Really? I'd highly recommend you read it soon, then; it's just quirky and funny and all around a quick read. If I didn't have school, I probably would have finished this book in one sitting.

I should finish The Wasp Factory tonight. I'm still chipping away at Ulysses, and I just started Await Your Reply: A Novel on audio.

I just picked up The Gargoyle from the library today. It sounds really good.

I've been thinking about picking up some of her books for a while. As a Margaret Atwood newbie, any suggestions on what I should start with??

Kate, I think it depends on what kind of a story you're in the mood for. Her writing is marvelous and the stories span many settings. I would recommend any of the following:

Oryx & Crake is futuristic, bleak.
Cat's Eye is about childhood friendships, the harm/good they can cause and the resolutions/freeing of one's self from these.
Alias Grace is based on a true but very vague story in Canadian history. Atwood wove this tale from a very few newspaper clippings of an old murder.
The Blind Assassin - a generational family saga with a book within the book.
The Handmaid's Tale is another futuristic story. It can be disturbing but not in a bloody, violent way.

All of these are good but my favorites are The Blind Assassin and The Handmaid's Tale.

I would definitely read The Handmaid's Tale. That was a really good book (and the only one I've read of hers so far!).

The one book of all times that has stuck with me for years is The Handmaiden's Tale by Margaret Atwood. As dystopic novels go, she is the queen of making them feel real and ready to happen in our future if we do not change.

message 17267: by Paula (new)

Paula (paula717) | 52 comments Finished "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins and am nearly finished with "Catching Fire" (book 2). I really enjoyed the first book but am finding myself somewhat disappointed with the second. I feel the story is dragging somehwat. I have a feeling "the good part" I'm expecting to happen will only come around in book 3. I guess I'll have to be patient and wait...

Is this another Horror book? I am trying to expand your reading genre. Have you read The Circular Staircase by Mary Roberts Reinhart. It is a classic ghost story. Might be a little tame for you though, but it is scary.

message 17270: by [deleted user] (new)

no i have not read it yet and yes it is a horror book

message 17271: by Bhumi (new)

Bhumi | 524 comments Paula, if you don't enjoy Catching Fire as much as you did The Hunger Games, maybe you'll enjoy the third one more.

Right now, I'm reading Magic Study by Maria Snyder. Anybody else read it?

message 17272: by Maria (new)

Maria (minks05) | 481 comments i'm picking up steam with The Winter Rose. it's a good story, but just taking me awhile. i did skip ahead to the end, so i do know what happens, but there are so many characters in this book and it spans a decent amount of time, so it didn't completely ruin anything.

not sure what i'll pick up next, probably more library books. i'm trying to hold my giftcard for awhile, for when i REALLY need something to read.

Finished The Gates by Connolly. It was cute and funny and unexpected. The Book of Lost Things was much darker overall, while this one had a dark plot Connolly wrote a lot of humor into it!

About to start Horns by Joe Hill. (hits stores mid-Feb)

I read Poison Study and Magic Study and am 3 chapters into Fire Study. Loved PS, liked MS (but wanted more Valek!), and am just getting back into the abilities and conflicts.

This one is on my list to read this year.

Right now I am reading The Well of Ascension by Brandon Sanderson. It's the 2nd in the Mistborn trilogy. It's starting to invade my dreams.

message 17289: by Petra (new)

Petra I'm still reading Ulysses. It really is an amazing book for many reasons but it's a load of work to get through. I've still got 4 1/2 Episodes left.

In between (and one really does need an "in between" book with Ulysses), I'm reading Dreamers of the Day: A Novel by Mary Doria Russell. I'm enjoying the story and the flow of words. Her book, The Sparrow, was wonderful and I have high expectations from this one.

I agree! I started this at work today...during lunch, which was a mistake...it's pretty graphic. I think I'll head over to the spoiler free zone to see what everyone else is thinking.

I'm on Episode 12 now. The last few chapters have kind of dragged a bit for me (starting around 9, when they're in the library). I'm hoping that changes soon. My favorite Episode so far was Hades (Episode 6).

Cait, you're right behind me then. Hop on over to the Discussion thread. It's been quite lively there and a big help in understanding and encouragement, too.
My favorite episode was Episode 8 (The Lestrygonians) because it was a simple walk around town and lunch. I could relate to his thoughts as he wandered as I do that, too, when I walk around town.
Episode 9 reminded me of a Bookclub meeting, which is great if you're involved in the Club but otherwise, not so much.
See you in the discusstion thread, Cait.
