
I also just finished THE WEIGHT OF SILENCE and am still reading THE GIRL WHO KICKED THE HORNETS NEST. It is getting better.
F1Wild wrote: "I finished The Girl Who Played with Fire last night (actually 6am today) and am already mourning the thought that there is only one more book in the Stieg Larsson tr..."You need to go on and read The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest as soon as possible. It's really a continuation to TGWPWF. I had a couple of months in between, and found it difficult to pick up all the characters and plots again. That said, I'm loving the 3rd book.
Katie wrote: "You need to go on and read The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest as soon as possible...a continuation to TGWPWF. I figured a book in between would solve that, but keeping the characters in Larsson's still pretty fresh.
Thanks for the recommendation for ...Hornet's Nest!
Finished Blindness and started Gunpowder by Joe Hill, liking it so far, about 10 pages in, but it isn't that long a novella.
Betsy wrote: "Rachael wrote: "I'm currently reading Eat, Pray, Love."Please tell me what you think of this when you are done. It gets alot of press but I just found it so-so after awhile."
Funny, I also felt that way about Eat, Pray, Love. Italy was awesome, but somewhere in India I just stopped caring
I just finished The Time Traveler's Wifeand really enjoyed it. I wept like a baby through most of the end bits, I was completely swept away by the book and felt bereft when it was done. I am now reading I Am the Messenger, and am getting sucked right in.
Joel wrote: "Jealous! HA! I've seen the books you did manage to bring home... ;)I'M jealous you got The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore. I dont think it comes out until the fall."
So I finished Storm Front last night and really enjoyed it. I will definitely be picking up some more in the series - especially as I hear the first book is the worst and the series really takes off in later books.
Based on Joel's comments when seeing my stash from BEA, I have decided to start in on The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore. This is supposedly due out in February 2011. I'd never heard of it, but thought I would give it a shot.
I am only on page 30 or something, but WOW. I AM BLOWN AWAY. I really don't say this lightly. The writing in this is masterful. Just in the first few pages I already have found at least a dozen parts I want to reread and quote. This book has the potential to be one of my favorite books ever. I am giddy just thinking about getting back to it when I finish work today.
Definitely add this to your TBR's people!
I'm starting (at 119 pages so far) The Passage by Justin Cronin.Excellent with a series of character vingettes that keep you burning through the pages into this dystopian world.
i set aside The Calligrapher's Daughter for the time being. i needed to get some space and then go back to it. as a quick read in the interim, i picked up Love the One You're With from Emily Giffin on recommendation from a co-worker. i'm about 95% enjoying it; the other 5% of me wonders why the character doesn't do one of the 2 things i think are obvious in her situation. of course, i'm only about 100 pages in, so we'll see if my opinion changes any.
Alex wrote: "It's freakin' awesome, Claire. :)"oops, I meant Brave New World is what I ordered - is this good as well? (hope so).
I keep starting books, then finding something else and starting that and so on, lol. So I am reading:High Noon, by Nora Roberts
The Scent of Sake, by Joyce Lebra
Certain Girls, by Jennifer Weiner
It's awesome! I am about 3/4 of the way through, I highly recommend it. It's a fast pace and goes through several decades, which I love.
Mona wrote: "Jenn: I love world fiction so I checked out
here and added it to my list. How is it so far?"I read an "Advance Readers Copy" last year and found the book very enjoyable.
Alex wrote: "Rosabelle, Pirate Latitudes was just okay, huh? Bummer. I've been sorta tempted by that one."Alex, yes, it was just okay. Not as good as his other books that I've read so far. It gets better the second half of the book. I imagine it would be have been better watching the movie if it gets made into a movie :)
I am currently reading The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafon which continues to amaze me as I get further and further into the book . And re-reading neil gaiman's American God just because its been a really long time since I've read it :)
I am reading finally Wolf Hall. I have had this on my shelf almost a year so decided the time was ripe for it.
I am currently reading The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson, the second book in the Millenium series. I'm on about 28 pages in.. hopefully the second book is as good or even better than the first one :)
I finished The Age of Innocence and really loved it. Can't wait to try another Wharton out. I'm going to start The Tipping Point today on audio and I'm about 50 pages into Doomsday Book and loving it.
