Holly (hollywolly) Just finished The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu and restarted Beauty The Invisible EmbraceJohn O'Donohue since it had been too long since I had read the first couple of chapters. Genji was a fascinating novel and I'm taking my time with Beauty to let it more or less seep in. Excellent reading.

I just love Montalbano novels. It's like a slice of life with a nice mystery on the side. My favourite character by far is Catarella. Love him to pieces.

I enjoyed them, especially The Sugar Queen. I put a request in for her next book at the library. It's not out until March, I think.

I loved Rebecca. It was one of my all time favorites. I also enjoyed Mrs. DeWinter as a follow up. It was not as good as Rebecca but it was interesting.

I had high hopes for this book, but it's been totally disappointing so far. I'm about 3/4 of the way through. I'd love to know what you think of it when you're done.

Hope you enjoy this fun romp as much as I did. I am now a real fan of Fforde. The Eyre Affair was one of the more creative mysteries I have read from a book about a book standpoint.

Tani | 137 comments Stephanie wrote: "Just started Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson and I am flying through it. I'm very impressed by it."

Speak was one of my top books of the year. I thought it was amazing.

I went to the library yesterday, and as usual, made a stunning display of my complete lack of self-control. I always go in thinking I should get just 3 or 4 books so that I still have time to read some of the books that I have on my shelves at home. I never seem to keep to that resolution. Yesterday being a prime example, I ended up 7 books.

They are:
Eon Dragoneye Reborn by Alison Goodman
Fire by Kristin Cashore
The Servants' Quarters by Lynn Freed
Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson
The Everafter by Amy Huntley
A Long Way Down by Nick Hornby
Lament The Faerie Queen's Deception by Maggie Stiefvater

Now I get the task of figuring out which to read first. Lament and Eon: Dragoneye Reborn are both high in the running so far, but I haven't looked at Fire yet either... :D

Patricia Just got back from the library with:

Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
The Gargoyle
That Old Cape Magic

I had to return Guernsey awhile back before I finished it so I will read the rest of it and be ready to start The Gargoyle on Friday.

JG (Introverted Reader) I've gotten incredibly behind on here lately!

I'm reading Stephen King's new book, Under the Dome, and it's really good so far!

message 16931: by Jessika (new)

Jessika Hoover (jessalittlebooknerd) Patricia--I LOVED Guernsey when I read it this past summer! I loved it so much that I asked for my very own copy of it for Christmas! :) Hope you enjoy it!

JG--I am so jealous that you're reading that. I've been itching to get over to B&N to pick up a copy of it with my Christmas $! haha

And what's the 50 page test?

I finished Marnie by Winston Graham a short time ago (5* - recommend it to everyone), and I'm going to start 84, Charing Cross Road in a while. Haven't seen the movie yet either.

message 16937: by Linda (new)

Linda | 887 comments Just finished Rough Country by John Sandford. While I liked it, I didn't love it. However, I do really like his Virgil Flowers character for laughs along the way in the various storylines. This rounds out my end-of-the-year total reads at 116. Whew! What a year for truly "great reads".

Now on to Under the Dome by Stephen King.

Lyn (Readinghearts) (lsmeadows) I am currently reading the second book in the Mary Russell series: A Monstrous Regiment of Women by Laurie R. King. I read the first and eighth book in this series and really enjoyed them both, so I am looking forward to reading this one.

I adore this book... and it's not a work of fiction, either, which makes it even better.

@Jessica: I'm really interested to hear what you think... I had a hard time with it.

I'm liking it so far! It is different than something I'd normally read, but I just kind of glaze over the technical/science stuff because I don't understand it. I mean, I read through it, but I don't put too much thought into it. I'm about halfway done now and I really like the character drama.

And the 50 pg. test...if I start reading a book and I'm not particularly interested in it after 50 pages, I quit reading it. I've finally gotten to the point where I figure there are so many books I want to read, why waste time reading one I don't?

What did you think about If On a Winter's Night a Traveler? I thought it started really strong and then I just lost the spark.

message 16950: by JSou (new)

JSou I loved, loved, loved the beginning, too. I had to read this kind of off and on due to being busy with the holidays and everything. It was kind of hard to get back into it with all the different stories going on, but once I had a chance to just sit down and read, I really enjoyed it.
