Hard to say...can you give some examples of books or movies that you found "too scary"? I personally *love* being scared and found Heart-Shaped Box interesting but not exceptionally frightening.

message 15152: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) I'm currently reading Daniel Silva's The English Assassin to de-stress from all my school stuff. It's pretty interesting, especially the bits about the Swiss banking system and about all the art that was stolen during WW2.

Paula | 1098 comments I agree with Mary, I'm not finding "The Heart-Shaped Box" extremely scary either. It's kind of goose bump scary if that makes any sense.

message 15155: by Julie (new)

Julie | 54 comments hmmm... i usually try to avoid scary movies, and ive never read horror for this reason. The onlt things i can think of is that I am Legand and shutter scared the crap outa me, but Disturbia didn't scare me at all. Gore doesn't bother me at all but, dystopia and paranormal things usually bother me. But sometimes it doesn't it really just depends on what it is, and other things bother me to, i'm still trying to figure out exactly what makes me scared,

message 15156: by Lianne (new)

Lianne (eclecticreading) Finished Daniel Silva's The English Assassin last night so I'm now on to Victoria Hislop's The Return. I'm excited for it because the story's set in Spain and has something to do with the 1930s.

Paula, I agree. It was more creepy and weird than truly scary. I'd say it was more in the paranormal realm than horror.

Juniper (jooniperd) Hello!

Last night I finished The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde and today I will be starting The Help by Kathryn Stockett.

I just returned from the library where they had my reservation for The Girl Who Played with Fire by Steig Larsson available for pick-up. That has bumped my reading of The Help for a couple of days. I am participating in Cynthia's seasonal reading challenge and The Girl... is a second book in a two book task. The Help is my first book for a three book task, so I figure I'll try and get some points where I can.

Writerlibrarian Dorie wrote: "I'll be starting Faceless Killers by Henning Mankell for a group read."

I don't know what the English translation is like but the French one was a bit out there. This is the first novel in Mankell's Wallander series it has all the faults of a first series novel and also some of the gems ideas too. I love this series because I can related to the cold and dark weather and the sleepy like town that is not what it seems like. Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks, Writerlibrarian. I've noticed a bit of awkwardness in the translation so far, but nothing too bad. This is one of my group reads.

Cait (caitertot) | 604 comments Lucky me, the last three books I've read have all been 4 stars:

Kafka on the Shore - Haruki Murakami
The first 2/3 of the book I would've rated 5 stars, but I had to knock off one by the end. Still a fantastic book though.

The Stepford Wives - Ira Levin
I had never read the book or seen either of the movies, so I only had a vague idea of the plot. I appreciated that because it kept me guessing as to what would happen until the very end.

Let the Northern Lights Erase Your Name A Novel - Vendela Vida
Beautiful and heartbreaking book by the wife of Dave Eggers. I love her style and am looking forward to reading her other two books.

Now I'm just starting Love Walked In by Marisa de los Santos. I hope it's as good as I've heard.

Yeah Sherry, I'd agree with paranormal. I still have about 100 pages to go. Maybe I can finish in the next couple of days.

message 15168: by [deleted user] (new)

Almost at the end of 2001: A Space Odyssey. I've only seen a small segment of the movie in an anthropology lecture and don't normally read sci-fi, but it's been a VERY interesting book. The last couple of pages had me a little lost but they were the most out-there, sci-fi-y parts of the book.
Next up, The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Always loved the story as a kid but I've never actually read the novel, so hoping it will be good, I don't normally like romance.

Fiona (Titch) Hunt (titch) Never rated The Lost Symbol last nite, cos I couldn't get into it. Maybe his last 1 I just can't understand. Might need to read it instead of listening to.

It's a shame that it's not more widely known, isn't it? I only became aware of it just recently due to the Fall Challenge (specifically the related author task). I wanted to read a book by Dave Eggers and I knew he was married to a writer, so I checked her out. I'm so glad I did.

Can I also say how awesome it is that you have Douglas Coupland on your shelf? I love him, but most people I know have no idea who he is. I think we share a lot of the same taste in books.

Stephanie (sbez05) | 556 comments I started Something Wicked This Way Comes by Ray Bradbury. I don't know if I'm just not in the mood for it or if it's because I tried to read it in the car on the way home from a camping trip, but I just can't really get into it yet. It's a book club book for a F2F book club, though, so I'm hoping it picks up because I really feel compelled to read those all the way through.

I'm not a fan of re-reading normally, but I think The Bell Jar would be interesting to revisit. I wonder if I would have the same opinion of it at 31 as I did when I was 13 or 14 and reading it for the first time without the life experience to back up my opinion of it. :)
