Somehow, I missed this one! Put it on the TBR to read soon!

KarenLee I'm currently reading Starting Over by Laura Rittenhouse. It's on the kindle app on my iPhone. It will fulfill Australia for my AtWi80 Books challenge.

I am really enjoying it and love the writing style. I'll be picking up The Blind Assassin at the library and hope to start it.

The Historian is on my Kindle also. I needed to take a break. However, I will pick it up again next week. I leave for AZ on Tuesday, and will not take books with me unless they are on my iPhone.

I just finished Let the Right One In! It's very good. Have you seen the movie? The movie is actually also quite good though not as good as the book of course.

I'm reading Wench: A Novel and am not loving it.

message 18455: by Kari (new)

Kari (kiwibee) I'm currently reading Dead Witch Walking, because it was free on the Kindle when the author's latest book came out. It's kind of slow going so far, but it appears to be picking up.

Free Kindle books are SO addictive, because they really do run the gamut from terrible to terrific. I never know what I'm going to get when I download one!

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I just started a book called Greywalker by Kat Richardson and it literally starts out with a bang, and in the main character get's banged in the head by a guy she is investigating. It is pretty good so far.

Alisha Marie (endlesswonderofreading) | 715 comments I finished Mathilda Savitch last night and I liked it. I thought it was quirky and a little bittersweet. It was one of my favorite Goodreads wins. Now I'm reading Body Double by Tess Gerritsen. Since I just got a used Kindle, I felt that a page-turning thriller would be the best thing for me to read as I'm getting used to it.

I enjoyed Firefly Lane. I think the author really has a gift of bringing you so into the story that you become attached to the characters.

I am readingThe Three Weissmanns of Westport: A Novel by Cathleen Schine. It started out pretty good but is slowing down a bit.

I'm not sure, Chantelle. I'm not especially drawn to any of the characters, they all seem kind of superficial. The historical details are vague and don't feel authentic. Maybe I'm just not in the mood for this kind of book. I do plan to finish it, though I've set it aside for some nonfiction--Not Without Peril: 150 Years of Misadventure on the Presidential Range of New Hampshire.

Dana * (queenofegypt) I just finished Knit the Season: A Friday Night Knitting Club Novel, I have loved this series, even though it is totally out of my usual genre. I love knitting, if you can believe that is why I picked it up. Good Chick Lit.
I am on chapter 10 of Horns on cd and it is great. Joe Hill is a really great author, I think he may take over when his dad quits writing. I also just finished The Brief History of the Dead which I would recommend to anyone interested in views of the 'afterlife'.

I think I will also start Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us

I'm so glad that you stuck with TGWTDT, the next two books are soooo much better. I'm so excited for you.

message 18483: by Petra (new)

Petra Dana, I really enjoyed Child 44 as well. It was a surprise find for me as I found it on a Sale table at a bookstore and had never heard of it before.
I started reading Cujo the other day. In high school, I read The Stand and loved it and started reading other King books, which progressively got worse, ending with Pet Sematary. I never read another King book. Lately, though, his books seem to be popping up again and I thought I'd give them a try once more. I remember Cujo being mentioned fairly often and thought I'd try it. So far, it's interesting.
I'm also listening to Haunted on my commutes. Interesting......gross in parts.......not sure what to think of it yet......
Lastly, I'm reading Sweetheart in the evening, right before bed. It's the second book in a series featuring a really cold, brutal serial killer named Gretchen Lowell. I'm enjoying this series.

Sasha How's The Devil in the White City going for you, Dessa? I liked that book. It's a mark of Larson's writing skill that I ended up enjoying the parts about the Fair more than the parts about the serial killer.

I was psyched to discover that Franklin Park, up the street from my condo in Boston, was also designed by Frederick Olmsted. I walk my dog there every day. Nice place.

Melissa Ames | 8 comments Just finished reading Lady Chatterley's Lover, which I really enjoyed. Trying to decide what to start on next; Tiger! Tiger!, Rich Girl, Poor Girl, American Psycho, or Catch-22. Any suggestions??

message 18487: by Sasha (new)

Sasha Oh man, Melissa, American Psycho is so boring. Except for the gross parts, which are so gross. That book does not work for me.

Lady Chatterley's Lover is good, huh? It's kinda cool that you read that; it's one of those things that everyone sorta mildly giggles about, but no one's actually read. I should do that too.

I hope the dirty parts aren't disappointing, is all.

I loved Catch-22, but over on the Thread of Dire Judgment I've learned that many others do not love it. Don't know the other two.

message 18488: by Melissa (new)

Melissa Ames | 8 comments Alex, there's frequent use of four letter expletives, and there's some frank, open discussion about sex, which somewhat surprised me, considering when it was written. i first heard of it when i was really young, watching a Carry On Christmas video, then again a couple of years ago when Lady Chatterley was reviewed in Sight & Sound magazine. the story appealed to me (what does that say about me?!! lol) and so when i saw it in a charity shop i just had to buy it!

Just found a cinema ticket stub in American Psycho, from September 2008, marking page 6. Looks like i struggled to get into it back then, might hold off for a little while on that one, at least until i've got the time and patience to dedicate!

thanks for the advice!

Well, there are still World's Fairs, but they don't get much attention.

Sometimes I think Disney's Epcot is like a permanent world's fair setup, though.

It is really hard to stick with all the name dropping in American Psycho. They want you to fully understand how superficial the character is and how it is warping his mind. This is one that may disappoint in the end if you are struggling with it now. I liked it, and the movie. But it's not one I normally recommend.

message 18497: by Bridgit (last edited Mar 12, 2010 02:02PM) (new)

Bridgit | 475 comments Am in the middle of a few, but my primary book right now is The Art of Racing in the Rain and I am both loving and hating it at the same time. I really didn't need another book that makes me sob hysterically as I read it. For one, its seriously limiting where I can read it. Looks on the subway that I am getting are not comforting. And secondly, I am worried that this is heading right towards Marley and Me territory and I am going to get to the point where I am literally having to change shirts because i am crying and snotting so much that i am soaked.

anyhoo...to counter balance, I am also reading The Prehistory of the Far Side which is both a compendium of Far Side comics as well as a sort of 'commentary' version, with notes and explanations from Gary Larson of the originations, etc. of each comic. Really cool!

And then just so I remind myself that I am supposed to be smart, am still plowing through The Age of Innocence, though it is taking a while.

Hi, i have just joined this group...nice place! I liked Portrait of a Lady. hang in there. it is really multi-layered and has fascinating character studies. Lots of surprises and betrayals.

On the other hand tho, i have tried to get into The Golden Bowl (on audio) and am stalled out...maybe that needs to be read, not listened to.

message 18499: by Sasha (last edited Mar 12, 2010 02:41PM) (new)

Sasha Tess, I believe Golden Bowl is infamous for being one of the world's least readable books.

Coincidentally, there's a joke about that in this week's episode of House. Dude pretends he's reading Golden Bowl because he knows it's one book no one will ever pick up.

PS: Your cat looks exactly like one of mine.
